You need to have a good read of thos site mate if you want traffic to your site.

First thing you need an actual domain name rather than a free web account.
There are a lot of factors when trying to get traffic from google coming to your site but you need to tailer your websites to the hints and tips suggested in seochat.com

anyone have any tips on how to avoid your site appearing on google/search engines?

i've put:

<meta name="robots" content="noindex,nofollow">
at the top of each .html page, but i would imagine that is largely ignored.. i know it's possible to completely hide a site, as i frequent a couple of forums who are completely off the radar.. they don't seem to want to divulge any info. though (and, yes, i've checked the html source of their pages; can't see anything out of the ordinary)..

any ideas?

ta.

Have a look at The Robot Exclusion Standard (http://www.robotstxt.org/wc/exclusion.html#robotstxt) and use a robots.txt file.

For more about how Google crawls websites, see Google Information for Webmasters (http://www.google.com/intl/en/webmasters/bot.html)

As far as I understand it Pete, if you put a link for your site as your Forum signature, Google will pick it up when it crawls the web and add it.

They (Google) already stole photo's I linked on the Forum, some from photobucket and some from my Geocities page. Grrrrrrrr!

i don't know how to make a sight invisible but from what i have gathered, most SEs ignore the keywords in the meta tag because of spamming.....includes google

yeah but that file has to be in the root, so it only really applies if you have your own dedicated server i presume.. i just rent a domain & some webspace off apis networks (http://www.apisnetworks.com), so my webspace is dynamically assigned and i can't stick stuff in their root folder..

even so, i'm sure the robots.txt file is more often than not ignored, the same way meta tags are, as rocketpig quite rightly pointed out..

There was a thread on this very subject only a week or so ago.

Seem to remember there was a lot of info there about how to add your site to search engines.

EDIT: Found it ~ http://www.sheffieldforum.co.uk/showthread.php?t=83633
