Has anyone been to Uniq on Carver Street? It used to be Ice Bar and Orchis, however it's completely changed now.
I went last night with a few friends and was not best impressed, much preferred it as it was (give or take the occassional fight).
What do you lot think?

Haha... is that that how they're spelling it? What a bunch of retards. Sounds about as unique as a cornflake. What was the music policy again? Funky house and soul/funk upstairs? Sounds like a 21st C Blairite lets-all-be-cosmopolitan urban socialite bar culture sanitised wet dream. Look at my 83 haircuts.

It's not 'uniq' is it?
Somewhere for the sheep to go, I guess.

I've just realised that 'sanitised wet dream' is quite probably an oxymoron.

And I bet 'soul/funk' adds up to an incomplete collection of Norman Jay's "Good Times" Cds.

That wouldnt be a bad thing - they're top compilations...

I'm not disputing that. The point I'm trying to make is that the collections dig a little deeper than the mainstream, and as such they should inspire people to do the same: seek, and ye shall find, and all that bo****ks - rather than playing them out and making them sound tired. Soul music, especially the Northern stuff, was the first to recognize "The Underground (TM)", because when you have a large room of people madly into the sound, having it large, and generally rioting to the beat, the concept of charts etc. becomes irrelevant. All I meant was: such compilations should inspire DJs to have a look for themselves, and not JUST play them (I mean, they should play them a bit, if they've got wicked tracks on). It's a balance, innit, between entertaining and educating.
The rash of "soul nights" which exploded on West Street about 2 years ago (thankfully subsiding now) basically consisted of pub jukebox/wedding tracks. I mean, everyone loves a bit of Luther (RIP) or Gwen McCrae or The Emotions or whatever, but Soul music is and should be about more than that. Not some Time Life/Readers Digest Sunday afternoon regurgitation.

What the hell am I talking about?

Dropped in over the weekend- downstairs is apparently refurbished :hihi: - a lick of paint doesnt really qualify. The place is still a dive tho I overheard the manageress woman saying she hope to attract a better class of clientele- not likely, not only is more like a scruffy student union joint, but the door staff were the rudest apes I have ever encountered, and this was when the place was still empty so they hadnt had chance to get abused by drunken revellers yet. I was approached by two who barked in my ears "get yer coat off, get upstairs or get out. I got out- and wont be going back:nono:
Better people expect better service.

They have to be licensed, but no legal requirement to be nice to be people. Shame, as some can be very chatty and helpful while others are the lowest species known to man (not going to post the name of the club though I refer to)

I went there on sat and definatly wont be going there again.I actually used to like the place, more for the music than some of the clientele i have to add!Got in there at about 11.30pm and left at 12.15,couldnt stand it any longer. Now where do i go for some decent RnB? Ended up at the 30somethings club on Carlise Street, really good music enjoyed the night but the place could do with being a little busier, but i think it has great potential if you like that scene.Anyway wont be visiting the ice bar/orchis from now on.

You want me to act like a queen?
The forum is for "selfs" opinions, you fool. Judging by your other thread you have a personal interest in this place and therefore your comments dont interest me as they are likely to be slightly biased.:loopy:
A new establishment will be judged on one and the first visit by most, and word then gets round. Thats why its important to get things right FROM THE START- EVERYTIME. This place got it wrong- and im not the only one with that view- See poll at top of thred. Jerk

Deon.

I've read your posts and had nothing to do with the ongoing argument on this thread. HOWEVER, it is obvious that you do hace some interest in the venue. I'd probably guess your one of shiela's mates.

QUOTE:

the new manageress was extremly pleasant i recognised her from when she worked at halcyon and she has great ideas lined up for the venue give it a break and give them a chance.

If you only recognised her how do you know what great ideas she has. Are you a mind reader! I think not.

The place is going down the toilet and will be back as before once she goes. Oh and that won't be to long either!

Well, I might give it a go, despite my earlier prejudice-based rantings. Perhaps I could go to the Northern Soul/ Latin nights that you have brought to our attention, deon. I think it's really nice of you to act as volunteer promoter while having nothing to do with the place.

That's really, really nice.

To some people it may have been a dive, but some of actually liked the place.
no clubs in sheffield play the music i enjoy now at all, and yes i have been in and its just like practically everywhere up and down west street.I guess if you are over a certain age and not a student the general opinion is you should be at home knitting or off to bingo then? And incase anybody was wondering....no i wont be going back in.

:) Went out on hen night, one of the places we went in was uniq. not knowing what it was like before apart from reading your comments today making me wonder if we were at the same bar. The bouncers were very bubbly and coax us in as we were walking straight past. We had a great time in thier dancing to 70 & 80s with no problem as everyone was just out for a good time, then went on to Kingdon.:)

I know the pub you mean, spend nearly every week in blues in pitsmoor have done for years, Sometimes its nice to have a change and go into town first though.Went to town friday. Every pub in town now is practically the same, looks like a trip out of town, petrol in car and overnight room then.

It was always fight central, more fights in there than anywhere else in town
