View Full Version : Corporation rock club
is it any good ? .......just been on there site lookin at upcoming concerts ......suprised to see that blu cantrell is playing there as shes not rock ........anyway will it be like a normal concert or will it be like a club night ie having to get over dressed up:confused:
SatanInHeels 21-03-2004, 09:25 blu cantrell... please tell me you aren't going to that!! not rite sure why they are having her there because that is just kinda damaging the reputation of the place but...
gigs at the corporation are usually just pretty much wear what you want, you dont often see people over dressed on club nights!
cheap booze also on club nights..!!!
fnkysknky 21-03-2004, 09:27 How can you damage the reputation of a festering sh*t hole?

the festering sh*t hole must be doing something rite to get so many people in there 5 times a week!!
and the reputation that is being damaged is that of the corporation being a dedicated alternative music club, blu cantrell is hardly that alternative! even if it is a sh*t hole then it dont mean they dont play good music
fnkysknky 21-03-2004, 11:08 I'm not saying anything against the music policy - it's not my cup of tea (although every so often they have a decent night like Insomniacz etc.) but I realise a lot of people enjoy it. What gets me is that the place is absolutely disgusting, it's a health hazard. Don't get me wrong I like dark, scruffy clubs (Arches is quality) but I don't like wading through a few inches of **** to get to the toilet etc. - hence it's reputation as a festering sh*t hole.
SatanInHeels 21-03-2004, 13:47 i didnt say a thing about the state of the club (which at gigs is actually a hell of a lot better as there is a hell of a lot less alcohol being consumed) so by all means make comments about the state of it because everyone that has been there on a club night will know how discusting it can get and im sure there aint nobody who can argue with that.. but if you are gonna, dont relate the comments to my post in the form of a question sugesting that what i have said is wrong plz.

Hmmm. . . . you bump into someone in the corporation by accident, spill a bit of their pint, they're appologising before you are. . .
You bump into someone in Kindom, you are lightley to be invited outside for exchanges of punches. . . and that without the spilling of the ale. . .
Don't be such a snob. . . The Corp rules. . . (it ruled more when it used to be at the side of Argos!!)

thanks for saying that btw.. i was gonna but i didnt wanna go against what i was saying because fnkysknky's post had no relevance to that.. but it is well true. the atmosphere in the corp is a hell of a lot better than in and club like kindom, so much more friendly. even some of my mates go that dont like the music or the state of it, just go because it is such a difference to getting dirty looks n gettin in the middle of fights!
Have to agree give me the corp over kindom anytime.
I have been several times and have never seen any trouble and most people appear to be out to have a good time while consuming a few beers :)
In my experience (being a little older) saturday night is the best, awesome rock music
I was their last night and had a great time.

I don't think fnkysknky problem was with the people who go in the corp,i think its more to do with the place itself. The Corp crowd are a good bunch,i've been in there quite a few time and never seen any trouble and you do get a really good mix of poeple in there, its just that the place itself isnt to nice. The toilets in there are far beyond bad on a fri/sat night when i've been in,most of the time you have to take a good gulp of air before you go in.The place has got a reputation of being a bit of a s**thole, but that shouldn't reflect on the people who go in there.
where abouts is it then..... i no theres no box office to purchase tickets but theres various outlets across the city:confused:

Not entirely true, not everyone is like that in corp (or any club), i've been going for 7 years and i have seen fights, people getting thrown out and people trying/failing to sneak in with things they shouldn't have, however the general crowd at corp are just there for the music (and a few drinks!), it is more relaxed than a lot of other places and i've been to nearly every club, all the major ones anyway.
On the music side of things I only really stick to the classic rock room, and over the past few months it's not been the same since before the new year. There's alot more late 90's-current music then before in that room, now I know times move on but I do like my 80's early 90's rock.
I will agree on that the place was better in the old Bank street building with the otherside bar next to it.

It's on milton street.
Go to the forum bar and turn left after it (walk all the way down the hill), you will see the Devonshire cat pub, carry on down the hill and you will see the sign on the side of the building

go to jacks records or noise annoys to get tickets for gigs...
jacks records - if you walk up division street in the direction of devvy green then there is a turning to your left leading to a few small shops one of them being jacks records
Hmm, i don't think fnky would defend kingdom either somehow. I like a lot of different clubs, including corp. I really cannot stand kingdom, got dragged there again last week by mates and it just confirmed to me how bad the place is.
Classic Rock 22-03-2004, 09:49 Fabulous place run by fabulous people. Highly recommended.
jackthedog 22-03-2004, 10:17 Is anyone familiar with Teflon?
They use it to coat non-stick pans. They use it in adventure clothing garments, as water simply beads and rolls off the surface. It is also used in certain types of grease, which is useful for coating bearings with. It creates a very smooth, water-repellant, slippery surface.
So which member of the Corporation management decided that it would be a good idea to coat the stairs in the stuff?!
fnkysknky 22-03-2004, 12:22 Right at what point did I say anything about Kingdom? I hate the place just as much as you (in fact no probably a lot more than you). As for Corp. - Satan In Heels said Blu Cantrell would damage it's reputation - I replied that it had a reputation as a festering sh*t hole which it is, it's disgusting. At no point did I have a go at the music policy or the clientele - I've been (both where it is now and the old site + many times when it was the Unit) and I've had some good nights there but there's no denying the place needs cleaning in a big way and someone needs to call a plumber or 2.

black_soul 23-03-2004, 11:05 Well Duffman i have to say i dont think corperation is the greatest place........went there Monday night it was alrite music is decent......and 50% of the people seem alrite but you have alot of ******s in there........alot of wannabies........i dont know maybe it's coz i am from london....but it seems to be missing something.......
black_soul 23-03-2004, 11:13 Hmmm I dont know Duffman i didnt think corperation was the greatest......musics alrite 50% of the people seem decent but the rest seem to aload of middle class rebels/******s.......maybe its coz i am from london and i am used to a differnet vibe but its missing something..........

I love the place, but agree its dangerous. I've slipped down the stairs before and hurt myself, and a friend of mine, fell down the fire exit concreate stairs. He was knocked out and not found for ages as it was a stair case not used much. He just went doen them by accident as he was drunk and not familiar with the lay out. He was in hospital for a while with a smashed up face and head injury. He's had corrective surgery since to sort his face out.
jackthedog 23-03-2004, 12:05 Glad i'm not the only one who's thought its too dangerous.
The combination of beer and low light doesnt help, admittedly, but they are so slippery anyway, even sober. Really needs sorting I reckon :(
Sory to hear about your mate foxxx :( hope he's okay

Hahahahhaaaaaaaa :P
Judging by the little pieces of clothing that people were wearing last night, I'd say that people at clubnights are distinctly *under* dressed...
Sorry, made me laugh
I'd never been to a rock club until I came to Sheff and I think corp is great. Cheap drink, good music and good atmosphere. It could certainly do with a clean up though, but it can't be TOO clean or it'd lose its edge over mingdom etc.
I've tried hard to like Kingdom, but its awful.

Bummer! Sometimes I wish I was a student again :)

I gave it about 30 seconds serious thought and then remembered that I was out every night this weekend.. which for me is a serious weeks worth of entertainment...
I have to admit that I'm interested to see what it's like sometime though... perhaps I'll have to drag Beachboy out with me on a non-school night and check it out...
Lord knows we enjoy a good night out

thenewborn 31-03-2004, 12:51 going to corp this monday nite with brain thrust,
anyone else making an apearnce?
princess_rockchick 31-03-2004, 13:24 The coporation is an ok place to go, However i do not tend to venture there too often.....
So tell me people why is there only one rock club and only one rock pub in Sheffield?
Albert Tross 31-03-2004, 14:09 I used to be down at Bank Street every week.Have only been to Unit a few times but it is a hole.
Also seem to be a less freindly atmosphere than before.
Maybe its closer proximity to other watering holes means that passing ********s pop in.
That didnt seem to happen at the other place as it was out of the way adn the only people down there had a genuine intrest in the music.
Not ****** up townies coming to take the ****.
Or maybe its just me and I'm a mardy old git always thinking things were better.

There isnt...there are 4 (that I can think of) rock pubs. Nelson, Classic Rock Bar, Sportsman and Casbah. Maybe more, thats just the ones that spring immediatley to mind.

Do not know the nelson, Classic Rock bar. Are these in the city centre?
The casbah is not a place i goto much anymore since they did it up, i remember when it was wapentake and it was much better then it is now. I wouldn't really call cashbar a metal pub really, as i have heard it only plays metal on a friday night, which is crap, it should play metal on friday and saturday because thats when most people probably go.
Albert Tross 31-03-2004, 17:52 Ah,the Wap now that was a watering hole.
I once found what looked like a rocket launcher stuck out of of one of the toilet pans.Though i had been drinkin at the time.
princess_rockchick 31-03-2004, 17:58 I remember the wap well. Ok so it was a bit ****ty, but maybe it was supposed to be that way inside. Maybe it made the place better. Then it changed its name. It was good for a while, but then just went crap.
So what happened to all the nice places that played good music?
The NElson is at the top of the moor, opposite McDonalds. Was originally called The NElson, then The Hind, then Seamus O'Donnels, then Bar Miles, then Buskers Bar, and now its The Nelson again. Rock music every night. Classic Rock Bar is at the bottom of Eccy Road, near Safeway. Used to be the Jolly Buffer.
princess_rockchick 31-03-2004, 20:33 I remember the pub as been samus o donnell's. Didn't know it had changed to a rock pub, maybe i will check it out at some point. Sounds like it maybe a better place than it used to be.
How long has it been a metal pub? What metal does it play on a Saturday night?

evildrneil 01-04-2004, 10:21 The D+R is fab - but was of course better when it was the tut (cue nostalgia mode!) and had a super-sized Jenga game, twister painted on the floor in front of the bar and zebra stripe baise on the pool table!!!
Grrr I wanna go there again now!!!

evildrneil 01-04-2004, 10:37 Ere are you calling me an old git :P Now I shall definatley steal you pitchfork
Yes I remember those days! Guess I am old!!!!
The mural is still there. Some of my friends are in that mural!
You should come down tonight because it's a celebration of the landlord (John) owning it for 5 years.
He kept it alternative when Whitbread left (taking the tut n shive name with them)
Classic Rock 01-04-2004, 11:36 In the Notices and Events section of the Forum I have placed a list of the live rock bands we have playing in April. So far we have 55 bands booked to play as well as a rock disco every night.
Classic Rock Bar
144 Ecclesall Road, next to the Shell petrol station.
5 minute walk from the Corporation (just to keep this post back on line with the thread!)

LOL!!! In line with the thread....the thread is about corp! We've all gone off on a tangent about rock pubs now! Nice bit of advertising there though CR in your attempt at bringing the thread back!
The classic Rock bar is also very good, and as CR says, it is not far from corp so it's a good place to drink in before going down for a headbang!

It's just a normal pub night, open to the public and all that, so get there whenever. Think I'll be down about 8.30-9. John has been telling his friends to make sure they all come down tonight in particular to celebrate with him so there should be some old faces.
Hope you can come. I'll look out for the red jacket! No idea what I'll be wearing!
Can anyone tell me if corp is open tonight?? What night is it if it is? Not been on a school night since change of venue so I don't actually know if it's open or not! Got tomorrow off so would be fun to go tonight!

I ran the Yorkshiremans with Sass for the six months before it changed name. We got it rocking again as it was in the old days before the refurb.
Then we took on the Classic Rock Bar.
Both pubs are near the Corporation (back on line again!) and are/were pre drinking holes.
SatanInHeels 01-04-2004, 13:33 no foxxx, i dont think corp is open tonight! monday, wednesday, friday and saturday it is open!
not been in dove for a couple of weeks now (mainly due to lack of funds because of being in either corp or dove every day nearly for too long!) may go down for a bit tonight tho, if i feel up to it by then and can find someone to go with!! X

Hope you do come out later.

Most nights. Some nights there's a DJ that plays punk, heavy metal, rock etc. Other nights it's the duke box and there is a really good mix on there of all sorts of alternative genres and a few fun CDs like wham and abba.
Don't know when you've been in, but I don't think it's gone down hill personally. There's a really friendly atmosphere in there and the music is good. Plus it still sells cheap corp tickets so lots of people go there on a saturday before going to corp.
princess_rockchick 01-04-2004, 16:35 I have not been in the dove and rainbow on a saturday for a while now, maybe i just meet the wrong people. I do not know who goes out to corp anymore, maybe i will actually get to meet up with them at some point or other. Who knowes it could happen.
So which nights do you go in?

Five years?...goodness, it only seems like the other day that John took that place over...best landlord that place ever had and possibly the best and most straight up guy I ever worked for.
Have a grand night of it and here's to the next five years!
Went to the Nelson friday night well impressed great music and friendly atmosphere
Popped in there on Saturday, good mixed crowd and shall we say an eclectic DJ? Just a shame that the place is so small...gets a little crowded after a while.
