View Full Version : Any computer genius around before Monday?
I'm really skint so can't afford to pay someone to sort my laptop out.
I have had an offer for help after Monday next week but really need it asap.
Basically I've set things up to access the network and internet as far as I can and it won't go further. It says 'wireless network connected' and 'internet connection connected' but then when I try to access the server tells me that I don't have permission even though I've provided a network key and encryption code that matches with that of our server and when I try to access the internet it just comes up with 'page cannot be displayed' even though it does say that it's connected.
There are also none of the little bars in the task bar (if you know what I mean). The little bars (like a bar chart) that turn green when the network's connected aren't there at all.
I'm working on Windows XP Home Edition if anyone can help :help:
Thanks
Go down to the bottom left of the screen and click on the start button. Then click on run, a box will open. Type cmd in the box and hit enter. In the new window type ipconfig and hit enter. What does it say?
oldvic28 27-01-2006, 12:03 A couple of other things to check:
Make sure your browser has no proxy server settings set up.
If you're running a firewall make sure you're allowing your browser through it to access the Internet.
Vic.
alchresearch 27-01-2006, 12:07 Try it with no WEP encryption on first.
GothicCharm 27-01-2006, 16:11 How??
That was how to: proxy whatsitcalled and WEP encryption. (dad told me we have to have encryption codes)
GothicCharm 27-01-2006, 16:14 oh yeah, did the cmd thing and it all replied ok so it definitely works, just won't let me on = confused lottie
Hi,
Can you access the router setup menu from the laptop? To do this you'd open internet explorer and go to an address that would look like http://192.168.1.1 or similar. It should bring up a box that asks for a username and password. The exact address would be in the router's instruction manual. If you can't find it what is the make and model of the router?
Hi,
I'm not sure, does it have to be from my laptop? I can't access it and I don't know what make or model the router is! my dad normally does all this!
I've come to the conclusion everything is connected, it all says it's connected it's performing the 'cmd' thingy fine, but it won't actually access the entire network or the internet.
it says 'cannot find server or DNS Error' at the bottom of the page...
Is it just the http://192.168.1.1 you tried? That may not be the correct address for your particular router. Do the cmd thing again and use the number that it lists for default gateway if it's not the same as above.
It asks me for a user name and password
it then offered me my hotmail email address as username so i put in my password and it says '401 unauthorised, authoriszation required.'
The username and password would be the ones required to view and alter the settings on the router. Your dad should know what they are. If you can get them from him go into the router menus and see if you can find the DNS addresses. There are usually three listed, they are bunches of numbers similar to the ones you've already looked at.
Bellacboy 27-01-2006, 18:28 Try using admin as your user name and password. I had a similar problem not long ago and came on here to ask advice and was told to type admin for both. It worked for me. I don't know how to add a link to my thread but it was titled 'What is a WEP password?' If you can find it, it might help.
