View Full Version : Forum Mah Jong meet - important news
redrobbo 23-01-2006, 23:49 As I am unable to currently access my buddy list, or perform a search to bring up an existing thread, I am resorting to this announcement.
The forum mah jong meet scheduled for the DevCat this Thursday, 26 Jan at 7.30p.m. is CANCELLED.
From memory, the following forummers confirmed they would be attending...
Doublewood, Edd, Feargal, Plain Talker, ptigga, TeaFan,Tracie, and 1 other!
I've had to cancel as there is an excess of players, and insufficient sets of mah jong tiles to play with! My apologies for any inconvenience caused.
There are 2 new dates as follows....
Mon 30 Jan 7.30pm - Spanna2005 & redrobbo will bring mah jong sets.
Tue 31 Jan 7.30pm. - Goldenturkey & redrobbo will bring mah jong sets.
There is no need to PM or reply to this post. If you can make either or both of the nights - please just turn up! There will be sufficient sets of tiles to play with on both evenings. If you are interested in learning to play mah jong, no previous knowledge is required - just arrive at the Dev Cat on Monday and/or Tuesday night!
Red
Plain Talker 24-01-2006, 00:05 I can't make Monday, Redrobbo, but I can do Tuesday.
PT
redrobbo 24-01-2006, 00:05 See you on Tuesday PT
Red, I can bring along a set on Thursday, I've got one piece missing, but I can make it up by marking up one of the blank tiles. Anyway, let me know what you want to do. I'd still like to play on Thursday if possible.
I won't be able to make the other two meets on Monday or Tuesday of next week, but I should be able to make any meets the week after.
Ptigga.
Mah Jong, is that like 5s and 3s?
redrobbo 24-01-2006, 18:22 Mah Jong, is that like 5s and 3s?
No.
But come along and find out about mah jong 12bore. You are very welcome.
The mah joing meet due on Thu 26 Jan remains CANCELLED.
The search facility still doesn't appear to be working, and I cannot access the usual announcement thread. I have now PM'd everyone on the mah jong list to inform them of the cancellation and the new dates. It took ages to PM everyone idividually - as my mah jong buddy list wasn't working last night (but it's back today!).
Please refer to the OP above for details of the new dates.
Red
SpiderPete 24-01-2006, 18:22 I shall be making my "debut" in February.
Better go get some practise now.
No.
But come along and find out about mah jong 12bore. You are very welcome.
I would be delighted to come and have a game of Mah Jong with you, but I don’t have any transport at the moment, living out in the wild outskirts of the city I an reliant on the bus. I also have a previous appointment most Monday’s, but I will ask the old ball and chain if she will let me stay out late one night.:hihi:

Why not bring Mrs 12bore along? I too have a regular commitment on a Monday, and am hoping that the meeting I'm going to won't run over time.
Confirmed players......
Mon - Spanna2005, goldenturkey, redrobbo
Tue - Plain Talker, goldenturkey, redrobbo
Hoping to make it..... Feargal (doesn't know which night yet).
I anticipate a few others will turn up on one or both nights. So, do come along 12bore if you can. If you want, I can arrange to meet you beforehand, as I don't believe we've ever seen you at a forum meet, and I know how shy some folks can be coming to their first forum meeting. PM me if this suggestion is helpful.

Yes Red I am very shy, but I will try and persuade my better half to come with me for support. I am very nervous about being in public on my own. I am not one for large crowds and putting myself forward. But just for you I may well give it a try.

We are a friendly lot. We don't bite. We try to make new faces feel welcome.
Don't be put off, do feel free to come along to a meet, and get to know us!

where is this Dev Cat where you are meeting?
The Devonshire Cat. (http://www.devonshirecat.co.uk/content.php)
My eyes are not folling me, right ? It reads 'mah jong' doesn't it ? *gasps*
Btw, a daft Q but, you don't play for money, do you ?
It's a very complicated game. Most ppl I know that play are chinese, and they play with different rules and styles. I'd love to come if my commitments allow me to. ..^^.. ! Are your mah jong sets in the form of cards (like the game, 'Mhing') or are they those little plastic sets ?

Hiya Bago -
Your eyes do not deceive you. The forum mah jong meets have now been running for a couple of weeks. Interest continues to grow.
To answer your questions....
: No, we don't play for money. (My bank balance wouldn't sustain my losses for a start!). We do score points though.
: We have a variety of tile sets between us, made of wood, plastic, and.....an antique wood and ivory set.
: It may seem a complicated game, but I have actually taught a group of 11yr old schoolkids how to play - and they quickly picked up the rules and method of play.
: All beginners are welcome to join us. No previous knowledge of the game, or experience of playing mah jong, is required.
So, let's hope your commitments don't prevent you from joining us at the Devonshire Cat, next Mon 30 and/or Tue 31 Jan, 7.30pm.
Red
redrobbo 30-01-2006, 12:26 A reminder that mah jong meets are being held tonight and tomorrow night (Mon 30 & Tue 31 Jan) at the Devonshire Cat, 7.30pm onwards.
New players are very welcome. No previous knowledge of the game is required. Free tuition.
If you can't make it tonight or tomorrow, but are interested in coming along to learn to play on a future date, please send me a PM, and I will add your name to the mah jong buddy list - which guarantees preferential notification!
goldenturkey 31-01-2006, 09:54 Dear All
Nice night last night for Redrobbo, Spanna2005 and the noob Emma (who's forum name I've forgotten) who in the longstanding tradition of the Mah Jong forum produced devastating scores and put us all to shame.
Red and I will be in the Dev Cat on Tuesady, from half 7 with several Mah Jong sets to choose from. So hope people can make it, the more the merrier.
CHRIS
Plain Talker 01-02-2006, 00:08 Well, turned up at the Dev, and found that there was only myself and Golden turkey to play Mah Jong.
Never mind, it wasn't a problem, as you can play Mah Jong with two players.
We had a very pleasant evening, of conversation and the game was excellent.
And I found out he lives not too far away from here, too, all in all, a very diverting night.
And I'll tell you what, I can see why the Chinese go a bundle on playing it, it's great fun.
Oh, and after me doing really well, leading almost all the way through, doing ever so well with high scores and doubles and what-have-you, GT pipped me at the post in the final round to win. Well done, GT!
PT
ToryCynic 01-02-2006, 00:52 Out of interest, do you guys have the tiles faced down, when putting them back in the 'pile'? (I'm talking about the section that the wall 'protects').
:)
Spanna2005 01-02-2006, 11:19 no, we place them face up when we discard them as we're quite nice like that :)
ToryCynic 01-02-2006, 11:39 no, we place them face up when we discard them as we're quite nice like that :)
Makes life considerably nicer.
:D
Well, that's one card game done... How about a game of Poker in the Cat next, strip Poker with Sian and Medusa as the strippers... Lol.
Yeah I know, I'm naughty, feel free to tell me off Sian ;)
goldenturkey 01-02-2006, 12:54 Just to mirror Plaintalker's comments about last night (it was about a 20 point margin of victory!!), it was exceptionally nice to play with someone who has picked up the rules quickly and plays well and tactically.
It was slightly dissapointing to find only myself and her there when quite a few people had said they were coming. I quite fully expect to get flamed for being 'arsey' but if you say you're coming, please come!
All in all I look forward to the next Mah Jong Forum meet, so I can get the Flower tiles out with Plaintalker, and she can whip my ass (oeer!) in the 're-match'.
CHRIS
alchemist 01-02-2006, 13:59 Point taken :) sadly the missus had a wisdom tooth out last thurs and the damn thing got infected so she was in absolute AGONY!!! :( we are hoping to make the next one tho

I've even been out and bought a mah-jongg set so I can play at home.
Mark may not be able to make it, on tuesday, BTW.
Goldenturkey:-
Thank you for the game on tues night, it was very enjoyable.
I'm still struggling with the "pungs" "chaos" and "Quong"s, I'm still shouting out "Ooh ! mine! a three!" or "I've got a four!" lol
Never mind, it's wonderfully diverting! I'm getting well and truly hooked!

CHRIS
PS. You want a lift back if you're there again?
No, GT, I bought the proper game, so Mark and I can play it at home, now I know it can be played with two players (- I had thought it HAD to be four).
However, i'm more than a bit disappointed/ annoyed/ hacked off with the set I bought, ( brand new, BTW, from John Lewis!!!) as it contains only three "sixes -of-coins" and five "fours-of-coins.." and there's a discrepancy in the bambooes as well. (Rant, rave, growl!)
A lift back would be great, please, if it won't take you too out of your way. ;)
thanks!
PT
goldenturkey 03-02-2006, 12:01 Ooooh that must really grind!!!
Take it back, and there is a lovely Bone set on Ebay, and a really chunky bakalite set too, at the mo..so get a refund and hang on!!!!
Let me know what you want to do.
By the way lifts are easy, so you're more than welcome if we're both there!
CHRIS

goldenturkey 07-02-2006, 11:22 Hi Tracie
Yep I shall be there tonight, so the more the merrier.
Get here when you can, we normally shuffle in between 7-30 and 8 ish, so you'll get in on a game at some time.
You played before?
CHRIS
Hi Chris
I played at one of the Mah Jong meets a fortnight or so ago, so I do have some idea of the rules but I'm by no means an expert :) I can probably get there for 7.30pm :D
redrobbo 07-02-2006, 12:45 Looking forward to seeing you again Tracie
Peter41 now has an unavoidable work commitment, so can't make it tonight.
Final reminder......
The next forum mah jong meet will be held TONIGHT (Tuesday 07 February)at The Devonshire Cat on - from 7.30 onwards. Anyone interested in playing, or learning to play, are most welcome. Just turn up tonight, and we'll get you started!
czechroman 07-02-2006, 20:13 what excatly is mah ju jong? , whats in entail?
redrobbo 08-02-2006, 00:30 What an enjoyable forum mah jong meet we've had tonight! 7 players, who were Doublewood, Edd, Goldenturkey, Plain Talker, redrobbo, Tracie....and a big welcome to our newest player VinceB.
In keeping with the forum mah jong tradition (well, we feel we've been going long enough now to at least create a couple of traditions.....) the newbie won!
What's more, VinceB won in convincing style. Even when Goldenturkey declared mah jong, and scored a creditable 52 points -
VinceB won that round with a triumphant score of 72! Qoungs, concealed pungs, a pung of the Wind of trhe Round - there was no stopping VinceB, and he didn't even know the rules when he sat down to play his first game! :wow:
The next forum mah jong meet will be held at The Devonshire Cat on
Thursday 16 Feb, starting at 7.30pm. PMs now being sent to everyone on the mah jong buddy list.
The usual standing invitation - whether you've played before, or never played, you are welcome to join us on this night.
redrobbo 08-02-2006, 01:39 what excatly is mah jong? , whats in entail?
Mah jong is a wonderfully entertaining game which originated in China. It is played extensively throughout the Far East. Although it is a gambling game, the Forum Mah Jong meets play for points only!
Mah Jong (which translates as the 'twittering of the sparrows' - from the noise of the clinking tiles when shuffled at the beginning of each round) is played with a set of 144 tiles. These consist of 36 tiles in the Bamboo suit, 36 in the Circle suit, 36 in the Character suit, 16 Wind tiles (4 each of the East, West, North & South Winds), 12 Dragon tiles (4 each of the Red, Green and White Dragons) and 8 bonus tiles (4 Flowers and 4 Seasons). Each suit is numbered 1 to 9.
The aim is to collect sets of tiles according to the number and type shown on the face of each tile. A set of 3 identical tiles is called a Pung, 4 identical tiles is called a Qoung (or Kong), and a run of 3 tiles of the same suit is called a Chow. It's a bit like playing a card game of Rummy, where you collect 'hands', but using tiles instead of cards.
The game can be played by 2, 3 or 4 players - though 4 is best. There are various rituals which have to be observed. At the commencement of a round, a four sided wall is built with the tiles. The wall is then broken with each player being assigned fourteen tiles. A small 'dead' wall is also created, with tiles that only come into play in certain circumstances (see below).
The object is to try and play 4 sets of 'hands', which can be a mixture of Pungs, Qoungs or Chows, plus a matching pair (called the Sparrows Head). Each player picks up a tile from the wall, chooses whether to play a 'hand' (if they have one!), and then discards a tile. If a Qoung is played, or a Flower or Season tile is played, an extra tile is picked up from the dead wall. The first person to collect 4 sets of 'hands' plus a Sparrows Heads declares Mah Jong, and the round ends.
Each player is assigned a wind, and each round has a Wind of the Round. The first 4 rounds are East Wind rounds, and each player takes it in turn to be East, South, West and then North. In succeeding rounds the Wind of the Round changes to South, then West and lastly North. Thus, a full mah jong event would consist of 16 rounds. We managed 5 rounds tonight!
Points are awarded to each player. Chows don't score any points, Pungs score 2 points and Qoungs score 4 points. Points for tiles numbered 2 to 8 remain basic, but points are doubled for any Pung of tiles numbered 1 and 9, and Pungs of Winds and Dragons. Extra points are awarded for any Qoung of tiles numbered 2 to 8, and increased again for a Qoung of tiles numbered 1 and 9, and Qoungs of Winds and Dragons. You can collect a 'hand' by either picking up the required tile from the wall, or from a discard. 'Hands' where tiles are claimed from another player's discard are known as 'revealed hands'. 'Hands' where tiles are entirely picked up from the wall do not have to be declared to the other players, and are known as 'concealed hands'. Concealed hands (whether Pungs or Qoungs) score double points!
But that is not the end of the scoring system! After a player has declared mah jong, each player is awarded a basic score for any Pungs or Qoungs, both revealed and concealed. But each player doubles their basic score for any Pung or Qoung of their own wind, the wind of the round, or a Pung or Qoung of Dragons. Thus if the player who is East Wind has a Pung or Qoung of East Wind tiles, their score is doubled twice! It would also be doubled again if they had a Pung or Qoung of Dragons!
After the doubling scores have been completed, the player who declared mah jong might gain an extra 2 points for the Sparrows Head, and always gains an extra 20 points for having declared mah jong. That players score is then doubled again if they had no Chows in their hand, and doubled again and again if they have certain combinations of tiles, or if they have collected certain Season and/or Flower tiles. Thus we have already experienced rounds where Player 1 scores 2 points, Player 2 scores 12 points, Player 3 scores 30 points and Player 4 scores 380 points (or even more!). There is a doubling table to help those of us for whom maths is not our best subject!
In the gambling version, players pay the difference between their score and each of the other players scores. Given the high scores that are possible, you can see why we play for points and not for money!
Mah jong is both fun and addictive! If anyone is interested in learning to play, please PM me, and I'll add your name to the forum mah jong buddy list - which ensures you receive notice of each game night. We hold our meets at the Devonshire Cat, and usually have a couple of tables reserved for play.
Because of varying commitmentrs, we are not able to meet on a regular mid-week night, so check this thread to see which night of the week we are next meeting to play.
No prior knowledge of the game is required, as our newbie player VinceB demonstrated tonight. The rest of us reckoned it was beginners luck mind you! :suspect: But it certainly is now becoming a tradition that a newbie player trounces the regulars! :hihi:
Thanks to everyone for a very fun evening - especially to goldenturkey for giving me a helping hand in my first game!
I'll try my best to make next week, depending on which day you decide to play :D
goldenturkey 08-02-2006, 13:28 Good turn out for Tuesday night, with seven people and luckily two sets of tiles to play with.
As stated above the noob trounced everyone, and even a mah jong score of 50+ didn't phase Vince.
Anyway, battle will recommence next Thursday evening.
I keep bashing on about this but check out Ebay for Mah Jong sets and check out this web site for resources.

goldenturkey 09-02-2006, 14:43 Hi Tracie
No problem, more than welcome to help (not like you both needed it). It was a pleasure to just watch the look of mental anguish on Edd's face when he had to break up his hand to claim a discard!
CHRIS
redrobbo 09-02-2006, 21:24 42fta has confirmed she will be attending next Thursday night.
At least we now know the name of the newbie who's going to trounce the regulars! :hihi:
Plain Talker 10-02-2006, 19:22 My Mah-jongg set has arrived this morning, which I won on ebay.
(*does a little "happy-dance"*)
Red, it's absolutely identical to yours!
I'm thrilled to little pieces with it.
I was terribly disappointed with the set that I had paid thirty-five quid for, from Coles, being faulty, cos those tiles were really, really nice. (it was, unfortunately, unplayable, cos it had five pieces of the four of circles, and only three of the two of circles. you can't make a set of four tiles if there's only three of the tile, can you? lol)
I'm looking forward to thursday, My boss has even said he might like to come along!
PT
Spanna2005 13-02-2006, 10:31 is anyone free to play tonight?
7.30pm at the Dev Cat as usual. Redrobbo, please could you reserve the tables?
I can't make tonight, but if there is still a meeting on Thursday night I can get to that one
Spanna2005 13-02-2006, 17:07 Ok, no game tonight.
And I forgot tomorrow is Valentines day so no game tomorrow either then!
I'll be turning up to the Mah Jong evening at the Dev Cat on Thursday after missing a few weeks.
I'm off on holiday for a week on Saturday and hope to teach Mah Jong to the people that I'm staying with. Unfortunately my set is not really suitable for teaching as it has a piece missing (luckily there are spares but I haven't marked one up yet), no western numbers on the tiles and no letters on the winds. I think it may be a bit tricky to teach chows on the characters set. Obviously too late to start looking on ebay.
Plain Talker: How much was the set you bought from John Lewis? Did they have more than just the one dud that they sold you? What materials were the tiles made of?
Plain Talker 13-02-2006, 22:33 Spanna,
Icame to the thread too late to get to the dev.. :(
Sorry. We could have had a two-handed game of mah-jong, like GT and I did the other week, when only we turned up...
pity.
Ptigga,
the set from john Lewis was £35, it was beautifully textured, 2-tone tiles, nylon, I think, looked authentic, like ivory. Nice crisp lettering, the reverse of the tiles was a jade-y green. came in a travel case. They said that they had more around the company, but that set was the only one in the Sheffield store. They offered to bring-in from another store, a similar set. but I was so hacked off, and I didn't trust it'd be correct. (I didn't want to wait, either!) There's some poor beggar out there playing with a set that's a "four of circles" light, and a "two of circles " too-many. lol

Ah well, that's the shopkeepers curse 'We can order it in for you'. I think I'll give that one a miss. Thanks for the info. I'll just have to make a few cheat-sheets for the people I'm teaching so that they can look up the numbers and the winds.
goldenturkey 14-02-2006, 00:09 Hi Ptigga
There are several 'modern' Mah Jong sets up for sale on ebay at the moment. Plaintalker's set was thin beech tiles, but there are many two-tone plastic sets in cases starting auctions at about £7 (ex postage).

Never spoke a truer word! - see scores below! :hihi:
Well a BIG BIG welcome to our mah jong newbies tonight, 42fta, Claire, Morton39 and Rickyegrant, who joined the regulars Doublewood, Edd, Goldenturkey, Plain Talker, ptigga, redrobbo & vinceb - making a record 11 players in all.
In keeping with the forum mah jong tradition, the newbies won!
After 4 rounds of the East Wind and 1 round of the South Wind the scores were -
Rickyegrant = 146 - the winner! :clap:
Morton39 = 118 - :thumbsup:
redrobbo = 88 :rolleyes:
42fta = 78 :thumbsup:
The next forum mah jong meet will be at the Devonshire Cat on Tuesday 21 February, starting at 7.30pm.
Whether you've never played mah jong before, just rusty, or a keen player - a warm welcome is extended to come along and join us on any play night. The play night varies - so please check this thread for all future announcements.
Plain Talker 17-02-2006, 11:19 On our table, it was Doublewood, Edd, Ptigga, and myself, playing against each other.
The games themselves were great, but we had three out of four!! Yes!!! Three!! No-scoring rounds because we got to the end of the wall of tiles, without anyone able to declare mah jong.
Edd won the one and only scoring round, because he was able to declare mah jong.
The funniest incident of the evening, IMO, had to be when the group of half a dozen Chinese students walked into the Dev Cat, halfway through our games, and clocked that we were playing MJ...
The expressions on their faces was priceless, at three tables all with a game of MJ going on. All I could make out of their conversation was "Mah-jong! mah-jong!"
Another fun night of playing MJ, anyway... I christened my new ebay set.
GT, and Mrs GT brought an unusual, but handsome set that they had bought in Thailand (IIRC).
OOH and I am so jealous of 42fta's beautiful, beautiful set of red-backed tiles. They are gorgeous! the ruby slipper of mah-jong tiles, IMO!
Can't wait till the next mj meet.
"chao!"
lol

Spanna2005 17-02-2006, 11:24 How funny!!
I'm gutted that I won't be able to join you for sessions as I'll be working away for 3 months :(
Would anyone be up for playing on a weekend?

Would anyone be up for playing on a weekend?
That's such a shame, spanna!
I would definitely be up for games on most Friday, or Saturday evenings:- Sundays will be more difficult as it will clash with the forum meets, unless you wanted to arrange to have a game from about 3/4 pm to 7/7.30pm, finishing before the meet commences?
PT
Spanna2005 17-02-2006, 12:24 Sunday afternoons will probably be better for getting tables to play on, perhaps?
goldenturkey 17-02-2006, 15:37 On the Goldenturkey, Vince and Mrs GT table- as no one was a noob - scores were low and uninspiring, but fun was had even though Claires set (Mrs GT) has no numbers or wind letters on (much scratching of heads and no collecting of characters went on).
Overall Vince won on 58, whilst everyone else finished on about 56, so close but no legendary cigars!
CHRIS
Sorry to hear Spanna can't make it, but we'll all probably be up to speed play by the time you return.
John - we must sit down and start the rules 'discussion' as soon as and get a forum quorum going.
Chow!
Just like to say how much we enjoyed yesterday evening.
It was great to meet everyone and am looking forward to the next time.
Thank you all, especially redrobbo. :)
goldenturkey 17-02-2006, 22:54 hi 42fta
I am ecstatic that you enjoyed yourself, and thanks for bringing such a wonderful set of tiles along too.
Its that sort of thing that might end up with chez Goldenturkey containing 3 mah jong sets!
chris
You might be right Chris. Sister, daughter & I went to York yesterday and found ourselves in a little shop called "Compendium" enquiring about tile racks already!
goldenturkey 18-02-2006, 23:29 Oooh Its a slippery slope!!
CHRIS
I've just bought 2 bits of Oak to make a set of racks. I already made some in Pine to try out the design.
Having the resources of a woodwork department on site is one of the fringe benefits of teaching, but its mainly spoilt by the students!
Plain Talker 19-02-2006, 23:37 The usual tables have been booked for Tuesday night, 7.30.
look forward to seeing folks there.

morton39 21-02-2006, 10:39 Hi all,
Thanks for fun packed Thursday evening. I'll be there tonight to bring a smile to your faces once again. :hihi:
Glad you liked the set I bought little sis 15 years ago.
Morton39
SpiderPete 21-02-2006, 12:15 I shall be there tonight, but mainly to get drunk with Sugarnspice & co, but I will come over and introduce myself and watch for a while, before I get too drunk :gag: and cannot see the tiles or whatever you play with :)

redrobbo 21-02-2006, 13:40 A reminder....
The next forum mah jong meet will be held TONIGHT, Tuesday 21 Feb, at The Devonshire Cat starting at 7.30pm.
The usual standing invitation - whether you've played before, or never played, you are welcome to join us tonight. If you've never played before, rest assured we'll have you playing in next to no time after a couple of rounds!
Qoung!
Red
PS And Happy Birthday to Sugarnspice from the forum mah jong club! We'll see you in person at the DevCat tonight...... along with a rather sober
peter41 of course. :suspect:
redrobbo 21-02-2006, 23:36 Well what another enjoyable night it's been playing mah jong! Of course, in keeping with the forum mah jong meet tradition, the regulars were once again beaten by a newbie! :hihi:
The scores after playing four rounds of the East Wind -
42fta = 260 points The winner! :clap:
redrobbo = 240 points :thumbsup:
Goldenturky = 214 points :bigsmile:
Morton39 = 144 points :smile:
Can anyone post the scores for the other table where Edd, Plain Talker, Tracie & Vinceb were playing?
PMs will be whizzing around over the next few days whilst we sort out a date for next weeks forum mah jong meet. Please watch this thread for an announcement in due course.
Plain Talker 22-02-2006, 10:49 ok,
Our table's results ( for Vince, Edd, Tracie and me)
Edd won, declaring a couple of mah jonggs, after a couple of no-scoring rounds. I can't remember the exact scores, because I made a hash of the first lot of scoring, doubling in the wrong place (so edd took over, and made a much better job of tallying the scores than this scatterbrain could! lol) however, Edd won, comprehensively. ( for Edd!)
Edd and Tracie had to leave early, so Vince and I played a two-handed game, and managed to get a couple of rounds in before "chucking out" time.
Vince trounced me, 140 to 120-something iirc, after two rounds.
PT
No, you won our two-hander; 140ish to my 80-odd. I can tell I'm not a newbie any more when the beginner's luck has definitely run out.
Vince
SpiderPete 22-02-2006, 12:32 Well it was nice to meet all the new people last night.
Must say its not a game to play after a few pints ... which I had .... but was fun to watch part of the first game ...... then Sugarnspice came and we played our own games ....
... who could drink the most ;)
... eyeing up the men ;)
But I shall be down again to understand the rules a bit more.
goldenturkey 22-02-2006, 22:18 Hi Everyone
Well after a few PM's bouncing around like stray bullets its crunch time for the next Mah Jong Meet.
It seems that everyone can make Thursday the 2nd of March, so it'll be 7-30 in the Devonshire Cat (as ususal..yawn!).
Sadly I shall be missing from the Punging, Konging and Chowing as I am mad busy the whole of next week (no gaps at all) and will be at a thankyou dinner for friends who took a battered car to central Africa for charity! Blimey.
See you next time round
CHRIS
morton39 23-02-2006, 08:56 Hi All,

If you are interested in learning to play, or have played before but are rusty, or are an experienced player - a warm welcome awaits you all at the forum mah jong meet. Our next meeting will be at the Devonshire Cat on Thursday 02 March, starting at 7.30pm. We'll have you playing within about 15 mins, and, as we seem to have established a tradition - can almost guarantee that a newbie will win! Come on down - it could be you (or maybe peter41?)!
There's free tuition, great company, and it's an enjoyable night out! Keep checking this thread for weekly announcements of our meets - as the meet night varies.
morton39 24-02-2006, 10:52 Hi,

Is there room for one more ? :)
I read the other threads about the mah jong session, and the links to the rules. I think I get it now.
Is it still going ahead tomorrow, isn't it ? How will I recognise you guys if I'm early ? Will somebody wear a carnation or a rose in their jacket's pocket ? :D I've not been to a forum meet before.

Yes, Bago, the forum mah jong meet is going ahead as advertised. We'd be delighted to see you. Following in the footsteps of Plain Talker, Edd & Tracie have now bought a set of tiles, which we intend to christen, and ptigga has some new racks as well. It's all happening!
When you go through the door, we should be seated on your left-hand side. We've reserved three tables for play. You can't fail to miss us, as we will have the tiles and racks laid out on the tables.
The competition for which newbie is going to maintain the tradition of trouncing the regulars continues to grow!
We look forward to seeing you Bago!
Pung! Qoung! Chow!

Well, I guess I'll see you guys tomorrow then. :)

redrobbo 02-03-2006, 01:46 Update: players expected tonight are ....
42fta, Bago, Doublewood, Edd, EvilDrNeil, morton39 + friend; peter41, Plain Talker, ptigga, Rickyegrant, TeaFan, Tracie, vinceb, and a late announcement .... nobikejohn (who is coming all the way from Hessle, near Hull!).
Looks like we might break the record for attendance....but which newbie will maintain the forum mah jong club tradition of beating the regulars? :hihi:
If you've never played before, or are out of practice, or are an experiecned player, everyone is welcome to the Forum Mah Jong Meet at the Devonshire Cat, Thursday 2nd March (tonight!), starting at 7.30pm. (late comers are still welcome!). No charge, free tuition and loads of fun!
SpiderPete 02-03-2006, 12:41 Oh I am looking forward to this.... just keep me off the drinks or I may end up throwing the tiles allover the place if I dont win.... etc etc
only kiddin ...... ;)
goldenturkey 02-03-2006, 18:24 Best regards to everyone there tonight and I'll see you all next week (..I hope)

Yes! I'm the first one back. :D
Thanks for a great night out. I had a good laugh. Nice meeting you all, even though I didn't have a chance to chat to everybody cos we were all so absorbed into the game.
Hopefully, I'll get "MEGA-MEGA-MEGA" points next time, quoting Redrobbo.
:hihi:
SpiderPete 02-03-2006, 23:26 Look I am 2nd back .... had a brill time, was soooo much fun, and nice to meet the new faces, and the usual ones, I shall wait for Redrobbo to come back with the scores...
... so Ms Ford whats the scores on the doors .... I wonder who won :suspect:
I went to the mah jong meet today.
The first time I have met the forummers---some of them I feel I know so well.
It seemed odd putting faces to names. Redrobbo who has given me such a lot of support and advice, nobikejohn, peter 41, chris and mai who's forum names eluded me, plaintalker, all of whom I would have passed in the street unknowing that they were the ones who peoppled my forum life.
I had a lovely time and will go again.
I acheived the unenvyable score of double 0.

It was too cold so went home. ;)
Plain Talker 03-03-2006, 13:39 I cant remember the other scores on our table, (me, doublewood, Ptigga, and Edd/ Evildrneil ) but I won, comprehensively, on 232 points, with a mahjongg of 200(!!!!!!)
In round one Doublewood won, on 44 points, despite Edd declaring mah-jong, for 40 points.
round 2 was a no-scoring round,
and round three was the round where I won on 200 points. *boasts*
again, a great night, and I thought Ptigga's mah jong racks, in black lacquer and decorated with ornate filigree dragons were absolutely gorgeous *covet, covet!!!* * green with envy!!!!* :D
PT
Well, I decided to take on a "supporting role" at our table- self, morton39, vinceb and nobikejohn.
By which I mean that my score was underneath everyone else's! :)
redrobbo 03-03-2006, 21:59 Sorry for the delay in posting. I was exhausted when I got home last night, so went straight to bed, and then it's been the council tax setting meeting at the Town Hall until nearly 7pm tonight (....never a popular decision, so I might have to stay away next week? :hihi: ).
Well, what a night to remember! Firstly, a record attendance, with 14 players, who were ...
Bago, Edd, Doublewood, 42fta, EvilDrNeil, Hazel, morton39, nobikejohn, peter41, Plain Talker, ptigga, redrobbo, Teafan, vinceb.
Next, a warm welcome to all the newbies! Glad you all enjoyed yourselves, and thanks for the PMs and posts. We hope to see you all again. It was a lovely surprise to see my forum friend Hazel, who was attending her first ever forum meet, and never let on to anyone that she was coming.
So, we had three separate games going last night, and created curious stares from many onlookers. PlainTalker has already posted the results from her table, and the results from the other two tables are as follows....
Table 2
nobikejohn = 620 points the winner! :wow: What a score!
vinceb = 188 points :clap:
morton39 = 80 points :thumbsup:
42fta = 52 points :rolleyes:
Table 3
peter41 = 124 points :clap:
TeaFan = 56 points :thumbsup:
Bago = 40 points :thumbsup:
Hazel = 36 points :thumbsup:
So, in keeping with the forum mah jong tradition, the newbies (nobikejohn and peter41) won!
But, we also had a unique score. Not only did Hazel score 0, she then managed to score double 0! I hope Hazel will not be deterred though, and will come on down to the DevCat on another occasion and show us that she can improve on her scores (but let's face it folks, you surely can't score less than double 0?).
Keep checking this thread for an announcement of the date for next weeks forum mah jong meet. As one of our founder members, Goldenturkey, couldn't make it this week, he gets to chose the date of next weeks meet. So, watch this space!
Pung!
Red

Thanks

SpiderPete 04-03-2006, 11:42 Table 3

goldenturkey 04-03-2006, 14:30 Hi everyone
Sounds like it was an amazing turn out last week and I missed a blinder. Sorry to miss TeaFan and Hazel's double-zero (she could change her forum name?):hihi:
Looking at my calendar for next week I see Tuesday is as good a night as any other, so I suggest that.
Next Mah Jong Forum 7-30pm, Tuesday 7th March at the Devonshire Cat.
With 14 turning up last week, do we need more sets brought or will people bring there new purchases (i'd like to get a look at Ptiggas racks...oeer!).
I can bring 2, John/Red 1, Plaintalker 1, Tracey/Ed 1, Ptigga 1..do we need anymore?
...shame you can't buy share in Mah Jong sets on the Sheffield Stock exchange, we'd be making a mint!

goldenturkey 07-03-2006, 23:34 Hi
On the Goldenturkey table we had mixed score of 90 and above and a rather fair score of 400 something by me!
Score to follow when find the scrap of beermat we scribbled on.
All in all a good night and Neil, Ed, Tracey and Myself had a stonking 5 games (only 11 more to go for a full game).
Thanks to all, and congrat on the house for Ed and Trace.

The set that Pete got is just *so* wrong ! >.< ! ...lol....
It was a flowering set of quadruple mega points system. Is it even possible ?
Now I can see how you can get mega mega MEGA points. :)

redrobbo 08-03-2006, 01:25 Can anyone recommend a web site where I might learn how to play? Sounds like fun.
Sorry, but I can't help. A web site? Hmm, sounds too technical for the Forum Technophobe to cope with.
I'm told that mah jong websites bear little reality to the actual game though.
No... there were a few links from another games thread a while back though. That's where I kind of brushed up on it before I went to a meet, but it is pretty easy to pick up. (Says me, who's played with diff rules before. ;) Oops.) This system is quite fun cos you can catch up and wipe the scoreboard with one game alone, so you never know who's gonna win....

Found it ! Finally.. I can go to sleep. It's been bugging me, and I thought it was on another thread, but it was on this one all along. Doh !

CHRIS 6-394-434-464-492-FINAL 494 :hihi: :hihi: :hihi:

If you fancy coming along to the Dev Cat ppn_2204, I'd be happy to teach you how to play :)
(although going by Chris' monster score last night, you might be better off learning from him :P)
I had a great night - thanks guys
Oh, Chris - You missed out evildrneil on our table - 96 points, and thats with one less game than us :o
goldenturkey 08-03-2006, 13:54 Sorry Tracie - Evildrneil
Have edited the original mail!
ooops!
CHRIS
Thank you for the website suggestions and to goldenturkey for the PM and info.
Tracie: I would, but I'm not in Sheffield. Definately if one of my visits coincides with a meet though. Thanks for the offer :) .
Plain Talker 08-03-2006, 19:21 Okay folks, after much discussion, and the issue being thrashed out at length... (chuckles) we came to the executive decision that:-
The next forum Mah jong meet is Thursday16th March, at the dev cat at 7.30pm.
the tables have been booked, usual part of the pub (the middle section where we usually sit, with the long banquette)
the scores on the pt/ doublewoood table were
first set of games:-
the score was doublewood and peter 113 each, and me (PT) well, thrapped them hollow with 314 (yes, we played a three-handed round first off)
the second set of scores from our table (when Bago joined us)
Bago 98,

Here is another site about MahJong and the scoring system
MahJong and scoring system (http://ourworld.compuserve.com/homepages/pagrosse/realmah4.htm)
redrobbo 11-03-2006, 01:24 spiderpete scored 568 points! That's 2 weeks running he's won.... despite never having played before! So where am I going wrong?
OK, as I can see that the competition is getting serious, it's time for me to pull out the stops next Thursday. I'm definitely going to try to win with -
The Calling Nine Hand or.....
The Four Happinesses or even.....
The Three Great Scholars or..... {sound of drum roll} .....
The Thirteen Unique Wonders Hand! :wow:
The newbies have been warned! :hihi:

I'll stick with a bouquet of flowers and Kongs of all three dragons (of course followed by a pung of my own wind)! I'll even let you off and have them all revealed too!
CHRIS
PaulTansley 12-03-2006, 08:31 I am interested in turning up, having played mah jong a few years back, where is this Dev Cat where you are meeting?
dave
What is mah jong....some kind of posh judo or something..
Only if you get really annoyed because someone pinches the tile you want :)
Its like a fancy version of the card game Rummy.
Oh.... and it's addictive.
goldenturkey 12-03-2006, 12:00 Hi Cycleracer
Just think about rummy, but with 144 tiles instead of 52 cards. You're trying to get the 14 tiles you have on your go into 4 'tricks' (runs of the same suit, or three of a kind in the same suit) and an identical pair, by picking up and discarding tiles.
Check out
www.mahjongmuseum.com
which has rules and lots of pictures of the tiles. If you like card games, then this is the daddy of them all!!
CHRIS:D
 Thursday the 16th should be OK for me - I have to work a little late, but I'll just come over straight from work :D
morton39 13-03-2006, 08:41 Oh dear, reading the above postings this morning and I think I'm going to cry. Why can't we play and enjoy the mistakes, or is it that I just don't have a competitive streak. Need a hug.

And mine :P In fact, last week was the first time I haven't come bottom of the table, and even then that was only because Neil joined us a game late! ;) :D
Maybe Red, morton and I should try and get a table together next week :P

Nice that folk are so supportive - thanks redrobbo.
See you all Thursday (minus the cat - can't stand cats)

goldenturkey 13-03-2006, 20:35 Looks like it's going to be a good turn out again on Thursday!

SpiderPete 15-03-2006, 17:51 Sorry cannot make this Thursday, I have PM`ed Redrobbo with the reason why, sorry guys and gals
goldenturkey 16-03-2006, 16:31 Dear all
The dreaded lurge has been going round work and I've held out this long, but it's whacked me today (they sent me home!!!!).
Can't be there tonight and I'm really annoyed (*cough*) but sick!
Sorry
CHRIS:( :( :( :( :( :( :( :( :(
What a strange evening this has been!
Morton39 and 42fta showed what disgraceful lushes they can be, starting on the old Adam's Ale * at 7pm and staying till being chucked out at 11pm.
No-one else actually managed to stay the course beyond around an hour apiece so the score card is muddled, to say the least.
First game - Teafan -10;
morton39 - 26; :suspect:
42fta - 28 :hihi:
Teafan then had to leave, to go to another pub, so we were joined by Ed and Tracie, playing as one hand, and evildrneil, who absolutely anhilated us over two games:
42fta - 10
Ed & Tracie - 16 :|
Morton39 - 50
evildrneil - 204 :wow:
Ed and Tracie subtly metamorphosed into redrobbo, who had turned up late, allegedly because of a late night last night....
At this point, redrobbo and 42fta decided to really set the table alight, jointly achieving "nul points" to morton39's 48 in the next game. :help:
Finally, redrobbo seceded his place to vinceb, also late but with a better excuse than red's :hihi: Not sure where on the sheet of paper I scrawled the scores of our first game but it became academic in the final game where 42fta trounced all comers with "thirteen unique wonders"!
Yes, you read it correctly, one each on the 1's, 9's and honours. Vinceb even took a photo in case you didn't believe it.
Next meeting Tuesday 21st. Hope to see everyone there.
* PS, Adam's Ale = Corporation Wine = Water, just in case you didn't know!
morton39 17-03-2006, 09:10 I can vouch for that, yes we are lushes, and yes what a peculiar evening we had. We even had another competetion going to find words that meant thinking beginning with 'p'.
Then a man came to take us away at 11pm. Spoilsport.
Sorry, can't make next Tuesday, have to be at work early on Wednesday and I need my beauty sleep!!:)
Morton39

erm, confession time, I've just been re-reading the rules.
Technically I didn't get the 13 unique wonders after all. Or rather, I got the 13 wonders, but hadn't got Mah Jong.
You remember I managed to discard 3 of the 9characters, 2 of the 1characters not to mention 1 each of the Red Dragon and South Wind?
(yes, staggering good luck drawing from the wall)
At the final discard, I didn't know I should have kept one of them as a pair for one of my wonders!
*sob*
I'm claiming a moral victory though, so nerr.:P
PS - did raise one question though, has the Mah Jong Steering Committee agreed a limit value?
Chow!
goldenturkey 17-03-2006, 19:52 Message From The Mah Jong Steering Commitee ("you don't wanna go that way mate").
Hi all...still crook (*cough*)
Limits are an interesting concept to reward special hands and limit scores in the millions. In normal play a limit hand would score 2000 points. Spanna2000, Red, Myself and possible Ptigga need to get together and sort out forum rules for play and scoring, now that the possey is growing!
CHRIS
Plain Talker 20-03-2006, 17:47 looking forward to tomorrow night.
Who's confirmed for tomorrow?
PT
SpiderPete 20-03-2006, 17:49 I have the man-flu so wont be there...... dont even feel like going to work, and deffo dont feel like drinkin....... or thinkin ...... must be bad :P
goldenturkey 20-03-2006, 22:30 I still don't feel great, but I will be there!!!
CHRIS
redrobbo 20-03-2006, 22:40 I've also got the man 'flu, and have cancelled all appointments for the week. Sorry, I can't make it folks.
I'm also away next week (if I've recovered from this 'flu bug). See you in April!
Pung!
Red
PT, Chris and I so far, then. Looks like another evening of three-handers. :)
I've tried to book the tables for tonight but have only got though to an answerphone so don't know if they've got the message. If anyone else if able to contact DevCat before I try again, that would be very helpful, cheers.
Plain Talker 22-03-2006, 08:09 Another excellent night:-
On our table, which ended up as a two-handed game, after EDN needed to leave, Vince got a high score of 1020!!!! (I got a creditable seven or eight hundred-and -odd) 42fta has got the score sheets, and will be posting the results presently. I do know.... *fanfare*.... that G-T got a massive, massive hand of 2,000 points + - which was amazing! lol
Can we arrange next week's meet, please?
Shall we say Tuesday again? Tues and Thurs seem to be the days that suit most of us...?
Tuesday the 28th? at 7.30? usual venue (dev cat)? If I get a couple of "ayes" for Tues 28th, I will book the tables, seeing as RR is away for a couple of weeks.
just a note about a future meet:- can I possibly ask a favour of the mah-jonggers, please, for the following week?
For the week commencing 4th April, could we hold the meet on the Thursday 6th April, please?
I will be away at a conference on the Tuesday/ Weds. and would not be able to attend otherwise. (If it's not possible, that's fine, I'm happy to go with the democratic vote, however- whatever suits the majority..)
spanna:- what are we going to do about the Sunday afternoon meets you suggested? I would still be very interested in playing at the dev cat, on a Sunday before the evening "unofficially-official" meet.
PT
goldenturkey 22-03-2006, 09:54 Hi All
A good night last night, though we did end up sat next to the table with the highest blood alcohol level every - and no volume control either!!!
ANYWAY - I got very lucky (over 2000 scored.... ) by:-
South wind is prevailing. I draw both south wind flowers and complete a Pung of South wind...South is also my own wind...and I think the hand score came to only 42 (answer to life the universe and everything?).
The 2 doubles for each flower and 2 doubles for group of own wind and wind of the round (6 doubles total).........end result...losts of points!
Vince/PT/DrNeil/42fta all were very brave and scored, though we had to wheel the super computer out to multiply a couple of scores.
Due to this growing interest in rules and scoring, would anyone who is interested in agreeing and contributing to a forum set of mah jong rules and scoring tables post or PM me.
I think a set of rules, written to be understood not translated or deciphered would be good for new members and for people wanting to gain in confidence on the Mah Jong nights!
CHRIS
Assuming that the council unions strike scuppers my woodwork class next week (and it will unless the strike is called off), I will be available on the 28th.
...and I think the hand score came to only 42 (answer to life the universe and everything?).It did indeed, you're talking my language there. Metasyntactic Variables Rule! :)
..... though we had to wheel the super computer out to multiply a couple of scores.ok, so I had trouble with my 2times2times2times2times2times2 tables, are we going to have a fight about it? ;)
Hi All
here at last with the trusty score sheet, which once again looks like a spiders' web, despite being so organised this time as to have taken a notepad.
First round, a four-hander
Goldenturkey - 2
PlainTalker - 16
42fta - 72
evildrneil - 384 :hihi:
Then we split into two x three-handers.
Table 1
Evildrneil - 20; 10; 2; 4; 32; Total = 68
PlainTalker - 10; 72; 14; 44; 36; Total = 484
Vinceb - 172; 224; 208; 32; 68; Total = 744
PT & V played another couple of hands after EDN left, scores:
PlainTalker - 14; 38; 96; grand total = 642
Vinceb - 44; 12; 208; grand total = 1020
Table 2
Ptigga - 48; 34; 68; 46; Total = 196
42fta - 206; 60; 92; 52; Total = 410
Goldenturkey - 96; 8; 2688 (limitted to 2000); 32; Total 2136
One sad note to end on - play at table 2 was delayed when two of PT's tiles mysteriously disappeared. We are hoping that the DevCat kitchen might locate them in tomorrow's curry :gag: but failing that GT is hoping to scavenge some from his contacts in the underworld. fingers crossed x
edit - oops, used a non-forum name, sorry
PS - unlikely to be able to make next Tuesday but have put April 6th in my diary.
PPSS - happy to accept whatever rules are adopted, but tempted to design a SF scoresheet, if peeps are cool with that? Will the mods let me copy the logo??
morton39 23-03-2006, 08:34 Hi All,
Looks like you had a good night, without me to liven up the proceedings too. Hmmmm.
Hopefully, should make next Tuesday evening. Got the week off work - legit - using up the remains of my annual leave, so can catch up on the beauty sleep during the day.
Morton39
Here's a putative first version of a score sheet, its got a hand score and running total line, with a small space for the workings. What does anyone think?
http://www.42fta.com/images/ScoreCard.doc
I've emailed admin to ask if using the logo is okay, hopefully they'll say yes.
PS - There are five rows shown for each round - in case the group adopts any of the rules relating to east staying put such as if (a) east goes Mah Jong or (b) no-one goes Mah Jong.
PPSS - have added a doubling table to save headaches! :)
goldenturkey 23-03-2006, 18:56 The doubling total thing would have been good on Tuesday!
CHRIS
The doubling total thing would have been good on Tuesday!

Plain Talker 28-03-2006, 09:33 sorry 42fta, yes it's confirmed, I have made the booking both tonight and next week (thurs 6th)
PT
goldenturkey 28-03-2006, 12:14 I'm there tonight too, tiles, score sheets and all!!
People fancy seeing how far we can get through the 16 rounds - a bit of speed Mah Jong????
CHRIS
P-T isn't feeling too good, and 'should' be there tonight. Would people who are going tonight confirm so I can see if I'll have 'friends' tonight, or if I'll be sat round a table like Billy-no-mates?
Best to all
I'm not working tonight after all and sis' is giving me a lift so we'll be there
Does that mean you'll have friends? ;)
Hope you're okay tonight, PT, else we'll see you next Thursday:wave:
goldenturkey 28-03-2006, 17:03 AAAAARRRRGH!
Car engine blew up on way home, so I'm trying to sort out lifts to work for tomorrow.
I'm sorry but don't count on me tonight..I know I said I was coming, but that was before the comedy exploding clown car incident!!!!...lots of smoke and oil everywhere...and that sounds expensive!!!
I will catch you all next time, if not a little later tonight.
Sorry everyone
CHRIS
goldenturkey 29-03-2006, 10:43 Hi All
Engine gasket blown out completely:gag: , so its new car time....:(
Good job its my end of term holiday from Friday onwards. Time to get round the showrooms!
As for Mah Jong - I WILL be there next meet whether next Thursday or TUesday.
CHRIS
First the inevitable, GoldenTurkey wasn't there so TeaFan was. hmmm, are you sure you aren't the same person? :hihi:
PlainTalker (courtesy of copious pharmaceuticals and tissues), TeaFan, Morton39 and 42fta comprised the small but adequate band of Mah Jong devotees in attendance last night.
The evening commenced with early suggestions of a walkover as 42fta racked up 3 Mah Jongs and 974 points straight off. Then a poxy 2 in the next round. Ah, but doesn't pride take a fall?
TeaFan decided that honour was at stake, so promptly began gathering them, the honour tiles that is, not stakes.
His hand contained an exposed major Kwong and an exposed major pung, not even Mah Jong. But there was the minor factor of all 4 flowers and 2 seasons.
Seven doubles brought a score of 44 to 5376!!!!
Just in case there was any chance of others mounting a challenge, TeaFan secured his victory with a Mah Jong with five doubles in the following hand and a (mere) 18 enhanced by four more doubles to close. Phew!
Final Scores:
Morton39 284
PlainTalker 758
42fta 1082 :|
TeaFan 7172 (or 3796 limited) :partyhat:
goldenturkey 29-03-2006, 18:33 WOW - 'nuff said
goldenturkey 02-04-2006, 21:27 Are we at the Dev Cat this Tuesday???
I've lost touch and it's gone a bit quiet...what have I done to deserve this...(*sob sob*)
CHRIS:(
Plain Talker 02-04-2006, 22:12 no, chris,
we are there on THURSDAY (the 6th April) not the Tuesday, this week
(I am away on the Tuesday, so I asked very nicely if we could alter the day to Thursday.)
PT
SpiderPete 02-04-2006, 23:18 I shall be ther on the 6th
redrobbo 02-04-2006, 23:33 Having been absent for 2 weeks now, I've been raring to get back to the mah jong meet..... until I read the fantastic scores folks have been clocking up whilst I've been away! So now I think I'll just timidly creep into a corner seat and get slaughtered by the Masters of Mah Jong! :hihi:
See you all on Thursday folks!
Pung!

P.S. I think Goldenturkey is right to suggest that a number of us get to together to agree Forum Mah Jong rules. Due to extended work commitents, Spanna2005 is unlikely to be able to join us though. Can we fix a date for a Rules Committee meeting when we get together on Thursday?
goldenturkey 02-04-2006, 23:39 Am away (at last minute request) to pay attention to Claires folks, and go to a Mozart concert on Friday, so once more I shall have to skip. Week after I shall be there.

morton39 03-04-2006, 15:21 THursday evening is fine for me too.
M.
I'll be there until about 10pm, I'm expecting a call for the parent-taxi service. :)
redrobbo 04-04-2006, 23:24 Rubydazzler is hoping to come along on Thursday night. I've told her she's got to learn to to play though, and then, in keeping with the forum mah jong newbie tradition..... thrash us all! :hihi:

I haven`t been down for a few week (no smutty comments please :P :P ) so does this make me a newbie again :P as I have forgotten how to play (liar)
I won't be there this week either (I'm being all civilised, and going the theatre like :P) but hopefully I'll be about for some more Mah Jong fun next week :D
goldenturkey 05-04-2006, 09:52 Have a ball on Thursday and I'll see you next week. Post the scores and the next meet date and I'll see you then..I can't think of any good reasons that'd get in the way.
Also we all have to assault teafans megalithic score from last week!!
CHRIS

CHRIS
In which case..... don't count on me, 'cos I'm rusty after a 2 week absence!
Although....if Spiderpete can count himself as a newbie all over again, maybe I am in with a chance of not coming in the bottom tier for once?! :hihi:
It seems Rubydazzler will only be paying a flying visit on Thursday, but has more or less promised to come along and learn how to play on another occasion. So, maybe my chances of getting a megascore are increasing all the time?!
Maybe we'd better play with scoring limits....I mean, I don't want to intimidate everyone else do I?
PS Just rung Ladbrookes - and for some reason they've quoted me odds of 500-1 of winning! :hihi: See you on Thursday folks! Pung!

Those are generous odds, have the missed a couple of 00`s off the end [50000-1] :P :D
'fraid I won't be there as I'm ill. Had I known goldenturkey wasn't going to be there, I'm sure I'd have remained fit and well...
SpiderPete 06-04-2006, 16:06 Looks like a quiet night out for MahJong, I take it is 7.30 start ....
I might pop out earlier for a few drinks to get into the spirit and do some ass whippin time again later on ....... watch them flower tiles :D
Anyone else comin down ?, its a fun night and easy to play, its like playing Scrabble and making sets with cards......... very simple
SpiderPete 07-04-2006, 11:49 well had fun last night ......... A few things stood out ..... I kept missing my turn ..... << looks to the right lol :suspect: >> .. I tried to put down a 4 tiles run 3,4,5,6 naughty me **slaps hand**
... don`t know who has the score sheets, and where was Redrobbo last night ......... :suspect: :suspect:
Welcome to another new player! Kath, a friend of PlainTalker.
Kath quickly grasped the essentials of play, but was unable to achieve the standard noobs' victory on account of having 42fta helping at first. Sadly the deficit was too entrenched to be turned around by vinceb's subsequent efforts.
We had one no-score round much to PT's frustration, who waited for a single North wind to make her sparrow's head for many rounds, unaware that its' partners were held by SpiderPete and Morton39.
Scores, in the absence of the magnificent doubling opportunities afforded by the use of flower and season tiles, after the completion of both East and South rounds:
Kath: 94
SpiderPete: 104
Morton39: 210
PlainTalker: 258
redrobbo 07-04-2006, 16:44 Sorry I missed last night SpiderPete. Not been too well during past 48 hours*
However, the next forum mah jong meet will be at the DevCat on
WEDNESDAY 12 April kicking off at 7.30pm.
*oh alright, I'll admit that I've been secretly trying to perfect the Hidden Hand from Heaven! But, (and you will need your Methodist hymn book to appreciate this pun....) no joy came down! :hihi:
Plain Talker 07-04-2006, 20:43 Yeah, my friend Kath really enjoyed last night's Mah jong, I think she'll be coming to future meets when she is able.
It was a good evening, I didn't get the final scores, (poor-scoring though the hands were, generally) so I am quite pleased to see I was the high scorer last night.
looking forward to next wednesday's game.
PT
Plain Talker 10-04-2006, 01:14 okie dokie,

See you there, all being well
PT
SpiderPete 11-04-2006, 16:27 I shall be there as usual:thumbsup:
Sorry, I won't be able to make tonight as I'm climbing instead
Please can I suggest Thursday next week (Thurs 20/4) for the next meet as I want to bring along a friend who wouldn't usually be able to make Thursdays but can make it due to it being the Easter holidays.
Ptigga
redrobbo 12-04-2006, 09:25 Sorry you can't make it tonight ptigga.
I've been in touch with Goldenturkey, and Thursday suits him best next week. It's also my preferred evening next week - but I'm unable to confirm my attendance at this stage. I'll PM everyone on the buddy mah jong list later tonight/tomorrow to confirm next weeks date.
Pung!

hiyabeing 12-04-2006, 18:52 Hi everyone
Have only just joined the thread and confused at how often you actually meet???
Also - I've never played in real life - only ever on p.c. - is it similar?
Interested in seeing what it's like some time....

Apparently, it's not remotely like playing on a computer. I'm told it's completely different, and much more fun!
Why not come on down to the Devonshire Cat on Thursday 20 April, where the regular forum mah jong meet will kick off at 7.30pm. Free tuition, no charge, and loads of enjoyment? You'll be made very welcome. If you can't make next Thursday, keep an eye on this thread for details of future meets - as the weeknight on which we hold the mah jong meets varies from week to week.
Ptigga and friend will be coming next week, plus Goldenturkey & SpiderPete. 42fta will be there, unless work interrupts! Plain Talker & Doublewood need to confirm, as do others. Apologies from Tracie, Edd and redrobbo (we're attending the forum Martinis meet) and morton39. I shall PM everyone on the mah jong buddy list, plus send an e-mail to Teafan.
I've forgotten to reserve the tables - but I'll try and remember to do that when I'm at the (unofficial) DevCat forum meet on Sunday night.
redrobbo 13-04-2006, 19:34 I nearly got a Thirteen Unique Wonders Hand last night! :wow:
In the draw, I had the 1 + 9 of each suit (except the 1 of Bamboo), plus 1 wind, and 3 Dragons (including a matching pair). On my first pickup from the wall, I had the missing 1 of Bamboo! Now I only needed 3 winds and 1 Dragon. Could I do it?
It was a 3 handed game (EvilDrNeil had just left). 42fta guessed what I was trying to do at the point Doublewood played a pung of North winds! I didn't draw any more of the missing tiles, but by now I had a concealed pung of Red Dragons and when Doublewood discarded a 9 of Characters, I declared a pung.
On my subsequent draws from the wall, I picked up 2 of the missing 3 Winds, and the sole missing Dragon! Doublewood had by now though converted his pung of North winds to a qoung - so I thought I couldn't have won anyway with a Thirteen Unique Wonders Hand even if I had persevered. However, when I got home I recalled you can rob a qoung to go mah jong! Aarrgghh! So close to winning with a Thirteen Unique Wionders Hand!
Next time..... maybe? :hihi:
SpiderPete 14-04-2006, 13:21 Where are the scores on the doors miss ford from last week.......... :suspect:
I know I won one one table ;)
Hi all, sorry to be so late with the scores, I'm not trying to hide them, honest!
Table 1
managed to have two no-score rounds, not sure if that was caused by people trying to prevent others from being able to score some huge hands?
Morton39: 32; 32; 36; 6 total 106 ;)
Kath: 18; 6; 112; 40 total 176 :)
PlainTalker: 60; 48; 38; 70 total 216
SpiderPete: 56;160;24;32 total 272
Table3
Delayed start due to lack of second mah Jong set, initially. Thumbs Up to EvilDrNeil & RedRobbo for an emergency dash to fetch one.
Doublewood *: 8; 18; 24 total 50 ;)
EvilDrNeil: 208; 20 total (2 games) 228
RedRobbo: 8; 28; 384 total 420 <<nice consolation score (384) for failing the 13unique wonders!!
42fta: 28; 148; 368 total 544
very enjoyable evening again, thanks. Highly unlikely I'll be there next week as my son has a project deadline, so I expect to be ranting over a hot printer all night!
Plain Talker 15-04-2006, 16:57 I'm afraid me and Doublewood won't be there, either, sorry, we are going to the meal-meet.
sorry,
PT
edit to add
the no-scoring rounds were really frustrating, I had a fantastic hand:- three of the flowers/ seasons, and FOUR qongs!! (yes FOUR! and Majors, too!) as well as a pung, and 2 pairs of dragons and 2 winds. "Arrgh! lol"
redrobbo 17-04-2006, 09:48 Message from Teafan - to say he can make the first hour on Thursday night. Will this be the first time that Teafan and Goldenturkey actualy see each other?
Looks like a small turnout* on Thursday, do to the clash of forum meetings on the same night (as Tracie, Edd, Plain Talker, Doublewood and myself will be attending the Martinis meet).
* Confirmed: Ptigga + friend; SpiderPete; Goldenturkey; Teafan (1st hour only).

Well it only takes 4 to play a game, and I can count 5 ;) .......
redrobbo 20-04-2006, 21:59 Sorry to have missed the mah jong meet tonight, but I joined Tracie, Edd, Plain Talker & Doublewood at the forum food meet. Hope you had an enjoyable evening. I shall look forward to seeing the scores in due course.
Due to an event taking place on 04 May, I'm unlikely to be able to attend the next two mah jong meets. I'll PM Goldenturkey with the mah jong buddy list, so he can send a round robin PM to all announcing the dates of future meets.
Pung!
Red
Plain Talker 21-04-2006, 12:09 when will the meet be next week?
mark thinks I'm suffering form withdrawal symptoms. lol

goldenturkey 21-04-2006, 22:49 Hi All
At last Teafan and myself met and proved we were different people, and could exist in the same place at the same time without the fabric of space-time breaking down.
Only a 4 person show on Thursday, Ptigga and "friend" (Rachel), Teafan and myself. Teafan played one hand and then had to leave.
The rest of us thrashed out about 6 games and called it a night.
So the final score were
Teafan (after one round) 28
Rachel 68
Goldenturkey 186
Ptigga a ridiculous 274
Regards to all and see you next week.
Anyone with a specific date PM me please and I will buddy list over the weekend, if I can figure out how to!

funkyukgal 22-04-2006, 05:38 Hiya Im very intrigued. Do you actually play with tiles or cards? and what do you play 3fan, 4fan or 5fan or basic? Im guessing you dont play for money and its all points?
Sorry for not reading through the thread but theres alot of pages and me sleepy eyes cant take that many pages!! lol
Hiya Im very intrigued. Do you actually play with tiles or cards? and what do you play 3fan, 4fan or 5fan or basic? Im guessing you dont play for money and its all points?Ooh funkyukgal, you sound like an afficionado, I don't even know what you're talking about so I suppose it must be the basic version
There are several "real" Mah Jong sets - ie tiles - shared between the group, all quite different styles and some are quite beautiful. Mine are some sort of resiny plastic, so I suppose you'd think them tacky, but they are quite tactile and attractive IMO..
PS re. playing for money, we did moot the possibility of having a money game for Christmas drinkypoos, a few weeks ago, but didn't come to any decisions, its too far off yet. :partyhat:
Plain Talker 22-04-2006, 17:36 just wondering what day the meet has been set for this week?
PT
goldenturkey 23-04-2006, 10:47 Hi All
I've been given the glorious task of buddy listing everone for dates next week.
I've spoken to 42fta and she suggests Tuesday the 25th. I can do this also.
I need to work out how to get my PM's sent to everyone on my buddy list (stumped at the moment) so if amyone can help I can get the applecart rolling!
Ciao/Chow!
CHRIS
goldenturkey 23-04-2006, 14:11 OM's sent and I'm waiting for responses for Tuesday!
If its a go would Plain Talker book a couple of tables as usual (might have more of an idea on numbers later - but it was busy on Thursday in the Cat)?
Thanks
CHRIS
redrobbo 23-04-2006, 16:27 As predicted, I can't make Tuesday 25 April, and it's even more unlikely I can make the following week.
funkyukgal - why not come along to the forum mah jong meet at the DevCat? There's no fee, free tuition, and we'll guarantee a fun night for you!
Keep an eye on this thread for details of the weekly meets.
SpiderPete 23-04-2006, 16:33 I cannot make the 25th either, as I am not in Sheffield that day
I can't make Tuesday either :(
goldenturkey 23-04-2006, 18:33 ARROOOGA ARROOOGA....DATE CHANGE WARNING!!!!!
Due to a flood of people unable to make Tuesday, we change to Thursday.
Sorry 42tfa, but you seem to be the only one who can and everyone else can't do Tuesday!! You can give me a hard stare when we do meet again!!
So
NEXT MAH JONG FORUM MEET
THURSDAY 27th
DEVONSHIRE CAT
From Half 7
CHRIS
goldenturkey 23-04-2006, 21:51 Thanks to Plaintalker, tables are booked for Thursday, so I'll see all of you who can there then!
CHRIS

I know the basics and play when i can which is very rare! Ive got a miniture set. You'll have to take yours to the meet and let me have a look :) I thought you lot were pros!!
Its fun playing with the gambling chips (that comes with the set..) or with money even if its 20p makes it abit more interesting ;) Just to see how much you won or lost at the end of it. :D
Redrobba - I think i will pop in! Where is the Dev cat? What time does it usually end? Ill probably will have to go early as ive got work.
Plain Talker 24-04-2006, 08:35 (snipped)Redrobba - I think i will pop in! Where is the Dev cat? What time does it usually end? Ill probably will have to go early as ive got work.
You'll find the Devonshire Cat here:-
http://www.devonshirecat.co.uk/content.php?categoryId=9
(there's a map of the pub's area, too so you can find it easier)
edit to add:- it usually goes on till just before closing time, it all depends on if folk have to go/ how enthralling the night's game is becoming...
PT
goldenturkey 24-04-2006, 17:28 The worry is with playing for cash is that if someone gets a maximum hand on 1p a point - thats £20?????
May be we have a £20 on the table eliminator one xmas and its goes down to one final player who gets the pot?????
But not quite yet, eh!
CHRIS
funkyukgal 24-04-2006, 21:35 hehe i wasnt thinking that advanced! More of.. the winner gets say 20p off everyone except for the player he took the tile off (to win)then he/she has to give double or if winner (tse mor - self win - wins from tile from the wall) everyone gives double.
Im not a gambler really! Hence the 20p lol :D
I shall check out the map and probably play for a round or 2 before i got to head off to work. :)
Plain Talker 27-04-2006, 22:59 well... what a night!
on our table, we had the following results...
bringing up the rear, (I.E. in last place!) it was me, PT, with a passable 384 points.
Ptigga:- in second place, with a total of 544 points
but the star of the evening was Kath (shut up! she said, jealously ! lol! ;) )
who got
a) the highest ever scoring round so far in the meet with an incredible 17, 020 points, thanks to lots of winds, dragons, flowers and seasons,
and b) what must also be the highest ever winning total of
17, 642
that's seventeen thousand six hundred-and-forty-two!!!!!!!
*thinks how much Kath would be owed if we'd played for money, and comes over all faint!*
PT
redrobbo 27-04-2006, 23:23 Kath got 17,020 points in one hand!
I used to be happy if I got a score in 3 figures! Phew - this is a phenominal score! Well done Kath
funkyukgal 28-04-2006, 06:04  ARrrggghhh i forgot all about this and i was in town at that time too :( Can someone remind me and PM me the day before the next meet please?? Cant believe i missed it grrrrr...I shall be there for the next one if i dont forget!!!
Congrats to Kath!! You'd be buying everyone a few rounds if it was ££ ;)
If you wanted to play for cash (and i think we'd have to be in the position where we get through more than 3-4 rounds in an evening), then the best way to do this is with the "counting sticks" (or poker chips would work). Pay £10 for your chips (theres a standard value i think - 2000?) when at the end, count up your chips, and receive a proportion of the pot.
i.e. Everyone puts in £10 - thats a £40 pot. Everyone starts with 2000 points. After 16 rounds we count up, and everyone gets £5 per 1000 points. If you lose all your points before the full number of rounds are played, then you get squat :P
goldenturkey 28-04-2006, 17:08 Well on the meagre scoring table we got the following when Edd was in the round with Myself and Mark
Goldenturkey 24
Doublewood 64
Edd 568
and then 42fta arrived and took over from edd
Goldenturkey 84
Doublewood 202
42fta 110
Doublewood pulling it out at the end with a sneaky mah jong!!
CHRIS
SUGGESTED NIGHT FOR NEXT MAH JONG MEET
THURSDAY 4th May
funkyukgal 28-04-2006, 17:15 Blimey Ed thats risky! Think ill stick to the 20-50p bets :hihi:
Ill be there...must remember this time!! :D
morton39 30-04-2006, 14:20 HI everyone,
Been reading the posts since my last game. Well done to Kath on her amazing scoreline.
Until I get to work on Tuesday I can't say if I'll make the Thursday night game.
Sorry, but not too sure about playing for money. Isn't gambling in a pub illegal? Plus, I'd lose loads.
M.
I wasnt seriously suggesting that we play for money, esp. in the pub. I dont think anyone is good enough to turn pro. ;) I was just suggesting how it might work - rather than a p/point method.
goldenturkey 30-04-2006, 15:19 I'm up for playing with 2000 points worth of stick and 42fta's book I just read gives the suggested value for such sticks (and I know that Edd and I have at least some if not complete sets of sticks).
Anyone for tennis?:loopy:
Chow
CHRIS
....(and I know that Edd and I have at least some if not complete sets of sticks).
A stick short of a load, hey? :hihi:
redrobbo 01-05-2006, 23:27 As I suspected, I can't make Thursday 4th of May. I've elected to be somewhere else that evening, so you can't count on my vote to play for money. :hihi:
A turn-out of eight altogether last night, so we were able to have two full tables. Everyone was on form and we once again experienced the delight that is "morton rules mah jong"!
One day everybody will play this way........ :loopy:
The scores for this table:
morton_39: 4,84,10,10 total 118 :help:
Tracie: 38, 34 (this Mah Jong looked like it was worth far more), 72, 50 total 146 :partyhat:
42fta: 4, 44, 20 (potential high hand that was spoiled by being greedy), 28, 182 total 278
PlainTalker: 88, 96, 928, 80, 40 total 1232
morton39 06-05-2006, 15:22 Gee thanks sis.
Yes fellow mah jongers, Morton39 rules are a joy to behold.
Beware, it could be dangerous though, you may split your sides laughing.
Can I help it if I'm not a natural 'games' person and forget the rules
I play to enjoy the company and have a bit of fun along the way.
If my modus operandi is a little off-beat, then that is merely part of my quirky nature.
I love me and I hope you do too.
goldenturkey 06-05-2006, 15:26 Sorry about the delay in getting the score for table two up, but here they are.....
Edd 778 .and considering he left half way through the night and still won:loopy:
Ptigga 670
Goldenturkey 616
Vinceb 206 ..who took also joined half way in along with
Plain-****er 148
So a mixed shuffling evening, but we were well into the third wind round when we packed in. Maybe on week we will get a 'complete' game in?
CHRIS
I love me and I hope you do too.:love:You know it!!
redrobbo 07-05-2006, 17:27 The election distractions are now over....so, when do we play this week? I'm seriously in need of some practise!
