View Full Version : The Bakewell Tart
Does anyone if the film is still been made about this? I read ages ago that Juila Roberts was been lined up to play the part of the "Bakewell Tart" murder victim Wendy Swell. Stephen Downing spent 27 years behind bars for her murder only to be release a couple of years ago and paid compensation for a huge miscarriage of justice. Do you think that such a film would be actually filmed in Bakewell or would they move it somewhere more glamorous?
PaulTansley 03-05-2003, 07:19 first of all i don,t think Mr Downing has been compansated yet as he is still top suspect for this murder after an intensive new inquiry, however regarding the film I think the parents of Wendy Sewell, persuming there still alive should benefit financially from this film.
We don't want criminals benefiting from this type of crime unless he is exonarated without any doubt.
Bakewell seems a nice setting but maybe to close to home i reckon.
Who says it is a huge miscarriage of justice? certainly not the police who still regard Stephen Downing as the only viable suspect. One has to be very carefull about jumping to conclusions as this matter still has to be resolved.
It may well be that this man is innocent, and the truth might never come out, being lost in the mists of time. it could be that there is more to this than meet's the eye, I.E. did this woman know him? where they having an affair? had they arranged to meet in the cemetery.who knows?

It's been reported in the media that Downing has already received £250,000 in compensation for his time spent in custody, with the final sum expected to be £500,000 to £1.8M.
The Home Office naturally refused to confirm this figure or if the results of any new enquiry will affect the terms of this settlement.

Mr Downing's case has become regarded as one of the country's most significant miscarriages of justice. He was released from prison on appeal in 2001 and a court ruling overturned his conviction last January. If the court ruling has been overturned then surely this can be classed as a miscarriage of justice! Until any new evidence/charges come to light it has to remain this way.

Hey leave the old fella alone, whats it matter if he using an apostrophe in the wrong place.
You should value his contribution, not critique his grammer.

You annoy me also Sidla, it was sixty years since I was at school and I have never had a lesson since. Who do you think you are criticising me, are you perfect mate ????????????????????????????????????????????
Thank's Mikey, I appreciate your support and your use of apostrophe's is very humorous.
PaulTansley 04-05-2003, 08:24 Thought this topic was about Stephen Downing not you lot sqabling over apostrophies...Lets get back to the real topic.
If Downing has already been compensated and the new police enquiry which is still on going ruled out anybody else who could have done this murder then one contridicts the other as they are saying that Downing is the only suspect and then paying him a big fat cheque for serving 27 years.
Mind you the Law is far from perfect anyway as it tends to look after the criminals and ignore the victims.

I have seen it said that there are no other suspects so by that logic yes Downing must be only suspect, but he has apparently refused to be interviewed again but is still cooperating with the police.

Of course. :P
Anyway, if you insist I'll stop editing your posts, but it only makes you look less credible by having poor punctuation.
Who do you think you are editing my post's? why don't you edit your own ? I was going to school when you were still in napkin's. Mind your own business and get off my back, if you are so superior go and learn to spell because you certainly need some lesson's.
Lets see if your apostrophes stay this time Hal.
Sidla has been exposed
Bored student = Moderator :D
Anyway lets let it drop and get back to talking about Bakewell Tarts

OK, I've been nit-picking, but as far as I can see it's for your own benefit. A lot of what you say makes a lot of sense to me and I think you sound like quite an intelligent man with some good opinions. However by misusing punctuation it makes you seem less credible and could lower people's opinion of you. I don't mean anything bad by it, I'm just trying to make you look better :)
i knew a tart from bakewell many years ago she was a fat lass with legs like stork sb
