Drowned in Sound presents:

MAZES (Fat Cat) - http://mazesmazesmazes.com/

Mazes formed in early 2009 in Manchester and began their life touring with Pens and Wavves before going on to play shows and tour with bands such as Deerhunter, Thee Oh Sees, Sic Alps, Box Elders, Dum Dum Girls and Crocodiles. Their belief in recording live and very quickly to tape has meant that they already have a significant back catalogue, releasing their first two singles (the second a split with Spectrals) on Brighton’s Sex is Disgusting and a third on Suffering Jukebox to critical acclaim from blogs and the wider press. Mazes state that they ‘don’t work on anything too much due to circumstance and a quest for spontaneity.’ This approach is most exemplified by the mix tape that Mazes produced for Italian Beach Babes, which, in the grand tradition of Sebadohs 'The Freed Weed' and the series of ****ed Up mix tapes, contained 30 tracks of sketched out ideas, acoustic versions, alternative takes and samples. Mazes are a band that couldn’t be accused of overthinking anything, instead relying on a sharp instinct for a pop hook that had a critic comparing them earnestly to ‘the holy heights of The Clean, The Vaselines and Television Personalities’, whilst Marc Riley, on their recent BBC 6 music session called them a ‘ sort of really garagey Kinks.’

+ MILK MAID (Fat Cat) - http://fat-cat.co.uk/fatcat/artist/Milk+Maid

Milk Maid emerged from the Manchester music scene, and consists of Adam Carless, Ian Hodson, and songwriter Martin Cohen – ex-bassist of Nine Black Alps. A DIY aesthetic has been a key component in the band’s ethos, with Cohen writing and recording everything in his flat. Riding their own wave in the re-emergence of the Manchester music scene, Milk Maid has with their effortless creativity and swirling melodies created a significant buzz - appearing with such bands as Wild Nothing, label-mates Mazes, Titus Andronicus, Crocodiles and Male Bonding. Sessions at the BBC with Marc Riley and at Maida Vale with Huw Stephens has solidified Milk Maid’s status as one of the bands to look out for in 2011.

+ BROWN BROGUES

"Northern Soul, Wigan Pier, pies, rugby league and yadda yadda yadda. That's what everyone says about Wigan when they've not actually ever been near the place. The truth of the matter is, what defines this curious little town is a fondness for outsider pop (The VCs being one recent example) and putting on fancy dress on Boxing Day. However, they've got a new band called Brown Brogues who make the sludgiest, most confounding No-Fi rock... possibly ever. They've got a single out with Manchester's Suffering Jukebox label and the video for it is, well, really something. Watch and laugh while your ears peel off at the intense fuzzzzz. Imagine The Fall doing Slade covers" - Electric Roulette.
