View Full Version : Stitch n' bitch
beamarshall 23-01-2006, 21:36 I'm looking to set up a stitch n' bitch group in the city somewhere (preferably central). stitch n' bitch is a worldwide phenomenon! it's a place to knit and crochet - make friends, share knowledge and have permission to be passionate about your latest creation! for more infor have a look at http://www.stitchnbitch.co.uk/
If anyone is interested let me know.
I'm waiting to find a non-smoking public venue before I can get it going.
susiepoosie 23-01-2006, 21:41 Ooh, how wierd, have just been scouring net to try to find a group like this!! Am def interested, count me in
Bought the Stitch n bitch book the other week, have made 2 scarves and am now attempting a hat....not that successfully!
Am v much a beginner but joining a group sounds good.
beamarshall 24-01-2006, 18:40 how exciting! i just finished a scarf that took 400 metres of yarn!
there are some people who meet to knit/crochet once a month and i have joined their yahoo group. if you want to join the link is below http://uk.groups.yahoo.com/group/sheffieldknitterati/
so far, suggestions for non-smoking venues that are central are the weatherpoons pub in town. my plan is to check it out one evening and if it's a ppropriate then we should be able to get stitching n' bitching within a couple of weeks!
I would be interested i live halfway area but central would be ok-- i have been searching on line-- nothing in Sheffield but in other areas librarys seem to be a popular venue for day-time-- possibly council encourage-ment for this type of craft group
beamarshall 05-02-2006, 16:19 hi rab 1. The plan is for stitch n' bitch to happen on a monday evening, 8pm onwards at the weatherspoons pub next to John Lewis. I wanted to go and check it out last monday but got ill and i'm away tomorrow. The reason for the venue is that they are completely non-smoking and central is most convenient for most of the people.
I went to sheffield knitterati a couple of weeks ago. they meet at Sheffield Hallam Union (formerly national centre for popular music) on the last friday of every month, 12-2pm. Everyone was really friendly. the link to join the yahoo community for Sheffield Knitterati is above and stitch n' bitch will be promoted from the link also.
I'll post again as soon as i have a start date.
Ooooh, that sounds exciting. I'm not in Sheffield, but I'm a keen knitter and just thought I'd wish you luck with setting up the Stich n Bitch. On a side note, has anyone seen the new Rowan magazine and books which are out this month? The RYC ones in particular look like they've got some nice patterns :) .
Plain Talker 07-02-2006, 08:30 I'm interested, too.

I brought the Stitch and Bitch book a while back too. I can 'sort of' knit, but if someone would be happy to help me out I'd like to come along to this too :D
hi, got any idea of a definite venue yet? (and a time?)
beamarshall 20-02-2006, 21:56 Sheffield stitch n' bitch starts monday 27th February - 8pm at the wetherspoons pub next to john lewis!!!
we've not managed to check out the venue but as it seems the only non-smoking venue in the town centre we're hoping it'll be great!
see you there - and please email friends, colleagues etc to let them know too!
Plain Talker 20-02-2006, 22:39 OOOH sounds good! look forward to that!
will do my best to be there.

susiepoosie 27-02-2006, 17:46 Is anyone going to the stitch and bitch meet tonight at Wetherspoons? Don't want to be the only strange lady walking round with me knitting!! :loopy:
beamarshall 27-02-2006, 21:49 was great to see people at stitch n' bitch tonight - really looking forward to meeting up each week (until baby arrives!).
i felt the venue was good despite dim lights and boys dressed in fine hawaiian garb!! it would still be more ideal for FOB to go non-smoking for us on a Monday night so i can bring baby. i'll try and get in touch with them.
Plain Talker 28-02-2006, 11:50 I enjoyed myself, too.
I got a fair few rows done of my baby blanket I'm making for my sister. and I definitely want to get myself a copy of the stitchnbitch book.
I love that little baby cap that bea and the other lady had made from the pattern in the book, they were just sooooooooo Shweeeeet! lol

susiepoosie 28-02-2006, 22:00 It was great last night at the stitch and bitch meet. Off to buy the book and looking forward to next monday! Loved the little hats, really cute :hihi:
Plain Talker 13-03-2006, 21:25 sorry, stitchers, I wasn't able to make it tonight, as I was called away. last minute, to a meeting of a committee that I am part of.
looking forward to coming next week, anyway.
see you all there?

carolineww 15-03-2006, 17:17 Hi there!!
How weird! My boyfriend's Mum showed me her stitch and bitch books the other night and I vowed I would learn to knit!! Is the group still meeting on a Monday night in Weatherspoons???? Do new people turn up every week? I would love to join so please let me know if it is still on........and is it the norm for people to help beginners who don't know what they are doing??
Thank you :)
Plain Talker 21-03-2006, 11:17 Went to wetherspoons last night, but I was the only one who was there :(
Can we confirm that the group is continuing, and that there is/ was no change of venue (I know that there was a suggestion of changing to a non-smoking cafe, which is something I would be okay with)
I don't want to be traipsing all the way there, if there's no-one else going to attend.
and CarolineWW:- i'm sure that, if you attended a group, the more experienced knitters would help you learn what to do.

Plain Talker 27-03-2006, 18:06 hello, it's PT again, there's been no replies since my post, last week.
is there a meet tonight? no-one's said anything...
It's only an hour to the start-time, but as I said above, I really don't fancy taxi-ing it all the way there (and back!) again, this week, to discover that no-one could be bothered to turn up... A fiver, there and back, is a dear "do", for nothing.

I'm very interested, I can crochet and its been a while since I knitted, have you found a venue yet? I would love to join do we get to have a glass of vino?

If you have a look in the 'Recommended Knitting Links' thread at the top of the page, you'll see a section on local knitting groups. The latest information I have on this group is there. I'm not in Sheffield, so I can't go to the meetings myself.
The only person I know who contributes regularly to Sheffield Forum and has gone to the meetings, is Plain Talker. I don't think she'd mind me saying that you should send a PM to her and ask is she knows anything further. Sorry to not be of more help.
Hello!
Can anyone tell me if the stich & bitch group is still running and what the venue is? Also love the book and have so far made numerous scarves and a baby hat with ears that came up rather small (something tells me I have a tension issue!) Would be great to come along if y'all are still meeting.
I've found a good way to get advice from more experienced knitters is to do it in public (especially at Sheffield station) - I'm left handed and apparently my technique (or lack of it) looks "painful"...so I definitely need some help!
Vicky
Hi Vicky,
If you have a look in the recommended links section here (http://www.sheffieldforum.co.uk/showthread.php?t=98114), you'll find all the information I have about the Sheffield Stitch n Bitch group, though I think it might be a little out of date. There's also a link to another group, the Sheffield Knitterati.
Someone who attended one of the earlier Stitch n Bitch meetings mentioned that the person who originally posted on the forum about the group had recently had a baby. If she was organising the meetings, maybe they're on temporary maternity leave?
If we in this 'virtual' knitting group can help you out with any knitting issues, please feel free to ask :) . I'm not a left-hander myself, but I know that many who are often find the continental knitting method a lot easy than the English method.
As for the tension problem; I can relate. I always have 'issues' with tension, as I tend to knit very tightly. Even when I do a tension switch before hand, I usually find the knitting's still a bit tight on the actual garment I'm knitting. I often have to go up a full needle size to get the tension specified in the pattern.
There's a really good article about knitting tension here (http://www.earthguild.com/products/knitcroc/marypat/gauge.htm#gauge05).
Welcome to the knitting group :) .
