For ex-pats and those people who don't live in Sheffield anymore, what do you miss most about it, if anything?

For those of you that still live there, what do you think you'd miss most about it if you left?

For me, it's the people, pubs and curry.:D

As an ex-pat living in Scarborough, I don't miss the city (or any city for that matter) but the greatest thing about Sheffield is the people, Sheffield people are thr friendliest in the country.

I miss fish n' chip shops and decent pubs. I miss a good cuppa tea with digestive biscuits. I have a stash of Branston pickle so I'm okay for now. I miss family and friends of course. They don't make friends like that over here.

Spot on. Well at least with relish and a proper fishcake. For me, a pie wasn't complete without a generous splash of Hendersons. I also miss my favourite supper, a fish 'n' a cake. What about the mushy peas? The chip shops where I now live don't sell 'em. The tinned stuff is not quite the same. But most of all, I miss a decent pint.

Fishcakes, friendly people (took me years and almost turning into an alky to get to know people down here) and football. Hopping onto a bus, knowing if you miss one there'll be another one fairly soon (hopefully anyway). Opening the pub door and pushing everyone back in as they fall out, before squeezing into a gap yourself

LoopyLou
26-04-2004, 12:05
definitely the people.

You can strike a conversation with any body you meet,
...on the bus
....in the park
'''in a shop queue
and you won;t be looked at as weird or a perv..

its just a friendly place to be

God yes! My mum's YP unequalled to this day, although I've tried. .... and Castleton. We used to catch a train at Heeley and go to someplace or other (going through Totley Tunnel was the best), then walk on to Castleton. Mum was in her late forties by then, but she was an Olympian walker (you had to be, didn't you?).

I remember a little shop or other stuffed with relics and Blue John. The flies in amber still haunt me to this day.

We used to climb the sides of Winnats Pass and stuff our pockets with scraps of Blue John until we got to the top, where the wind was so strong we could lean on it and not fall over, and way over there was Mam Tor, and looking over it all was Peverell Castle.

.....at least, that's how I remember it....

....and while we're at it, what I wouldn't give for a slice of Hovis smothered in dripping right now!

yep, I have missed many things.
in my childhood when in sheffield in winter i dug out real snow & slush off the pavement, so we could walk a bit safer but by far it was snow ball fights that i enjoyed
in autumn collecting conkers but the game iwas not good at.
summer rolling down hill in longley park and making daisy chains
while gassing about not much

I'd miss the gaping potholes,
the litter at my feet.
I'd miss the constant struggle,
as ice, takes hold my street.

I'd miss the dear sweet children,
lobbing stones at my front door,
I'd yearn for sleeping policemen,
scraping my car floor.

I'd miss the empty dwellings,
and phone lines up above,
but, most of all, I think I'd miss,

THIS CITY, THAT I LOVE.

Now I can miss the friends I left in other places, I should try to be better at staying in touch,

Friendly people.
Beer (with a head on it).
Henderson's Relish.
Fishcakes.
anything up to 40 to 50,000 people turning up on a regular basis to watch two pretty poor footy teams.
Gloriously miserable old folk LOL
How we never quite get things right.
Potted Dog on a doorstep.
Good cup of tea.

But I'm not planning on moving just yet.

Hope this doesn't depress you too much------but I think these days you'd be very lucky to find a pub with live music and a decent fish and chip shop within walking distance of your home.!
As an ex-pat , myself , I can hazard a guess as to what a lot of us miss but I'm afraid Sheffield's changed a lot these past few years. I miss not being able to buy a good , informative newspaper but I guess , at least , you can STILL do that in Sheffield these days----at least I hope so !

What I miss most of all is the experience of going into a pub, thick with smoke, solid with people, loud conversation, Dinah Washington on the juke box, or Billy Eckstine, or Nat Cole, all along with a carcase full of good beer, and knowing full well at the back of your mind that another pint will see you well out of it. E.G. The 'Cricketers' on Division Street or the 'Lion' back of the City Hall, circa 1955, never ever been bettered.

I was so glad to go, yet now Ifind myself looking back with so much fondness. Most of what I miss has been separated from me by time though, not distance...

I miss the Wap, The Drop (at the City Hall Ballroom) and later the Corporation, live music at the Hallamshire, going to Everest for a curry, the whole Devonshire Green area before it became uber-trendy, stumbling home at night down streets so familiar that no amount of booze could make you go astray, having to hide in public places to avoid running into past loves, and the most loyal and caring group of friends in the world. All my college days and time spent biding my time on the dole line... dark days, though never to be forgotten. Back in those days it was like every day was an episode of Spaced...

I'd love to go back and visit (I'd kill for a time machine to do it all over again too), but I guess I'm afraid of how much will have changed. Perhaps the memories will have to be enough...

But man, what memories :)

Hi Albatross ! My son lives in Port Coquitlam and is visiting for Thanksgiving. If you wouldn't mind giving me the name and address of the shop I'll see if he can bring some. I'm not sure where Langley is in relation to Vancouver so I don't know whether this will happen or not. Thanks

I miss cosiness, cosy pubs, they'awful now ,Imean most young people wouldn.t know what a decent pub is ,in the past they never had ear drum smashing music, they did'nt have cigrerette machines, they did'nt sell chemical beer. they were for proper drinkers, not **** head yobs hooligans.i used to go to pubs and meet intresting people, not people sitting on the floor drinking out of tins,i can;t stand it, young people ruin pubs. i miss company,i feel nostalgic for genuinely interesting people, genuine bohemians .now they:re full of creeps,I miss conversation, not ''what do you do''every one has to have some sort of job that they can quickly describe as if that some how sums them up for the other person,i mean life isn,t just about working, there,s no virtue in work for its own sake its a myth that was invented by people like d.h. lawrence to keep people down the coal mines. now go and get a nice glass of something to drink ,sit by a log fire with a good book and be cosy for ***** sake.

Our nearest Publix is 20 miles away. But we have a store called The World Market. They sell foods and drinks from all over the world!! (obvious) Anyway, I can buy English PG Tips teabags but they are expensive. I did find a brand called Lifeboat Tea, which is $4.25 for 80. Proceeds go to the RNLI. Made in Regis. When I moved to Liverpool, I missed:

the hills
the cheap bus fares (5p for kids)
the best school friends I ever made
great teachers
all the parks and museums
being the cleanest industrial city in the world
the (relatively) clean environment
being the safest city in the country
and the friendly people

However, I was living in Liverpool all though the nineties, and I get the impression Sheffield suffered quite badly

Lots of people seem to miss fishcakes. In Lincoln you can actually get them (and they're almost as good) but they call them fritters. They also have "fishcakes", but they are what Sheffield folk call rissoles. Funny lot in Lincoln... The best fishcakes were from Gordon Booth's chip shop in Taplin Road, with little bits of parsley in with the fish.
