This has been mentioned on another thread so I thought I'd give it it's own.

I agree with what was said there, I love St Ives - it's one of the nicest places I've ever been, Polperro (Cornwall) is also very nice.

Yep, I'll be back there in June, taking my two wee kiddies for their first visit. First of many I hope. :)

if you feel like a posh meal we found a lovely place on the harbour front - can't remember the name but I know where it is. Was a posh restaurant upstairs but a cheaper bistro downstairs and the food was great - they do nice sandwiches at lunchtime too.

I went to Newquay a few years ago and that was nice, but after two weeks we kinda ran out of stuff to do.

I'm a big fan of Cleethorpes for a day out though. :)

Chris.

There's not much to really do in Cleethorpes. Too many arcades and not much else.....unless you just want to walk along the sea front and have your hair blown everywhere.

I like Skeggy, not been in ages, but there's more to see and do there and chip alley is always worth a wander down. I've always loved Blackpool too - cliched and kitch and very expensive but it's part of the good old British tradition.

It depend on what you mean by seaside town. If you mean commercial like, or just by the sea.

Now a just by the sea place would be anywhere quiet, like the beaches in Scotland where you are the only one there.

I imagine being by the sea is the only qualification a seaside town would need.

I do love scarborough. Used to go as a kid and spent long days ont he beach..then I went through a period of hating the place.

Took my kids there a couple of years ago and I just adore the place now - as do the kids.

Anywhere there's a nice view, clean sand and sandhills. Preferably without loads of people. I find quiet beaches the best place to be if you need to think and contemplate life. Really miss my view of snowdon back home. Though don't really miss seagulls, they're very annoying.

Brighton, even without the picturesque ruined pier.
Dover the worst by a long way.

AAAAARRRRGGGHHHH!!! No!!! Please God no!! Its an absolute ****-tip, believe me i'm bloody well living there, and missing Sheffield and its cosmopolitan ways (quiet pubs/bars, independent cinema, a live music scene, comedy clubs, lack of dog poo on the pavements, people with a sense of style).

There are, it would appear, 3 types of 'Blackpudlian':

1. Drunk unemployed Scottish people.
2. Drunk unemployed single mums.
3. Drunk unemployed drunks.

everyone seems to be dressed in the de rigeur scally uniform - Rockports, white socks, trackie bottom tucked into said white sicks, Henri Lloyd stripey jumper, 'Blurberry' (to avoid copyright theft) cap.

The pubs insist on playing the latest offerings of euro-techno/trance dirge at FULL VOLUME FROM OPENING TIL CLOSE. theres more dog poo on the pavements than tarmac.

Its essentially a really really rough town (1pm last Saturday i was walking down the main street and some bloke got glassed right in front of me, 2 weeks ago 3 people stabbed each other in a brawl on a residential street).

It appears to be the dumping ground for all the north-west's undesirables. Theres a permanent air of menace about the place. Its really fun walking down a street looking over your shoulder, keeping a tight hold of your keys so that you may be able to fend off any imminent attack with a quick jab to the eye, on your way to work. But perhaps i'm just paranoid - new town and all that.

Tradition - what tradition would that be?! Perhaps 40-50 years ago, but now tradition seems to be get you and 20+ mates together, ideally single sex groups of either lads or lasses aged 17-28. Get plastered by 1pm, fight, continue drinking, fight, do karaoke, fight, dance, fight, drink, fight, fumble with lass/lad, fight, go to strip club, fight.

I'll stop there, its been good to have a rant. Blackpool is not the 'jolly english seaside resort' it used to be, but i guess its my job as a town planner to try and help it relive its former glories...i have my work cut out.

Matlock.

All the advantages of a seaside town without the gales, herring gulls or the.. erm.. sea.

I think I've gone off Blackpool now. It's years since I've been - don't fancy it anymore.

Whitby - ahhh yes. Nice for a day, but no longer.

No one has mentioned Bridlington.

Top place, nice and quiet.

Matlock Bath, is truly the finest 'seaside town' in the country, or at least it gives a very credible impression of being the best seaside town in the country.

Lovely promenade, with a couple of excellent fish & chipshops, arcades, it has a nice family atmosphere, a theme park for the tots (Gulliver's), cable cars, caverns, lovers walks, fireworks and illuminations.....

Lovely stuff. And it's only 25 miles away.

Lifelong Scarborough fan!

I think I'll buy that nice castle and be an eccentric loon dressed in regal robes sat up there watching the world go by with a few tinnies. (boarders welcome to pop by).

Its got everything! Nice town, contrast between the 2 bays, peasholme, secluded little rocky beaches further out, lovely harbour, And a Distinct Northern Quintessential Englishness...

(oh, and raw sewage on the - side)

Hmm, tough one.

Southport is pretty amusing

But Fower in Cornwall is hard to beat. Not quite seaside, but the water is salt.

Has to be Scarborough ... although Mablethorpe is pretty cool too.

The best TRUE seaside resort in Britain, just has to be Torquay. It is unique insomuch that it has a truly continental feel to it.

The nearest thing to going abroad without actually leaving the country.

So agree! Why oh why did noone else say this?! Fond memories of folk festivals, drunken parties, camping, collapsing in fits of stomach agony for no reason on the middle of the cobbled streets...aaah

Shepherds Purse (it's changed its name now), top place, laods of great pubs - the plough, tap and spile, black thingy, whitby spa is wicked for ceilidhs, beach is good for musicing on, steps are good for busking on, mini golf good for...

The list goes on. I <heart> WHITBY!

Wow you paint an ugly picture indeed and I can believe you as no British holiday resort is the same as it was in the 60s.
I think the inland venues are more popular these days, The lakes, Wales and even the Peak District for the Southerners.Originally posted by Barra

I've never liked Mablethorpe apart from the fact it only has one street I class it has a LAST resort along with Cleethorpes. The sea can be pretty rough at mablethorpe too.

Barra, couldn't agree with you more.

Blackpool has to be the a***hole of the country run a close second by Morcambe.

It's smelly, dirty, tacky and I feel very sorry for you living there.

I like Whitby although it has no real beach to speak of. Someone mentioned Cromer also, home of many misspent childhood nights.

If you're there for the water sport (as it were) then Brig House Bay (Kirkudright, south west Scotland) has THE most amazing beach. shallow, still water. Somewhere you can send the kids out in an inflatable dingy without them getting washed out to sea.

I'm going off topic a little here...

Love Whitby, fond memories of those folk festivals and had the pleasure of checking out the goth festival last November - very entertaining!

My favourite sea side place has to be Robin Hoods Bay, but not really a town is it!
