View Full Version : Does Sheffield need an observation tower?
367squadron 18-03-2004, 15:38 I was searching the 'net' and i came across info about observation towers. Liverpool and Glasgow have one so whats stopping Sheffield having one?? I think it would be great to see the views across Sheffield, aswell as increasing the amount of tourism in the city. What do you think?
I've got to say, when travelling through Europe last year, lots of cities we visited had towers. Quite often the first thing we would do when arriving somewhere was find the tower and go up it. Could be cool if it was a really impressive design that will still look good in 50 years. Liverpools is a bit pants as the general public can't go up it. I'm sure the view would be could if you could though.
MissEllie 18-03-2004, 16:01 I don't know if it "needs" one, but it would be cool to see the view from one.
I agree with Andy though, one with a nice design please!:P

Besides, the best place to go for an aerial view in Liverpool is up the tower of the Anglican Cathedral. Man, that is just incredible. Equally impressive is inside the tower as you near the top, and you look over this frighteningly low wall to see the vast bells - the largest and heaviest bells in the world I believe.
I'd have thought there was less 'need' for an observation tower in Sheffield due to number of hills - there are some great high views in the city already. (Would still be cool though).

Yeah that sounds pretty cool, never been up the cathedral tower before. might try it over easter.
garrence 18-03-2004, 16:39 Observation tower? I think we could get away with a step ladder on top of Bole Hill.
Edit: oops Damon already said that

I've never been up there, but I'd love to. I have a fear of heights yet I can't resist panoramic views.
There's a fantastic view up by the Everton Park flats - highly recommended. Oh yes, and the Royal Hospital / John Moores University Hospital has a surprisingly good view too ;)
you wouldnt be able see anything over the hills??
and anyway wht type of observation tower?? like a air traffic control tower or what?

There are a couple of lifts, then the last bit is up stairs inside the tower. If you've got a fear of heights, you'll need to brace yourself for this bit! But it's worth it.
mega_monty 18-03-2004, 22:16 Norton Water tower makes a fab observation tower and its right on top of the hill...
Plain Talker 18-03-2004, 22:37 Yeah, they say that you can see as far as cleethorpes from Norton Water tower, when the conditions are right....
I was talking about the water tower with my boss only the other day.. we both grew up under the shadow of the water tower. and he was commenting that you can see the water tower from almost everywhere in sheffield.
I remember going up the water tower as a kid. I remember the view being amazing, but that discovery was marred by myalmost immediate discovery, at that very point, that i am, actually, afraid of heights!!! LOL

Sounds good but we all know what would happen.
First there would be a ten year fight to find a site with all the nimbyism that entails. Then the council would get involved a make a hash of the costings, and then to top it all off you and I will get bigger council tax bills for somthing that we will never go up.
It would be nice if we could have stuff like this, but it causes that much upset I think why bother. Look at things like the Dome and the Popular music center , two projects of many that this country ballsed up.
there's a fantastic view of the city from the top of the Hallam Towers hotel on the roof - often used to go up there at night when I worked there.
Agent Orange 19-03-2004, 08:00 It would be nice to have one for the novelty value, but Sheffield has many natural view points anyway i.e. seven hills. Something that most other cities don't benefit from.
jackthedog 19-03-2004, 08:22 Yeah, just stick to the hills. And if you crave that observation tower thing a lot, make a relative ill so you can get them in the Hallamshire hospital. Then you can sit in the dayrooms looking out on the city all day.
...well, between 2pm - 8pm anyway.
joke
Yes of course, this is just what we need. Just ask the council. As long as it costs millions, goes more millions over budget, after the first 12 months nobody ever uses it, and is designed to need demolishing within 30 years there'll be no stopping them. And of course "budget constraints" will mean that they save money by building it shorter than the surrounding buildings. (Not that I'm a cynic or anything - but my council tax bill arrived this week!).
Alternatively they could put a bit of tarmac in the potholes in my road... no, far better spent on a tower.

The tower could be connected to the cable car network that they're planning. That way, nobody would need to use the roads...
Captain_Scarlet 20-03-2004, 21:45 What on earth do you want to obsvere from a tower in Sheffield ???

seriously, one of the best views in sheffield is from the top floor of park hill flats, at the highest point (the end nearest town). breathtaking!

Thats a good idea! Not that improbable either.
I mean, the Ewoks never had problems with unsurfaced roads did they...
yeah why not....was Sheffields first observation tower at the fire/police museum so they could look for fires?
