Arthur was considering taking the 'case' to the court ... but apparently he didn't have a leg to stand on ...

Shame the suitcase had not just fallen from the back of a 747 at 10,000 feet and was full of housebricks.

Whilst there doesn't seem to be much sympathy here on the forum, I still think the ignorant <removed>that barged past him and sent him flying ought to be arrested. I hate people like that when I travel, many of whom seem to commute to Sheffield from Chesterfield and Derby on Virgin Trains!

The former miners' leader Arthur Scargill is recovering in hospital with a broken arm after colliding with a rail traveller's trolley suitcase at Sheffield station.

The 66-year-old veteran of the National Union of Mineworkers was boarding a train for Cardiff on the way to addressing meetings and rallies marking the 20th anniversary of the 1984-85 pit strike.

Liz Screen, the Welsh general secretary of the Socialist Labour party, which Mr Scargill leads, said: "He was putting a foot on to the train when he was knocked off balance by the suitcase."

Mr Scargill had surgery at Northern general hospital.

Ms Screen said that the accident was "disastrous" for a barnstorming tour of south Wales. Mr Scargill had been due to address a meeting in Narberth, Pembrokeshire, followed by Swansea and a rally tonight at Maesteg, one of the flashpoints of the dispute.

A spokeswoman for Midland Mainline said the accident was being investigated. She said first aid had been given at the scene and staff had called an ambulance.

Mr Scargill is a familiar sight in South Yorkshire, although he has long disappeared from the national headlines. He still lives near his native Barnsley but the trappings of his 20-year empire have all but vanished, with the NUM down to fewer than 5,000 members and a demolition order on its empty former HQ in Sheffield.

I doubt you would be able to get hold of him, himself, i bet he gets alot of people trying to get hold of him and a, he doesnt have the time or b, he cant be bothered.

id try getting people on SF who were around at the time of the miners strike and speak to them instead.

Get the view from both sides and also what they though of old Arthur.

shouldnt be hard. phone the northern general ask them what ward he is on and go and visit him at visiting time

Well i already spoke to miners and NUM members but I would like to speak to him

I am still trying through other people that are supposed to be close to him.

Poor old Arthur ; doesn 't seem to have much luck with cases and bags. Handbagged by the ' Old Bag ' Blue-Rinsed Lady Thatch in the '80 's ; surrounded on all sides by various nut-cases---and finally knocked down by one ! What next ? A good biff on the snout from The Cameroon 's briefcase ? Could be !

I had a chat with 'King Arthur' a couple of months ago whilst shopping in Barnsley. Didn't mention the war though, sorry, strike!! He was very polite and mentioned his speaking engagements which i hoped to attend. Hope he's ok!
