Hello music dudes or dudets,

Does anyone on this site do there own home recording studio? Im thinking about setting one up but am not sure of where to start!

Mac or PC, Audio interface or mixer etc etc.

Can anyone help? Id really like to see one in the flesh, so to speak, so i can get a good idea of the practical issues involved. I live in S1 so can get to almost anywhere fairly easily so if anyone has a setup i can see that would be great. Would really appreciate it. :help:

Many thanks

you can use either pc or mac, personal choice really
macs are supposed to be more stable cos all the hardwares fixed
with pcs its best to get a powerful one, set it up for audio creation and just use it for audio creation

start with a sequencer..........pro logic or cubase are decent pro ones, theres a few more but i cant remember the names
youll also need a midi setup.......ive never got to this stage lol
i believe they plug into the gameport on the soundcard? well they used to when i was looking at doing it

bearing in mind in the 80s, early 90s 90% of musicians used cubase on atari st's

Just get a decent pc and then get a good sound card installed in to the tower, then buy yourself a good condeser mic i bought an AKG 1000 for £100 but you can get them cheaper , you then need a good pre amp for your mic and of course some software cubase sx or whatever, i stared the jouney of setting my own home studio up 18 months ago and it was a mine field, when you ask people everyone has different suggestions so i decided to to buy the stuff i have mentioned and i have produced a wonderfull quality cd. i am a folk musician and the music i play into my mic is what i hear coming out of the speakers when recored if you understand. you need a good "sound card , condenser mic, pre amp for the mic" and cubase sx " not saying cubase sx is the best on the market but mine was a copy and saved myself £500 if you need anymore help send me a message to my pm and i will try and help more. I recorded a song on this system and sent it to a world famous folk singer from ireland and he said it was fantastic but would not be covering it. The man was Christy moore he said the lyrics and my voice where brilliant. mine is a very good recording system. the quality is top class for a home studio 15/20 yrs ago it would have cost a million pounds to put a studio together that produces recordings of this quality, now with the world of computers you can do it for a couple of hundred.

Is Cubase SX better than Cool Edit Pro?

Yup, running a behringer 12 channel mixer, into the AUX in on my PC, cubase SX reason 3.0, acid pro, abelton live, midi over ethernet, MIDI keyboard into roland MC303, Boss DR550 drum machine, pair of gemini xl500 decks... blah blah... Cheap and easy... But, oh got world of warcraft, so PC now downstairs, and studio in bits ;)

depends on the person using it, i'd personally go with cubase over it, its got alot more powerful functions.

also, studio set ups depend on what your using it for.

but the basics are the same, get a good pc, a good soundcard or external audio interface (this is probably the better option), then you want a good set of active monitors.

if your recording instruments, you will want a good vocal mic, and some general mics, plus you'd probably benefit from having a mixing desk.
