View Full Version : Please Help! Final Look Over & Checking Required Before I Buy Custom Built Parts 4 PC
jamesconner3 25-01-2006, 01:28 I'm building a PC, chosen my parts, can you guys please check it before i buy, thanks.
Please confirm the compatability of my chosen components & inform me of any problems i might encounter while building it (its my first time) or any other feedback, comments, thanks. My components are:

also will the 350W Power Supply that comes with that case be okay? or should i buy this 500W one? (http://www.ebuyer.com/customer/products/index.html?action=c2hvd19wcm9kdWN0X292ZXJ2aWV3&product_uid=61308)
mr chris 25-01-2006, 07:03 350w definitely won't be enough. I had a 400w that I blew with an Athlon 3000!
After a load of trouble with flakey power supplies, I went with This (http://www.aria.co.uk/ProductInfoComm.asp?ID=19635) 620w bad boy. It might have cost £110, but boy was it worth it!
PSUs are something people overlook and skimp on, but a fried power supply can fry your board and possibly most of the hardware attached (as I found out).
I'd also recommend an aluminium case, as the one you're looking at doesn't have much airflow and Athlons can pump put a lot of heat!
Don't go with the 'value' power supply, get a decent branded one.

actually the venice core A64's don't generate as much heat as you'd think, they're actually quite good with their heat dissipation :)
I totally agree with a quality power supply though, if you go for a cheap one then you'll have voltage spikes and low voltages on most of the rails... especially a 350w... i had a 520w cheapo thing and it's voltages were terrible, it was quickly replaced with a nice 520 OCZ modstream power supply which has been fantastic so far with my power hungry system :)
With that motherboard you want a SATA hard drive not a PATA hard drive.
I told you in a previous thread that 'value' power supplys were no good, and even reccomended one that would do what you wanted, and cost under 50 quid. But, if you want to skimp on the most important part of the system, go ahead. Just dont come complaining when it blows and takes the rest of your components with it, along with their warranty.
GabbleRatcht 25-01-2006, 10:39 Agreed on the SATA, but it only supports SATA 1, so don't get a SATA 2.
Also agree on the PSU. I use Antec. They also do top quality cases with their PSU's built in

sorry, i forgot to say, the reason i've chose that ATA Hard Drive is because i have already bought it, bought it a coulpe of months ago as a upgrade for my current PC.

If these value power supply's blow so easily or are that bad then why has this Ebuyer Extra Value Silver 500w ATX Power Supply (http://www.ebuyer.com/customer/products/index.html?action=c2hvd19wcm9kdWN0X292ZXJ2aWV3&product_uid=61308) got 5 stars and is recommended by all the people who bought it (read the 54 reviews on that link).
I dont mean to be rude but i just dont understand.
Probably because all the people who bought it were using it in systems far less power hungry than the one youre building. It says there its 500w. Youll be lucky if it puts out half that when its under load. Add into that the fact that the power coming out of it wont be particularly well regulated, and that the voltage levels are probably pretty slack (ie 11.2-3v on the 12v line, 4.5v on the 5v) and its just not worth the risk when you could pay another 20-30 quid and get something decent, that wont end up costing you more money in the long run. Youd be better off spending 43 quid on this (http://www.ebuyer.com/customer/products/index.html?action=c2hvd19wcm9kdWN0X292ZXJ2aWV3&product_uid=90617), which will, apart from being far more stable than the 10 quid piece of crap reffered to earlier, will be much quieter, and will last a lot longer. But, as said before, if you think you know better, buy the cheap one. Just dont come asking me for more advice when it kills the rest of your components.
neeeeeeeeeek 25-01-2006, 18:28 Look at the Antec quiet cases, Ebuyer sell them. They do 2 cases with different PSU's. I have one and they are stunning, very quiet and very high quality, and 450w or above, they cost about £70.
fnkysknky 26-01-2006, 07:44 As above get a better PSU and you'll have yourself a nice system. Athlon 64's are good when it comes to heat so wouldn't worry about the case too much.
Can't stress the importance of a good PSU though. A crap one can cause all sorts of unexpected problems.

Not sure this is much of a recommendation:
Was good. Blew after 6 months normal use. Took the motherboard with it, though luckily the CPU survived.
So, for £10 (then), I had to spend another £50 on a new mobo.
Mine was the Encer model. Waiting for replacement... in two minds whether or not to go for a branded model this time, it may well work out cheaper in the long run!
jamesconner3 26-01-2006, 14:20 does anyone know if this Antec TruePower II 430W 20-24pin PSU (http://www.ebuyer.com/customer/products/index.html?action=c2hvd19wcm9kdWN0X292ZXJ2aWV3&product_uid=90617) also has the normal ATA connectors?
i know it has the SATA connectors but i need to know wheather it has PATA because the hard drive and DVD drive that i will be using require ATA.
Thank You
yes it will have regular molex connectors... all power supply's do :)
my knowledge is to a degree, which the angle is unclear.
