aligel 26-01-2006, 03:51 PM does anyone know if the devonshire cat has joined the 24hr drinking culture and opens late on a saturday night?
looking for a nice city centre ish pub that stays open till midnight/1am sort of time... ta!
Cyclone 26-01-2006, 04:04 PM no it hasn't.
I had a long and drunken conversation (on my side) with the owner/manager.
I suspect he'll change his mind when all the predictions of doom and gloom have been proven wrong (if they haven't already). He was worried about trouble and seemed to think that asking his staff to work an hour later was a problem... Like he wouldn't be making back the money he pays them or some of them couldn't start an hour later.
We were hoping they would stay open for an extra half hour or so on a Sunday after our Sunday meets. But we were told by one of the bar staff that if they stayed open later the manager would have to pay for taxis for the staff, and he didn't want to.
Cyclone 26-01-2006, 04:12 PM seemed like another spurious excuse when he said that to me as well.
Are all the other bars that stay open a little later paying for taxi's? I doubt it somehow.
aligel 26-01-2006, 05:03 PM Cheers, guys.
shame...they could do well there. and what's the deal with staff taxis?? a) shouldn't they pay for them anyway - kind of the decent thing to do, and b) so the bar staff need taxis if they leave at 1am, but at 12 midnight it's fine to walk home...?! makes no sense to me...
Cyclone 26-01-2006, 06:43 PM like I said, spurious.
The owner seemed like a really nice guy and he was happy to talk to me and explain, so i'm not knocking him for that.
I'm just disappointed that my favourite pub won't be staying open later, I wouldn't have to rush then to work through the beer menu.
He did seemed concerned that the police were concerned. 'They' thought that there would be lots of trouble. So now that the doom sayers have pretty much been proved to be completely wrong across the whole country and over the period of the year where people drink the most, I hope that the owner may reconsider... Maybe if we started a forum petition he'd realise that normal people want to take advantage of later opening hours and not just beer swilling friday night bare knuckle fighters.

I think the owner of the Devonshire Cat is an ar*e! The staff and the manager are lovely, but the perv that lords it at the end of the bar, staring at women's breasts puts me right off!
The only time he does any work is at 11.01pm when he tries to take away a drink you only just purchased... For this reason no one will go with me any more (although I love the cherry beer)
I am not at all suprised that he doesn't pay for taxis for the staff that work so hard for him. Has anybody noticed that some of them now work at the Frog and Parrot? (This is open late, I think until 1am, at the weekend)
Sorry... deep breath... count to ten...! :) Better now!
