Well you seem to have hit on the right place. It's best to pop along and play a hand or two..three..four...as the forum crowd are very friendly and all levels of play are tolerated.

Teaching you to play will take about 5 minutes and you're sorted for the evening.

As for sites to look at, type mahjong museum into google and go to the top site, loads of rules and very beautiful sets to look at!

I would love to attend an event however I am live in Gloucester. I have been asked to put together a Mahjong event and I am trying to work out the basics. What is the right name for each game/hand/round etc and how long each one takes approx. For eaxample if i had a table of four players how long would it take to eastablish a winner if each player played heir four hands? I would really appreciate your feedback or help.

We managed a three-handed, single-round of the east wind.

our(PT Kath and Doublewood) table's final scores were as follows:-

in the second hand of the round, I got a "bouquet of flowers" (or was it seasons plus two other season/flower tiles, as well as quong of the east wind, which boosted the overall score for that hand to 4928 :clap: :clap:

in the last hand, doublewood got a quong of dragons and a quong of the east wind (his own wind, too!) but it didn't do much to the scores, *boast* I still ran away with the score tonight. (even if it didn't come anywhere near Kath's amazing hand of a couple of weks ago of 17020 points!!!

My optimism proved short-lived. It's another early bed for me tonight until I'm properly better.... and no longer infectious! :gag:

Well, on the second table tonight there was a two-hander between PlainTalker and myself, where I scored 856 but came nowhere near PT's 4478. In one of the rounds I had a bouquet which, between the point values and the doubles, contributed most of my match score by itself. But PT got an even better combination in the very first round: She was east wind, the round was east wind, so she happily collected all four east wind tiles, and the matching season and flower to go with them - which took her score into the stratosphere straight away.

Don't forget the mah jong meet on Thu 22 June - when the Lord Mayor (Cllr Jackie Drayton) is coming along to learn how to play. I saw Jackie today. She says she will be wearing her chain of office, and will bring a camera along - and hopefully get a photo and press statement in The Star.

Don't forget to bring your own cameras.

Well, Plain Talker and I had an evening of splendid isolation and got through several two-handed rounds. We got to chat to a surprising number of guys who were in the pub, amazing how much interest there is in Mah Jong, isn't it? :cool:

I don't mind having it as a "moveable feast", as I can make most Tuesdays, Wednesdays or Thursdays, (at least 'til the football season begins again! lol) but I suppose it is easier for most folk if we have a fixed, specific day, so we can "set" it in our minds:-

"Ooh, its XXXday, so it's Mah-jongg day..." rather than thinking

"is it Tuesday, Wednesday or Thursday, we're supposed to be playing this week?"

and get into the habit of a regular evening. (would pro'lly make it easier for the dev cat, too, if we are keeping it as the venue, so they have the convenience of having the block booking / reservation of tables)

I am pulled on the matter, thopugh, as I don't want folks who'd like to come to M-J, to be disbarred because it's a night they can't make it.

I think there is merit in having a fixed night - though, due to ad hoc meetings I have to attend, I may have periodic difficulty in attending whichever night it is.

A good turnout tonight plus the Lord Mayor of Sheffield, Cllr Jackie Drayton paid an official mayoral visit to the Sheffield Forum mah jong meet - in order to learn how to play the game. :clap:

All heads turned when the official mayoral limo pulled up outside the DevCat, and into the pub stepped Jackie in a striking red Chinese tunic with matching red shoes - and wearing the most impressive looking and enormous chain of office around her neck. :wow:

there is an alternative (quieter) pub, with space for us, the Devonshire ARMS on Ecclesall Road, so far the responders who have replied have mostly been agreeable.

Most attendees at the Dev cat have been finding it too noisy and crowded to concentrate properly.

maybe after next week's meet, we can start using the new venue, if the concensus is for a change.

Another pleasant evening was had by all on Tuesday, I think.

We were joined by a non-forum member, Michael, who happened to be in the Dev Cat at the time. He's studying here and misses playing Mah Jong, PT spotted him looking longingly at the game pieces.

We had much fun as Michael tried to teach us some traditional terms.
The "circles" are henceforth known as "Bing", though morton39 will do her best to confuse us with biscuits, oreos and giant cookies. :hihi:
The characters are 10,000s. I'm not going to admit to how much difficulty I had in converting "7 characters" to "seventy thousand"....
Red dragon is "centro" and green is "fortune" (fat).

I think PT was keen to keep the alternating system going, so I assume it will be Thursday next week, at the Dev Cat.

I definitely can't make either night next week and can't really commit to anything until September, but will pop along as often as possible. see you soon.

I suggest that we have one last meet in the cat, (next thursday, 19th) before transferring over to the Devonshire ARMS the week after (Tuesday 24th?) is that okay? the concensus has been very much in the majority for a move.

It was nice to meet Michael, and he obviously enjoyed joining in with us, which I'm really glad about. I'm not sure, at all, why he didn't win, being the "newbie". Anyway, we do hope that michael can make it to future games; he'll be most welcome.

As 42fta says, it was so interesting learning other terms for the playing pieces, so now, we can confidently put down the three of circles, (or is that biscuits! :hhihi:) and declare "pung-bing!! which means "three of Bing" (circlces/ biscuits) or the four of circles and declare "quong-bing"- four of biscuits! lol. We now know that the red dragon is "centre" and the green dragon is "fortune" :clap:

Michael explained to us that the character pictogram at the bottom of the "character" tiles was the pictogram for ten thousand. so the game was educational as well as entertaining. :D

I've just got back and would like to say I was pleasantly surprised by the new venue, the Devonshire Arms, I wasn't exactly the staunchest supporter of the proposed move!
The conservatory is close to the bar but quietly secluded and the other patrons made us feel very welcome.

As kind as the Cat has been to us hosting the meet, I agree, it was really nice to be able to hear oneself think, the atmosphere at the Devonshire Arms was quiet, welcoming, friendly, the game(s) were great, we really had a great time.

I shall post the scores from tonight's games, tomorrow, when I am not so tired, ( we managed one short hand, a "wind of the east " with doublewood, PT, 42fta and Morton 39, and then had a full set of "wind of the east" and one hand of the south wind with DW, PT and Goldenturkey)

Much enjoyed last night at the Devonshire Arms. Musty quieter and a pubby feel rather than a town/wine bar/student haunt.

I want to play games not 'hang' with the young and trendy.

Once more I got pasted (scores to come) and it was nice to get the tiles out after a VERY long 'resting' period.

I planned to but a friend has had a mild (thankfully) heart attack so I was in the northen general.

Yoga (I was asked) is most nights above the Bounty furniture store at the Abbeydale end of London Road.

Also I have 42fta Mah Yong book to return, but can not find any sign of the one I had, so I must assume she still has it. COuld you look please?

Just to let you know that the Devonshire Arms doesn't do food in the evenings. After the gym I've started going to Caffe Nero for a coffee and sandwich - ok then, ciabatta. They close at 7.

I will be down this Tuesday, do you play in the pub part or somewhere esle ? eg - a room.

there was just me and Kath, so we had three east wind rounds, (well, four, cos the first was a no-scoring hand, as we got to the end of the wall without being able to call mah-jongg. we were each holding the tiles the other wanted... :rolleyes: lol ah-well!!)

the last two hands were over, amazingly fast. I called MJ on both, the first was called in fourteen tiles laid down, the second in twenty!!

Just found this thread. Had no idea there were so many mah jong-ers in Sheffield. I've not played in years (my grandad taught me how when I was even smaller than I am now but I've mostly forgotten). My mah jong set is hiding under my bed gathering dust at the moment.

Are new mah-jongers welcommed or would I be giggled at and poked with a stick?

I'm back in the land of the living although not sure when I will be returning to work (got a couple of 'problems') and back in the Mah jong groove. Safetypin need not worry, I am usually the butt of everyone's jokes. I play to my own rules which causes great amusement.

Got given (or rather my girlfriend did) a mahjong set recently, and decided to try and learn the game. Been playing on the internet, but that doesn't entirely sit right with me.
