View Full Version : Would you own up to smashing someone's car?
Skatiechik 19-03-2004, 10:22 Inlight of two incidents to both my car's this week. One being reversed into in a carpark, and the other having its rear passenger door driven into in a carpark with no note being left on either car.
So I would just like to see a poll on how many of us are honest to own up if they damage someones elses car and leave a note with details on the car.
DaBouncer 19-03-2004, 10:39 I would.
On the say I passed my test I bumped into someone on a round about. Can hardly deny it I know since the driver was IN the car.
However it didn't cause any damage and the driver only took my mobile phone details. He contacted me and said it was just a little scratch to the paint work and would only cost £30.
I paid up without any fuss!
I'd like to think if someone did that to my car they would own up to it! Sadly I doubt most would!
Not so long ago I came back to the car to find a note under the windscreen. "Sorry I caught your car while I was getting my disabled mother out of mine. Please call me to tell me how much it will cost"
The paint was chipped on the door rubbing strip, not too bad.
Did I call her? How could I be so heartless.
Was I having my leg pulled? Probably :(
DaBouncer 19-03-2004, 11:00 When did you become a MOD Tony? They sneaked that one in the back passage so to speak :P
Or is it Ruscoe and you've just dropped your surname bit
It all happened yesterday DB... watch your step now mate ;)
On 2 occasions this has happened to me. Once I parked in a car park where the old ABC cinema was and came back to find my car was dinted badly, no note left. That used to be an horrible car park, very uneven ground and not much room to manoeuvre. On the other occasion had parked in a shoping centre and came back to find a note under my wiper saying that this person had caught my car while backing out and the guy left his number (although the guy did have a company car so probably no skin off his nose) I couldn't see any damage just a small scratch on my bumper so I let it go.

RPG - you've got me seriously worried! :o
jackthedog 19-03-2004, 11:47 See, I had my car pranged last year (whilst parked) by what looks to have been a large truck. Only a bit of body damage and, to be honest, on my car it's no great hardship. Just left it how it is...
But, despite my strict 'do as you would be done by' philosophy, I think in these days of everybody trying to shaft everybody else, in this situation i'd be inclined to drive off.
Unless I did a great deal of damage, i'd think of it as a hazard of owning a car.
Thing is, you leave your details, and the owner of the car then claims fourteen times as much money from you as it's gonna cost em to fix it. I've been shafted so many times by others that *if I could get away with it* I probably would just leave the scene.
Actually, depends what car it was. You can tell a lot about a person from their car, and if I didnt like the look of the car, i'd probably buzz off.
I'm fed up of being honest and getting no reward.
I dont beleive in any sort of heaven, so what's the point being honest and good all our lives? The country has already gone to sh*t, and it cant ever be reversed. So whats the point?
I once caught someones bumper on the side of my passenger door as I was reverse parking, saw her when I was getting back in and told her about it. There wasn't a mark on hers but I had a little dent. Typical that I never happens the other way round though does it?
jackthedog 19-03-2004, 11:55 Hmm, my above statement is overruled if the car I prang is a classic or rare example, or a very well kept old car. If it looks like someone's pride and joy, I wouldnt have the heart.
But if it's just a normal tin box, then they're fair game. As I am.
My brother's car once got scratched by an idiot not being able to park. They drove off without admitting it, but when my brother got back, there was a note under the windscreen wiper from a dog walker who'd seen it happen. As it happened, the damage was nominal - about £50 or so - but because the driver drove off, it ended up costing them a day's work to come to court, as well as a couple of hundred pounds in costs.
I check for dog walkers before I drive off.

How often does this occur?!

That was very kind of the dog walker, I wish more people were like that.
jackthedog, you are a bad man.

With that kind of attitude is it any wonder people perceive the country's going to the dogs?
Or perhaps you were being ironic and I missed it, in which case sorry.
I voted yes as on one occasion where someone reversed into me a witness saw it happen and left a note. The perp, when traced, had the choice of a new bumper £900 (plus police and insurance involvement) or repair for £200. He went for repair, suprisingly.

I'm not. I'm a good man. That's the problem.
I've been honest my whole life. Never done any wrong to anyone. Now, after having absolutely no reward for it, i'm starting
to get fed up with it.
I'm a polite driver - so people take advantage and push in in queues.
If I find a wallet, I hand it in. When i've lost my wallet it's never been returned. Its been kept.
I dont force things to get my own way - I am not selfish. Other people who cheat and force things get their own way.
Had car smashed many times in my absence. Never got any come back on it - just had to cough up the bill on my own.
Nobody treats me the way I treat others. Nobody has ever helped me like I have others. I'm fed up of getting shafted.
It's a one way thing. We are nice, polite and honest.
Others lie, cheat, steal and take advantage.
And who has more fun?
Nice guys finish last? Ex-bloomin-actly.
jackthedog 19-03-2004, 13:29 All that sounded like some crying-out-for-sympathy crap.
It's not. I'm just explaining the thoughts behind my earlier posts.

It's been going to the dogs as long as I can remember. Me being my nice self doesnt seem to be changing things.
The nice people are vastly outnumbered by the not-so-nice. How could we possibly turn things around now?

I'd be tempted to agree with you. Anyone ever seen what it's like in France - every car is damaged - they don't call 'em bumpers for nothing....
Of course it doesn't surprise me that no one else has had the balls to admit that they might consider it to - must not forget everyone on here is an angel ;)
purplepippa 19-03-2004, 16:56 When I read this thread title, I completely misinterpreted it. I thought it meant if you smash up someone's car, like with a baseball bat or something, in revenge, would you admit to it.
So I'll answer that first!! I probably would try and get away with it, but equally, it seems highly unlikely I ever *would* do that, and I'd like to think that if I did, then it would be for a REALLY REALLY good reason, in which case I'd probably be honest to make my point about why I did it!
In terms of the real question, I don't drive (I can but don't) but if I did I'd like to think I'd be honest, unless it was a tiny tiny scratch or whatever in which case I probably wouldn't bother. Of course I'd double check for anyone who might have seen, especially dog walkers it seems!!
Got to agree with jack on this one Im afraid.
Honesty=mug in this day and age,yes there are some honest people out there, but few and far between.

Sadly it's this kind of attitude that makes things worse and worse every day. Sorry Jack, not having a go at you matey cos sometimes I feel exactly the same, but I just think it's really sad that people feel this way.
posting this in case the culprit sees it lol
today at work at donny royal infirmary a red fiesta backed into a car parked in a disabled bay doing damage to the front skirting and bumper.
despite several people seeing this occur, and advising the driver what she had done, she drove off.
we have your number and the tape from cctv, you really should have stayed.

I know how you feel. Thing is, whenever I do something sh*tty, it always comes back on me, prob'y cos I feel guilty and look for a payback so I can move on without it being on my head.
One thing I've found helps, especially when someone is being out of order: I can walk way, and they have to carry on being that person..
I hit the car door next to mine when the wind took control. It was slghtly dented with my paintwork visible as well. I crapped my pants and drove off. I felt terrible at the time and still feel terrible now. The same happened to me shortly afterwards so I guess what goes around comes around.
The worst thing of it all is I knew who the car belonged to, but wimped out of telling them. I'm punishing myself inside.
A few months later I reversed into a car, frantically trying to avoid a car who was going to reverse into me. This time, the driver was present, but damage was worse to mine han to his so he didnt take my details. The car I tried to avoid buggered off quick sharp. Again, what goes around, comes around I think. I think i'm on level terms now.

Hmm, that seems to be the case for the honest people. But the dishonest cheating types never seem to pay for their bad actions...

kittykat 22-03-2004, 23:14 well after having my wing mirror knocked off twice by idiots who drive too close i wouldnt feel too bad about not saying anything. If it was a big expensive car i probs wouldnt say anything as i have no money at all and the chances are theyd miss the money far less than me.

If they had been on your front then it could have been a wheelie bin, but that doesn't count apparently.
