View Full Version : Toothache - how to take the pain away?
I recently had a brace fitted (as most fo you know) but they left 1 tooth without a bracklet for it to be taken out by my local dentist, so yesterday i went had the tooth out and everything was fine until the numbness started to ware off, now im in so much pain its unbelieveable, ive taken lots of different pain killers even though i dont really like them, put lots of bonjela around the hole and even held my hot water bottle to the side of my face but nothing seem to have worked and im still sat in so much pain its untrue.
Does anyone know or have any other ideas how i can get rid of this pain as it is driving me mad.
Thanks
bjshooter 24-01-2006, 17:06 Get someone to hit your toe with a hammer:hihi:
Kthebean 24-01-2006, 17:06 If you have any spirits, vodka is the best, wash your mouth out with them, numbs the pain quite nicely for a bit.
Or, break your toe. Doesn't stop it hurting but kind of redirects the pain.
Yellowrose 24-01-2006, 17:09 Kathy is right, I used to use Drambuie, but I suppose vodka, gin or whisky would do. When you get a mouthful, swish it round then hold it against the offending tooth for a while before swallowing.
You could also try gargling with soluble paracetamol, not as much fun though.
Ginger_Kitty 24-01-2006, 17:11 try ice instead of a hot water bottle, it will take the swelling down better and hopefully numb it a bit (don't put ice directly on it, wrap it in something and put it to your face)
what pain killers have you taken?
If you go to your GP and explain they should be able to give you something slightly stronger that you can't buy over the counter. They'll work you up, so they'll put you on the lowest possible pain killer first and then work up if it doens't help.
Don't let them fob you off with paracetamol though if you've already tried it, you'll just be paying money for a prescription you don't need.
ToryCynic 24-01-2006, 17:15 Try turps/white spirit - gets rid of paint easily.
:hihi:
Agree with em, Ice works better.
You could also try crunching some ice cubes or buying some ice lollies and sucking on them.
thanks everyone i dont have any vodka but i do have taboo so i will try that, i will also try ice.
Could mods please edit where i have written 'paint' to 'pain' please thanks :D

Don_Kiddick 24-01-2006, 17:23 Get a dispersible aspirin.
Break it into quarters.
Put one quarter against the gum/ between the cheek next to the painfull tooth.
Allow it to dissolve. It will taste like sh*t.
Spit out the dissolved 'froth'. That way the painkilling effect works directly at the site without you actually consuming the whole of the aspirin.
Works for about an hour or so, repeat with next quater etc.
Do Not exceed stated dose on bottle
See dentist asap.
Squashie28 24-01-2006, 18:25 Paramol are the strongest painkillers you can get over the counter and I seriously recomend them.
I had the worst ear infection not so long ago where the whole side of my face had swollen, I looked so odd, the pain was unbearable and I dont normally make a habit of taking painkillers or any drugs like they are smarties but I was really suffering so I took 3 paramol instead of the usual 2 and I can positively say that within 15 mins I was pain free.
I also recomend getting as much sleep as possible as this helps as well.
Hope you get better soon
Jo
You've got a very low pain tolerance haven't you, god knows what you'd be like in childbirth! :D
Seriously though, most of the above is advice for toothache not for a tooth you've had pulled, and some could result in a nasty infection if you have an open wound. You just want warm salt water washes and some painkillers to swallow, stronger ones from the GP if really necessary but it won't last long.
Would advise you to rinse with a hot salty mouthwash, glass of hot water with a teaspoon of salt dissolved.
Dont like to contradict people but I cant recommend holding aspirin against it. Aspirin is an acid and can burn an ulcer in your gum. Its pain killing effects target the sensation in the brain so if your using it just swallow the correct dose.
Be carefull with painkillers you shouldnt use them more than 4 times in any one day if possible, save 2 doses for nighttime. Leave 4 hours at least between doses. When you do take some make sure you take enough e.g. 400 mg Ibuproven, if you take little doses it will not work but you still cant take anymore for 4 hours.
If its only been a day the pain may just be normal trauma. However if the pain continues or even feels worse over the next day or two you may have a dry socket. This is where the bloodclot in the socket is lost and food is packing into it. If you suspect this is happening you should return to the dentist who extracted the tooth and he/she may place a resorbable dressing. Unfortunately dry sockets can stay fairly painful for 10 days or longer before gradually healing up.
InvalidUser 24-01-2006, 19:19 When I had my wisdom teeth out my dentist recommended Nurofen as being particually good for dental pain.
lizzmobile 24-01-2006, 19:47 I'd recommend clove oil but Twiglet is right about infection. Check with a herbalist, or just eat loads of McDonald's. They numb your mouth alright.
Totally sympathise with you re the pain (and I had a baby with no pain relief!); I had an abcess on a root whilst in Paris during a national holiday. Only dentist was the teaching hospital. You've heard stories about them kneeling on your chest, well this was the one. I wailed in agony and he told me I could either go home or shut up. He didn't offer death, which I would have willingly chosen.
GoGo_dancer 25-01-2006, 09:07 Sounds like you have dry socket, this is quite common following extractions, I should know cause I've had it and I was in pain for almost 2 weeks.
Definately try the clove oil on some cotton gauze for short term relief but you may need stronger painkillers. Have a word with your dentist and he may be able to prescribe something as you may find that over the counter painkillers don't even take the edge off it.
Hope you feel better soon!
diskoheaven 25-01-2006, 09:53 I had the same thing done over a week ago and can sympathise with you. I have stitches in mine and its quite painful!
The dentist advised me to take nurofen and paracetamol together, to make sure u get the max relief take the nurofen, then 2 hours later take paracetamol, then 2 hours later take more nurofen etc. That way you have a top up of pain relief every 2 hours. Make sure you don't exceed the stated dose though.
Rinsing with salt water is a definitly a good idea, it would get so much more painful if it got infected!
Also when eating and drinking try and avoid getting things on that area of your mouth, using a straw for drinks is good for this!
Hope you feel better soon! Jen xxx
I'd go with the dry socket as I too have experienced these twice, you need to go back to your dentist and he will put a dressing on it which will soothe it straight away, only wash your mouth with warm salt water. You may need to have this dressing changed every day for a few days till it settles down.
English Glory 25-01-2006, 20:01 Haven't had any for a bit but always puffing the cheeks out so look like a monkey with mouth closed seems to work. It seems to warm it up and dulls the pain.
It's not ideal and it doesn't go away when cheeks aren't puffed out but looking like a monkey certainly works for me as a short-term gap before having to be pillaged by the dentist for payment.
