There's some general information here (http://www.bbc.co.uk/health/ask_the_doctor/milkintolerance.shtml).

Do you know for sure that the infant is lactose intolerant? I'm presuming he's already seen the GP.

I've had a quick search and you're right, most of the information on lactose intolerance is specifically aimed at adults. There are also some sites out there the primary aim of which seems to be to flog a book. Best to seek out official information from the GP, dietician or health visitor as appropriate :) .

If you want more information from people on the forum too, it might be a good idea to PM a mod and ask him or her to move it to the 'General Chat' section, as more peope might see it there. You could also get in touch with a mod by clicking on the little red triangle in the left hand panal of your original post.

[EDIT: Oops. You won't see a little red triangle in your post. Try mine instead.]

A doctor told me I suffer from this and the dietician I saw at the Hallamshire said there was a test called a hydrogen test, something like a breath test, that you can have done. She has written to my gastroenterologist recommending this. I will post when and if I have it done. Basically I avoid dairy products or I get stomach pains and diarrhoea. This involves using soya milk etc. If I lapse, I pay for it later and usually spend the night on the toilet!

But without having any test I know to avoid dairy.

Both my two kids were lactose intollerant but thankfully grew out of it as they got older. They both had formula soya 'milk' on prescription and I found there were plenty of dairy alternatives for them to eat. I weaned them both on home made food anyway and my son was weaned as a vegan as he also had an intollerance to eggs. The symptoms they both had were: excema, dioreah (sp?) projectile vomiting, constant cough/runny nose, and rashes. These soon cleared up once diagnosed and their diet changed. Most health visitors and doctors should be able to advise you.
