I was looking at the topic on hendersons relish, thinking about the bottle i have downstairs, licking my lips........... when i thought id add my own little contribution to the greatest sauce ever!

You see, up here in sheffield we have salt and relish, not salt and vinigar........... and we have cheese on toast with relish, not with worchester sauce or what ever that other one is called........... its so good!

Anyway, what are your views on relish?

Hendo's is unbeatable, especially on meat and potato pie. Anyone old enough will know the name Butlers who used to be on Broad Lane not far away from the mecca of the relish world. They made the most delicious m&p pies imaginable and they always served them with Hendersons. It makes my mouth water just thinking about it! It was a sad day when they closed down. It will be even more sad when the great factory itself moves to new premises. Don't have any details, but I believe it will be soon.

If you want to see little bottles of the dark nectar floating around your screen, check out my Hendersons screen saver at www.jimsdesk.fsnet.co.uk

Ignore the personal stuff, it's way out of date!

Enjoy!

And for those of you not old enough... you may have seen Butler's Balti House, which I believe is where Butler's used to be. The reason they kept the name was because the original Butler's had such a great reputation!

Anyway, I'm sure I'm going to get slated for this but... I think Henderson's Relish tastes just like Lea & Perrin's Worcestershire sauce. One thing I have noticed is that Lea & Perrin's contains some kind of fish extract and therefore isn't suitable for vegetarians, whereas Henderson's Relish is suitable for veggies. I think even Delia Smith has made a mistake with a veggie dish on TV and used Lea & Perrin's - when instead she could have used Henderson's Relish!

You are quite right about the Balti House - what sacrilege though!

And likewise your comment about L&P tasting the same - you can't mention that stuff in the same breath as Hendersons. What is the world coming to?

Hendersons relish is too strong, try spilling a drop on a metal table top and just see what it does to it, well that is what it does to your inside!

Except my insides aren't made out of metal so it won't oxidize(?) like your table top

I'd love to try some of this, but look at the ingredients!

Alcohol - a big no no, as I don't drink.
Saccharin - I try to consume as little artificial sweeteners as possible.

But I see they put 'Vegetarian friendly' on the bottle :x

Worramagonnado?

if you use it in a hot (80 deg c +)dish all the alcohol will evaporate.

What does Hendersons relish taste of anyway? Whats it for? I've never had it and know nothing about it really, other than it was made in Sheffield.

You can't describe the taste (no jokes please!) you just have to try it. You won't be disappointed! Put it on any pies, stews etc or add it to dishes that you cook to enhance the taste/flavour. Go on, you know you want to!

Hendersons Relish tastes nothing like Lea & Perrin’s and vegetarians don’t class fish as meat and do use L & P as my sister sometimes does (she has been a vegie for 15 years now) but she likes hendersons better and loves it on cheese pizza.

this isnt true at all. Once they tried to say that coca-cola rotted your insides just because when you left a 8oz steak in a bottle of coke over night it disintergrated. But 1, no-one drinks a full bottle of coke in a day and 2, what you eat and drink dosent stay in the same place for 8 hours.

I am reliably informed that the rumour that Hendersons are moving from Leavygreave is little more than an urban myth. As far as I know they are staying there for the foreseeable future.

So how far does Henderson's Relish travel? Mine comes just shy of 4000 miles from my mom in Sheffield to Wisconsin, USA.

Way too pretty to put away in a cupboard too with it's cool orange label. Mine lives on a little display shelf withing easy reach of the dining table...

Anyone's travel further... someone must be able to beat that...
