Plain Talker 08-05-2006, 09:57 to echo Redrobbo, have we decided on a day for the meet, yet? PT goldenturkey 08-05-2006, 18:20 Just to remind you all that I'm trapped in work hell this week, so you're on your own, I shall have to let someone else lose for me this week! CHRIS:hihi: Plain Talker 08-05-2006, 19:56 so we still don't have a definite date then for mj? drat! PT Plain Talker 10-05-2006, 15:11 still waiting for confirmation that we are even having a M-J meet this week....? come on M-J players for goodness sake! :/ PT 42fta 10-05-2006, 17:37 Well, I replied to the circular that GT sent out saying okay for any, didn't any one else??? Given its now 18:40 on Wednesday, I guess its Thursday or none.....? goldenturkey 10-05-2006, 22:47 i got next to no replies from pm's so couldn't post a consensus! 42fta 11-05-2006, 06:37 ne'er mind, any one got a preferece for next week? morton39 11-05-2006, 07:17 Tuesday is NOT GOOD for me, otherwise any evening. 42fta 14-05-2006, 18:31 In the absence of any other suggestions - is Thursday good for interested parties? ptigga 14-05-2006, 22:53 Yup, I can make Thursday. Plain Talker 14-05-2006, 23:07 thurs is fine for me PT amoss 15-05-2006, 12:16 Hi, I am looking for some information on Mahjong, I would like to know how the game is structured in games and handes etc and how long each takes approximately. Can anyone help? goldenturkey 16-05-2006, 16:23 Well you seem to have hit on the right place. It's best to pop along and play a hand or two..three..four...as the forum crowd are very friendly and all levels of play are tolerated. Teaching you to play will take about 5 minutes and you're sorted for the evening. As for sites to look at, type mahjong museum into google and go to the top site, loads of rules and very beautiful sets to look at! CHRIS goldenturkey 16-05-2006, 16:24 Thursday may be out for me as work is still a complete bovine at the moment. I'll be there if I can, it's not as if you're going to change the venue??? CHRIS SpiderPete 16-05-2006, 16:26 I cannot do Thursdays as I am on my way back from Woking at tea time and Big Brother starts that night, and I cannot miss that. Tartempion 16-05-2006, 16:31 Hi everyone! can I come on Thursday? And can I bring a friend? We don't know how to play which might mean we get taken advantage of! But I'm willing to take the risk... Tracie 16-05-2006, 19:26 I'll be there on Thursday :D Tartempion 16-05-2006, 19:29 I'll be there on Thursday :D Hooray! I know you! Maybe you can tell me the rules...? Tracie 16-05-2006, 19:36 Hooray! I know you! Maybe you can tell me the rules...? I would be more than happy to :) I should warn you though I get the lowest score pretty much every week :P You and your friend can double up with someone else for the first few rounds and we can explain the rules then... it's so much easier to explain what you mean when you have a game going in front of you! Tartempion 16-05-2006, 19:39 Ok - thanks. See you there then! Edd 16-05-2006, 19:45 Ill be there too - quong! goldenturkey 17-05-2006, 00:35 Sounds like a possey's building so I'll try and get out to play...if only I can get rid of all this paperwork......aha......the solution is match shaped CHRIS evildrneil 17-05-2006, 06:41 I'm also gonna endevour to be there on Thursday - and I warn you all I've been practicing hard (so I'll probably lose hideously!) amoss 17-05-2006, 09:49 Hi Golden Turkey, thank you for your note, please forgive my messaging/chat skills this is the first time for me to use this type of thing. I would love to attend an event however I am live in Gloucester. I have been asked to put together a Mahjong event and I am trying to work out the basics. What is the right name for each game/hand/round etc and how long each one takes approx. For eaxample if i had a table of four players how long would it take to eastablish a winner if each player played heir four hands? I would really appreciate your feedback or help. goldenturkey 17-05-2006, 16:28 Amoss - go to your account settings and activate the receipt of personal messages (PM's) and I will chat off the forum loop about any issues you have. If I can't PM you I won't give you emails or links - as other people may not want to read about that stuff. Goldenturkey 42fta 18-05-2006, 15:06 Tables are booked, hope to see people tonight. goldenturkey 20-05-2006, 17:07 No posts about Thursday night? Any news for next week? I've got Ofsted (school inspectors) in my school next week so I may not be able to make it (again!). Please copy me in on any dates. Thanks CHRIS morton39 20-05-2006, 20:33 Well, I didn't play 'Morton Rules' this week - and I still lost. :help: Plain Talker 20-05-2006, 21:22 Tuesday or Thursday is fine for me. Kath won't be able to make it, for at least a couple of weeks... still, even if we add all our scores together, we won't be able to match anything like the phenomenal score she achieved a couple of weeks back, (NB, I've not let that one drop! I'm still withdrawing the "michael" out of her on that one ;) ) PT Tartempion 20-05-2006, 22:14 Can't make it this week but I've been practising with the rentals and am hoping to make it (and wipe the floor with all competition) next time!:hihi: Tracie 20-05-2006, 23:01 I'm tutoring on Thursday night, so that's out, but I could make it along on Tuesday :D 42fta 21-05-2006, 08:55 Tuesday is good for me too. Sorry about the delay in posting scores, but here they are: Table 1:the early birds The first round deserves special mention for achieving the grand total of 38 points between all four of us! My "high" score of 30 is the consolation prize given to a no-score Mah Jong  Morton39 : 0;24;6;8;12. Total 50 42fta: 30;0;12;16;4. Total 62 Tracie : 4;30;28;4;8. Total 72 Edd: 4;40;4;28;26. Total 102 :) Table 1: the second wave - hurrah for the newbies! Tartempion: 20;20;0. Total 40 Morton39: 6;6;36. Total 48 Namadie: 6;160;56. Total 222  Evildeneil: 84;0;144. Total 228  Table 2: early three-hander PlainTalker: 32;14. Total 46 Doublewood: 72;48. Total 120 42fta: 14;224. Total 238 :) Table 2: lovin' those flower tiles Doublewood: 10;16;72;18. Total 116 PlainTalker: 16;88;8;14. Total 126 Ptigga: 80;32;256;288. Total 656  42fta: 320;224;32;40. Total 716 :partyhat: The Sheffield Forum award for "Move of the Night" by unanimous agreement goes to Ptigga. He leapt to claim the 2 of characters so recklessly discarded by PT and laid down his chow of 2,3,4characters. There followed tense moments of perusal and consideration about the best tile to discard before eventually deciding upon.... .. .. .. ...........the 2 of characters found lurking elsewhere in his hand.  Moment of pure class. Tartempion 21-05-2006, 09:20 oooh! Tuesday I might be able to do. Might have to leave at 9.30 to get home in time for LOST tho... yeah... sad but true... goldenturkey 21-05-2006, 09:40 Tuesday bad as Ofsted im the next day..will see you all next time round. CHRIS goldenturkey 21-05-2006, 09:42 AMOSS I cannot PM you unless you fix your user profile. If you want more help you MUST ammend your account details. Goldenturkey. Plain Talker 21-05-2006, 10:19 Tuesday would suit us, shall we set it for tuesday, then? PT morton39 21-05-2006, 12:05 Tuesday and Thursday are both fine for me this week, so no preference. Will go with the flow. M. Tartempion 21-05-2006, 20:46 If it's going to be Tuesday and if I can make it, is it ok if I bring my mum and dad too? We've all got a vague understanding of the game (so i reckon we could play alone rather than doubling up) but none of us are exactly experts so we might have one or two questions and be a bit slow. Would that be ok...? Plain Talker 21-05-2006, 22:02 I've made a provisional booking for both days, so the tables will be reserved for both, when we've decided which one it is we're going for. PT Plain Talker 23-05-2006, 07:45 so, have we decided? are we going for tonight, or are we going for thursday? PT Edd 23-05-2006, 07:46 Tonight is good for me :D Don't you all leave me to play on my own! ;) Tracie 23-05-2006, 07:47 I was working on the assumption that it's tonight PT. Plain Talker 23-05-2006, 07:51 Good-oh, tracie, it was just that it seemed a bit "up in the air", that's all. PT Tracie 23-05-2006, 07:54 Well, at least we know there'll be three of us there! :D Actually I spoke to EDN yesterday and he's coming along tonight too, so that's four of us - enough for a game! :) Plain Talker 23-05-2006, 14:23 kath's able to do tonight, too, so that's five of us! :D PT Tartempion 23-05-2006, 14:25 I'm sorry - I can't make it tonight after all. I think Namadie (the French girl that was with me last week) might turn up with her boyfriend tho so look out for them. See y'all next time!:) 42fta 23-05-2006, 15:43 see you later! Plain Talker 23-05-2006, 21:27 just got back, sadly Namadie didn't arrive, (or at least we didn't see her...?) We managed a three-handed, single-round of the east wind. our(PT Kath and Doublewood) table's final scores were as follows:- Doublewood: 182 Kath 526 PT 4952  it broke down so:- first hand:- Pt:- (east wind) 320 Kath;- 416 Doublewood:- 64 in the second hand of the round, I got a "bouquet of flowers" (or was it seasons plus two other season/flower tiles, as well as quong of the east wind, which boosted the overall score for that hand to 4928   kath got 62, doublewood got 76 in the last hand, doublewood got a quong of dragons and a quong of the east wind (his own wind, too!) but it didn't do much to the scores, *boast* I still ran away with the score tonight. (even if it didn't come anywhere near Kath's amazing hand of a couple of weks ago of 17020 points!!! PT 42fta 24-05-2006, 06:19  PT, Must be one up there as one of the highest scores of the year along with Kaths'. I haven't got the scores from last night due to leaving early, sure they'll be posted soon. I got pwned. (quick reference to one of the topics of conversation ;) ) "after" p'raps that'll be the new "183rz" lol 42fta 24-05-2006, 06:21 PS - Not at work so you can take me as a yes for any night next week, no preferences so whatever suits the most. :) edit - Hallam Art Show, so can't do Wednesday. Tracie 24-05-2006, 08:07 With the A Level exams looming, I'll no doubt be tutoring at least night next week but I won't know until tomorrow which day that will be... Here are the scores from our table last night! Early game - an East Wind round (played by Tracie, Neil and Edd) Edd - 116  Neil - 56  Tracie - 48  Second game (A South wind round and half of a West wind round, played by 42fta, Tracie, Edd and Neil :)) Tracie - 130 :partyhat: Edd - 56  42fta - 48  Neil - 38  That has to be the first time I've won a round, ever! :wow: I'm really keen to have a full match (i.e. at least 16 games!) but before we can do that, I think we need to have one week where we don't play but rather, sit down together and sort out a clear set of rules. Perhaps we could do that next week, or whenever GT is free of Ofsted, etc? I'm happy to take notes and type them afterwards :) Tartempion 24-05-2006, 11:17 I've got exams at the moment which is why I can't come out to play much. But once they're over I promise I'll come again...and probably bring my parents and Namadie and her partner! :) goldenturkey 24-05-2006, 18:03 Hi All First day of ofsted is over and I didn't get visited (phew!), but there is still tommorrow to go! I am off on half term next week so I am up for anything, including the long overdue forum rules chat!! Let me know what people want to do as I'm a little narrow-focussed at present! Tara GT Tracie 27-05-2006, 16:55 How about Thursday this week again? I have to work a little late but I can come to the pub straight from work :) goldenturkey 27-05-2006, 17:34 Thursday good by me! chris 42fta 28-05-2006, 10:38 same here :) Plain Talker 28-05-2006, 11:51 tues, weds or thurs is ok by me, Kath would prefer thurs... PT TeaFan 28-05-2006, 11:56 Tues or Thurs this coming week ok for me. goldenturkey 28-05-2006, 22:53 Tuesday bad! Thursday Good! morton39 29-05-2006, 18:34 Here's hoping I've recovered sufficiently to come down on Thursday. Certainly feeling much better than I did last week. M. redrobbo 29-05-2006, 20:30 Subject to my recovering from a prolonged bout of pharangitis, I'll be there on Thursday too! I'm raring to play (and no doubt lose) again! :hihi: goldenturkey 30-05-2006, 05:10 Oops! Change of plan....Nearly forgot Mothers Birthday. Thursday now bad! See you next time round. Chow. Plain Talker 01-06-2006, 17:00 Glad to hear the regulars are doing better. I'll see you there, but I might be a bit late, as I'm visiting the high-scoring Kath, in hospital. PT evildrneil 01-06-2006, 17:05 I'm not gonna be around tonight so someone else is gonna have to keep Tracie of the bottom rung ;) redrobbo 01-06-2006, 17:15 Subject to my recovering from a prolonged bout of pharangitis, I'll be there on Thursday too! I'm raring to play (and no doubt lose) again! :hihi: My optimism proved short-lived. It's another early bed for me tonight until I'm properly better.... and no longer infectious! :gag: vinceb 02-06-2006, 16:04 Well, on the second table tonight there was a two-hander between PlainTalker and myself, where I scored 856 but came nowhere near PT's 4478. In one of the rounds I had a bouquet which, between the point values and the doubles, contributed most of my match score by itself. But PT got an even better combination in the very first round: She was east wind, the round was east wind, so she happily collected all four east wind tiles, and the matching season and flower to go with them - which took her score into the stratosphere straight away. See you all next week! Vince morton39 05-06-2006, 09:18 just wondering if there's a meet this week?? goldenturkey 05-06-2006, 19:36 I can make Thrusday this week. If others can that's great by me! CHRIS redrobbo 06-06-2006, 00:34 I'm attending a public meeting in Gleadless on Thursday. Tracie 06-06-2006, 12:00 I'm tutoring on Thursday, but I could come up to the Cat afterwards :) redeak 07-06-2006, 11:15  Hi, Chris, hope you remember me, ptigga's girlfriend  Rachel. I can't come this week or next but after my exams I can come almost every week I think and it will be nice to see you again. I could also bring my set and christen it! Plain Talker 08-06-2006, 15:56 looking forward to tonight. Are the tables booked? Redeak, love your PQOTD Quotes. my favourite PQOTD quote? "You know what I don't like about your face? Both of them!" lol lol :hihi: sorry, back on topic! PT morton39 08-06-2006, 20:42 Well, I checked the forum site from work at 4.30pm and there was no confirmation of a meet so I came straight home after the gym. There was a message from 42fta on my home answerphone (!!) to say she'll meet me in the Dev.Cat. Too late, I told it, I'm home now and not going back into town. So sorry folks if there was a meet and I missed it. See you in a couple of weeks. redrobbo 09-06-2006, 17:30 I've been away too long...... what's happening to the mah jong meets? Is there one for next week? Don't forget the mah jong meet on Thu 22 June - when the Lord Mayor (Cllr Jackie Drayton) is coming along to learn how to play. I saw Jackie today. She says she will be wearing her chain of office, and will bring a camera along - and hopefully get a photo and press statement in The Star. Don't forget to bring your own cameras. Meanwhile, is there a meet next week folks? I need some practice! 42fta 09-06-2006, 17:35 There was a message from 42fta on my home answerphone (!!) to say she'll meet me in the Dev.Cat. There was one on your mobile phone too  Well, Plain Talker and I had an evening of splendid isolation and got through several two-handed rounds. We got to chat to a surprising number of guys who were in the pub, amazing how much interest there is in Mah Jong, isn't it? PT: 20; 160; 92; 1536. total = 1708 42FTA: 248; 184; 48; 4000 (*). total = 4480 (*)I mis-called a 13 unique wonders, but the rules allow continuation if the other player(s) haven't disclosed their hands. A few rounds later, PT dropped the missing white dragon which I scooped up gratefully. Overall, I think an honourable draw should be called. Plain Talker 09-06-2006, 23:29 I vote for Thursday again. How are folk fixed? PT morton39 10-06-2006, 07:21 Can't make the next two weeks. See you end June. 42fta 10-06-2006, 08:40 I vote for Thursday again. How are folk fixed? PTWould prefer Wednesday as there is somewhere else I ought to be on Thursday (if I can stir myself to go, oops), but happy to go with the consensus, as always. Thursday 22nd is fixed in my diary already! I am slightly concerned that because the existing regulars are most able to commit to Thursdays, it is perhaps hard for others/newcomers to break in with an alternative evening. Has anyone any ideas on how we could get around this? Do people think that the evening should be fixed so that there is no need to try to organise a consensus each time and we could place a block booking with the Dev Cat? How about a regular alternation between a couple of the most popular nights? Lots of questions, feels like a "herding cats" situation. :hihi: Plain Talker 10-06-2006, 09:38 Would prefer Wednesday as there is somewhere else I ought to be on Thursday (if I can stir myself to go, oops), but happy to go with the consensus, as always. How about a regular alternation between a couple of the most popular nights? Lots of questions, feels like a "herding cats" situation. :hihi: I don't mind having it as a "moveable feast", as I can make most Tuesdays, Wednesdays or Thursdays, (at least 'til the football season begins again! lol) but I suppose it is easier for most folk if we have a fixed, specific day, so we can "set" it in our minds:- "Ooh, its XXXday, so it's Mah-jongg day..." rather than thinking "is it Tuesday, Wednesday or Thursday, we're supposed to be playing this week?" and get into the habit of a regular evening. (would pro'lly make it easier for the dev cat, too, if we are keeping it as the venue, so they have the convenience of having the block booking / reservation of tables) I am pulled on the matter, thopugh, as I don't want folks who'd like to come to M-J, to be disbarred because it's a night they can't make it. AAArrrgggghhh! *tears hair* we need a majority vote, to make a decision, don't we? can folk contribute as to which the best day would suit them, and/or whether they'd prefer it to be a "moveable feast"? thanks PT redrobbo 11-06-2006, 08:08 I think there is merit in having a fixed night - though, due to ad hoc meetings I have to attend, I may have periodic difficulty in attending whichever night it is. How about if we had a poll on which is the most suitable fixed night of the week? Let's talk about the arrangements at the next mah jong meet. In the meanwhile.... are we playing on Wed or Thu this week? I'm available on both dates. Plain Talker 13-06-2006, 08:40 no votes yet on wed or thur? thurs is perhaps a bit better for me this week. what do others think? PT TeaFan 13-06-2006, 13:59 Just to say, sorry I haven't been for a while, been a tad busy with this and that. I will come again as soon as poss. goldenturkey 13-06-2006, 19:39 Hi All Sorry I've been a bit lax of recent. Must try harder. In the Big Vote, I must again state that Tuesdays and Thursdays are my only options, so put that into the pot! CHRIS Plain Talker 15-06-2006, 10:26 so, anyone planning to turn up tonight? PT Meaks 15-06-2006, 10:32 I might be in the area later, and although I won't be joining you for Mah Jong I might pop in and say hi over a pint! :) redrobbo 15-06-2006, 17:11 so, anyone planning to turn up tonight? PT Me! Just checking the thread now to see who's coming along. Looks like it could be a two hander with just Plain Talker and redrobbo! Plain Talker 15-06-2006, 17:24 Me! Just checking the thread now to see who's coming along. Looks like it could be a two hander with just Plain Talker and redrobbo! Okay, see you there PT redrobbo 15-06-2006, 22:39 Small attendance this evening - could have been something to do with a football match? Just Plain Talker and myself for a two-hander. The scores..... After 4 rounds of the East wind, just 26 points separated the contenders! redrobbo = 2,320 points Plain Talker = 2,296 points After a further 2 rounds of the South wind.... redrobbo = 4,336 points Plain Talker = 2,660 points. Next week the mah jong meet will be at the Devonshire Cat, on Thursday 22 June, kicking off from 7.30pm. New players always welcome, whether you are experienced or have never played before. Bring your cameras.....as the Lord Mayor, Cllr Jackie Drayton, will be paying an official mayoral visit to the forum mah jong meet. PS But in keeping with the forum mah jong tradition, as a newbie she'll probably win! PPS GoldenTurkey has suggested that maybe I should lose next week, as beating the Lord Mayor may not be good career move! :hihi: 42fta 17-06-2006, 14:35 In the Big Vote, I must again state that Tuesdays and Thursdays are my only options, so put that into the pot!If we are going to have a single regular night, could I put in a plea for Tuesday in preference to Thursday? SpiderPete 17-06-2006, 16:01 Sorry I have been missing the last few, I haven`t lost interest but I haven``t been in Sheffield, and won`t be either next week. So in July I shall get back to coming down, I promise, you cannot get rid of me that easily. Plain Talker 17-06-2006, 16:25 that's nice to hear, peter. Look forward to seeing you there! PT goldenturkey 18-06-2006, 10:13 School is STILL manic, but I should make the effort to get there on Thursday. Tuesday would be a good semi-permenant day for me! CHRIS Plain Talker 21-06-2006, 12:51 looking forward to Thursday! It was a very enjoyable game, last week, between me and Redrobbo. PT 42fta 22-06-2006, 07:51 Sorry guys, I won't be there tonight, suddenly stricke down with icky cough. bleurgh. :( Tracie 22-06-2006, 11:06 I'll be there tonight folks, but I *may* be a little late - I'm tutoring until about seven and then I need to get across town. I will be there though! :D Hope you feel better soon 42fta :( redrobbo 22-06-2006, 16:24 Sorry guys, I won't be there tonight, suddenly stricke down with icky cough. bleurgh. :( Feeling poorly with a cough. :gag: Sorry you'll miss teaching the Lord Mayor how to play mah jong. Get well soon 42fta. goldenturkey 22-06-2006, 17:09 I really don't beleive this!!!!! Just got a wad of reports to write for tommorrow because the head of year FORGOT to tell me about them at the beginning of the week. MAY (?) be there later! Take photos please CHRIS:mad:     redrobbo 22-06-2006, 21:32 A good turnout tonight plus the Lord Mayor of Sheffield, Cllr Jackie Drayton paid an official mayoral visit to the Sheffield Forum mah jong meet - in order to learn how to play the game. All heads turned when the official mayoral limo pulled up outside the DevCat, and into the pub stepped Jackie in a striking red Chinese tunic with matching red shoes - and wearing the most impressive looking and enormous chain of office around her neck. :wow: So, to the scores....... Table I After about 4 rounds of the East wind and maybe 1 or maybe 2 of the South Wind (they simply lost count!) .... Doublewood = 144 points Kath = 212 points Bago = 408 points Plain Talker = 448 points Table 2 After 4 rounds of the East wind, including an unusual initial no-scoring round.. Tracie = 22 points ptigga = 26 points The Lord Mayor = 108 points Edd = 124 points The Lord Mayor was ably assisted at various tmes by Tracie, EvilDrNeil and redrobbo (which may account for her narrow second placing?), and the forum tradition of the newbie winning was finally broken! Our thanks to the Lord Mayor for making our evening particularly enjoyable, and a memorable occasion for Sheffield Forum.   PS Goldenturrkey - sorry, but no-one remembered to bring a camera! PPS I'm away next week, so Plain Talker will arrange the meet date. It is being mooted that we should alternate on Tuesday and Thursday. Bago 22-06-2006, 21:38 Yes, thanks Redrobbo for letting me know of the major celeb spotting event. :D It's been a fun game. I'm sorry I was a little bit late, and didn't introduce myself to everyone. The game on our table was so intense, what with the tile counting, and the calculations of mega-mega points. It *is* more fun with the flower tiles. He he he. I shook the Mayor's hand. *skip* *skip* I'm gonna brag to my family now. Ho Ho. 42fta 23-06-2006, 06:55 Thanks for the well-wishes, sorry I missed it, sounds like a good night. Still feeling grotty, I'm managing about 5 steps between hacking attacks. Edd 23-06-2006, 07:44 Cracking evening. Never seen so much gold on display :wow: (And probably never will until we can get Mr-T along for a game! :P ) Thanks to the Lord Mayor for coming along - ill let her win next time ;) Tracie 23-06-2006, 07:53 Thanks to the Lord Mayor for coming along - ill let her win next time ;) She can probably have you extradited to Leeds for not letting her win this time ;) :P I had a great night :) Thanks to Jackie - the Lord Mayor - for coming along and to Redrobbo for organising it! Plain Talker 24-06-2006, 09:52 yes, it was a great night, (if a little too noisy, as the pub was so crowded.) Doublewood called for Pungs and Quongs on a number of occasions, and the noise level was so high, he could not be heard. I do like the Dev Cat, and it's been lovely that they have welcomed us, reserving the tables for us, and what-not, each week, but I have been thinking, these last few weeks, I'd really like to play M-J in a quiet place, with maybe a room set aside for us. It was lovely to see the Lord Mayor, with her regalia. I hope she will be able to come again, whether in or out of her official capacity. PT Plain Talker 26-06-2006, 18:17 okay, so, I'm arranging a booking for Tuesday this week, 27th June. usual venue hope to see you there PT SpiderPete 26-06-2006, 18:19 okay, so, I'm arranging a booking for Tuesday this week, 27th June. usual venue hope to see you there PT aaarghhh 1 day before payday, unfortunately that counts me out, but will be back next week. 42fta 27-06-2006, 04:21 I'm still rather under the weather so I'm not going to spread my germs whatever night it is this week. See you next week, hopefully :) ptigga 27-06-2006, 08:08 I can't make Tuesday this week. I can make Tuesday next week, but not Thursday. If there's a lack of interest for this Tuesday then I can make Thursday this week as well. but that would scupper the alternate nights idea. Rachel's finished her exams now so she'll be coming along with me as well. I have another idea. How about meeting 2 nights a week with whoever can make it? Sorry to be a pain in the arse Plain Talker 27-06-2006, 16:09 so is it only me, then? shall I cancel, folks? if no-one gets back to me by half past six, to confirm, I shall cancel. PT Plain Talker 27-06-2006, 17:46 ok, cancelled. PatzB 27-06-2006, 18:13 I haven’t been before and can’t make this week but would love to come soon Have played before but it’s a long time ago and I wasn’t very good!!! :( Px ptigga 27-06-2006, 19:14 Who can make Thursday this week? I can vouch for myself and Rachel. Anyone else? SpiderPete 27-06-2006, 19:18 I am working late this Thursday, so thats me out. goldenturkey 27-06-2006, 21:14 Once again thursday is out due to work commitments, as is next thursday. CHRIS:( :( :( Plain Talker 28-06-2006, 23:49 ok I'll come along tomorrrow (thurs) as will doublewood, all going well. Kath might be able to make it, tomorrow, too, depends how she feels. tues next week is out for a few of us, I'm afraid, as redrobbo, me, and (i think) edd will be going to a meal-meet, as will tracie.(if i have it right) PT redrobbo 01-07-2006, 11:12 I'm back from a week away in err..... Hull! I'm proposing we meet at the Dev Cat on Thursday 06 July from 19.30hrs. onwards. OK folks - who's joining me? Count me in  Plain Talker 01-07-2006, 17:15 hope you had a nice time in 'ull? :hihi: I've booked the dev cat, usual tables, for Thurs 06 July, and for the following Tuesday (seeing as we said we'd be alternating it between Tues and Thurs) which will be the 11th July PT 42fta 01-07-2006, 19:29 At the moment, I'm free for both of those, PT. :) goldenturkey 02-07-2006, 14:02 coming back from the National Space Centre that afternoon, evening. If I did it would be later on. chris redrobbo 02-07-2006, 16:42 I've been away this last week, and have returned to find this e-mail from the Lord Mayor, Cllr Jackie Drayton...... "Many thanks for a great night I really enjoyed myself. Please pass my thanks to the group for their kindness and tolerance and for making me feel so welcome All good wishes Jackie" morton39 03-07-2006, 15:54 Thursday evening, hmmm, I have two choices. If its fine I shall be going on a Peak District Ranger staff meeting starting at the Barrell in Bretton. Otherwise I'll be there. M. Plain Talker 04-07-2006, 11:52 Sorry, forgot to post the scores from last week's game  Whoops! My bad! Here they are:- We played a round of the East wind, and the results were PT:- 186  Doublewood:- 172 :D Ptigga:- 68 :) and Rachel:- 44 :( PT SpiderPete 06-07-2006, 10:25 So is anyone else going besides me and Plain Talker Plain Talker 06-07-2006, 15:34 yeah Doublewood and Kath will be there, Pete... PT SpiderPete 07-07-2006, 10:57 Well had a good time last night, Dev Cat is a bit noisy on a Thursday, can hardly think, but not one to complain, and I "just" won :| Plain Talker 07-07-2006, 17:15 thanks for that, Peter, here are the scores from last night:- It was very noisy, and a bit hard to concentrate easily, so we only played one round of the east wind... Spiderpete:- 210  kath :- 200:D PT:- 152 :) Doublewood 78 :| I have sent a PM to the people who atted the Mah jong meets, suggesting a more peaceful venue, where we could hear ourselves think! (LOL) I am awaiting more results so we can be democratic about whether we should move or not. PT redrobbo 10-07-2006, 22:19 .....I have sent a PM to the people who atted the Mah jong meets, suggesting a more peaceful venue, where we could hear ourselves think! (LOL) I am awaiting more results so we can be democratic about whether we should move or not. PT Any news of the venue? I've voted! SpiderPete 10-07-2006, 22:22 Any news of the venue? I've voted! Where are the venues to vote on :suspect: :suspect: Plain Talker 10-07-2006, 22:37 I pm-ed everyone I could, peter. it threw yours and another person's pm back at me. sorry! there is an alternative (quieter) pub, with space for us, the Devonshire ARMS on Ecclesall Road, so far the responders who have replied have mostly been agreeable. Most attendees at the Dev cat have been finding it too noisy and crowded to concentrate properly. maybe after next week's meet, we can start using the new venue, if the concensus is for a change. PT 42fta 13-07-2006, 07:57 Another pleasant evening was had by all on Tuesday, I think. We were joined by a non-forum member, Michael, who happened to be in the Dev Cat at the time. He's studying here and misses playing Mah Jong, PT spotted him looking longingly at the game pieces. WELCOME MICHAEL  We had much fun as Michael tried to teach us some traditional terms. The "circles" are henceforth known as "Bing", though morton39 will do her best to confuse us with biscuits, oreos and giant cookies. :hihi: The characters are 10,000s. I'm not going to admit to how much difficulty I had in converting "7 characters" to "seventy thousand".... Red dragon is "centro" and green is "fortune" (fat). the scores: PlainTalker: 6,4,20,26. total 56 42fta: 16,6,42,80. total 144 Michael: 28,192,8,4. total 232  morton39: 480,10,14,80. total 584. redrobbo 13-07-2006, 08:08 I'm losing the plot over when we are meeting, and where we are meeting. Any decision on next week? How come the newbie Michael didn't win? :hihi: 42fta 13-07-2006, 08:34 Hi Red I think PT was keen to keep the alternating system going, so I assume it will be Thursday next week, at the Dev Cat. I definitely can't make either night next week and can't really commit to anything until September, but will pop along as often as possible. see you soon. xx Plain Talker 13-07-2006, 08:44 I'm losing the plot over when we are meeting, and where we are meeting. Any decision on next week? How come the newbie Michael didn't win? :hihi: I suggest that we have one last meet in the cat, (next thursday, 19th) before transferring over to the Devonshire ARMS the week after (Tuesday 24th?) is that okay? the concensus has been very much in the majority for a move. It was nice to meet Michael, and he obviously enjoyed joining in with us, which I'm really glad about. I'm not sure, at all, why he didn't win, being the "newbie". Anyway, we do hope that michael can make it to future games; he'll be most welcome. As 42fta says, it was so interesting learning other terms for the playing pieces, so now, we can confidently put down the three of circles, (or is that biscuits! :hhihi:) and declare "pung-bing!! which means "three of Bing" (circlces/ biscuits) or the four of circles and declare "quong-bing"- four of biscuits! lol. We now know that the red dragon is "centre" and the green dragon is "fortune" Michael explained to us that the character pictogram at the bottom of the "character" tiles was the pictogram for ten thousand. so the game was educational as well as entertaining. :D PT SpiderPete 13-07-2006, 11:39 I'm losing the plot over when we are meeting, and where we are meeting. Any decision on next week? How come the newbie Michael didn't win? :hihi: Confused me as well, here I was sat twidling my fingers on what to do, so its Dev Cat next Thursday then, I mght have a treck down. redrobbo 19-07-2006, 06:33 I suggest that we have one last meet in the cat, (next thursday, 19th) before transferring over to the Devonshire ARMS the week after (Tuesday 24th?) is that okay? the concensus has been very much in the majority for a move. PT Sorry, but I can't make the last night at the DevCat on Thursday the 20th of July. No can I make the first night at the Devonshire Arms the following Tuesday. 42fta 23-07-2006, 08:52 Is it a definite for the Devonshire Arms on Tuesday? The conservatory is close to the bar but quietly secluded and the other patrons made us feel very welcome. Hope to see everyone there next Thursday 3rd. :) Plain Talker 25-07-2006, 22:46 As kind as the Cat has been to us hosting the meet, I agree, it was really nice to be able to hear oneself think, the atmosphere at the Devonshire Arms was quiet, welcoming, friendly, the game(s) were great, we really had a great time. I shall post the scores from tonight's games, tomorrow, when I am not so tired, ( we managed one short hand, a "wind of the east " with doublewood, PT, 42fta and Morton 39, and then had a full set of "wind of the east" and one hand of the south wind with DW, PT and Goldenturkey) it was a really nice night. PT goldenturkey 26-07-2006, 15:56 Hi to all Much enjoyed last night at the Devonshire Arms. Musty quieter and a pubby feel rather than a town/wine bar/student haunt. I want to play games not 'hang' with the young and trendy. Once more I got pasted (scores to come) and it was nice to get the tiles out after a VERY long 'resting' period. Thanks to all! Morton really cleaned up with a bouquet of flowers early on - which automatically gives x8 on the existing score?! :wow:  Now then... we've been saying this for a while now, but - assuming that most people can make next Thursday - I think it'd be good to sit down and sort out allowed special hands / basic rules for SF Mah Jong. I'm happy to take notes and distribute the results! Any takers? :D SpiderPete 09-08-2006, 11:09 Sorry guys, I had every intention of making it, popped into Dempseys for a couple and got more than I bargained for, so stayed there all night. Plain Talker 18-08-2006, 11:10 well, where was everyone? there was just me and Kath, so we had three east wind rounds, (well, four, cos the first was a no-scoring hand, as we got to the end of the wall without being able to call mah-jongg. we were each holding the tiles the other wanted... lol ah-well!!) the last two hands were over, amazingly fast. Will the Mah Jong nights come back in 2007 ? SafetyPin 24-01-2007, 14:28 Just found this thread. Had no idea there were so many mah jong-ers in Sheffield. I've not played in years (my grandad taught me how when I was even smaller than I am now but I've mostly forgotten). My mah jong set is hiding under my bed gathering dust at the moment. Are new mah-jongers welcommed or would I be giggled at and poked with a stick? Plain Talker 24-01-2007, 17:34 Well this thread has been quiet of late. Will the Mah Jong nights come back in 2007 ? I'm definitely hoping that they will re-appear. I really enjoy playing Mah-Jong. I wonder if the rotten weather and dark nights conspired to put folks off? the turnouts (well turnout , singular seeing as it was only me attending!!!) were disappointing. I hope folk will get themselves into gear, and that we can get the ball rolling (sparrows twittering?) again soon. morton39 05-02-2007, 15:52 Hi everyone, I'm back in the land of the living although not sure when I will be returning to work (got a couple of 'problems') and back in the Mah jong groove. Hope to be back at work by the end of Feb/early March. Will post on this forum and we can take up the Mah Jong baton once again? Where? Devonshire Arms or Cat? GO. never played it, would you like to bring it along and we can have a go? M39 Aposter 27-05-2007, 18:57 Got given (or rather my girlfriend did) a mahjong set recently, and decided to try and learn the game.
