It's beyond me.. personally I couldnt care less about a M.P's sexuallity as long as he/she is up to the job. Well I suppose they have to sell the papers some how dont they. (Prehaps we could have a poll)

I agree all the way HP. I think it's time the gutter press were stopped from hounding our MP's, and anyone else famous like Sven Goran Thingy who are constantly hounded by these so called journalists.
very funny... it's far to early for humour kirky..

The deed (so far as we know) was done between consenting adults in private, so no laws were broken. The only people who gained anything from this were the newpapers.
Apparently, when he was first elected in 1983 he was put forward as the "straight candidate" in direct opposition to another candidate who was openly gay. Presumably at that time, this was enough to get him elected. If this is the case, then this isn't about sexuallity, it is just another two-faced politician getting their come-uppence.
Don_Kiddick 26-01-2006, 07:54 It was all a big misunderstanding - this politician thought
''The Gary Glitter'' was a theme pub when his mate told him he was gonna take him up there.
Panic over
fruit&nut 26-01-2006, 07:57 what difference does anyones sexuality make?who really cares what pms do in their private lives as long as they can do the job,
the media should leave people alone,:)

That's a fair point Ken, and if it's correct then he has got all that is coming to him.
With the tabloid press we have in this country I couldn't possibly blame anyone in the public eye (especially politics) for staying well & truly in the closet...
And then of course, as soon as they're outed, people just sit there making smart comments. I wouldn't want a bunch of second-rate hacks trawling through my private life. Fair enough that Lib-Dem Oaten guy was stupid having an affair with a rent boy, but this latest guy, what has he done apart from (IMO understandably) keep quiet about it in the 1970/80's when it probably would've finished his career if he was ANYTHING other than completely open? And once he decided to stay in the closet it would have been difficult to come out, coz, again, the tabloid numpties would've pounced.
And if he WAS completely open the aforementioned tabloid hacks would have ridiculed him anyway. Lose/lose situation, made worse by Sun readers thinking (mistakenly) they're clever & bitching about it...
When he first stood as an MP in 1983 he was in direct opposition to Peter Tatchell (Labour Candidate) who is now well known as a gay rights campaigner. The fact that the labour candidate was gay was used in the liberal campaign. In one example, a leaflet refered to Hughes as the "Straight Choice". Hughes admitted this and has since said it was an "unacceptable form of language". I couldn't care less about the sexuallity of politicians but it is nothing short of a con to actively use that fact that someone is gay to score points against them when you know you are also gay.
It's possible that the party progaganda machine didn't know he was bi-sexual when he stood originally in the early 80's, & prepared the "straight choice" gubbins for him. If that was the case then he wouldn't have exactly stood up after how ever long in the closet & said "Actually I'm bi", he would've just agreed. I don't think he would have made the choice to use that exact line, that would've taken some considerable stupidity.
Therefore, if he'd THEN come out to his party, he probably would've got sacked, & then yada yada tabloid hacks yada yada "oh drama" yada yada lose his job...
Like I said, lose lose situation, except for the second-rate tabloid hacks, who probably would've got hold of the "straight choice" line that the party were preparing for his campaign, & pounced even more...
