Off topic for a moment...

When I was about 14, I was on a German exchange thing at school. I went to a little northern town called Leer. This place isnt exactly a tourist destination, I shouldnt imagine many people have reason to go there to holiday or anything.
So imagine my suprise when, as a Hillsborough lad, I saw a UK registered Toyota parked in the car park of the restaurant we were eating at, that had been bought from Monty's Toyota on Penistone Road. I couldnt beleive it when I saw the dealer's window sticker in the back...

Sorry to be off topic, just thought it was funny.

The problem with the stamp of "made in sheffield" is it is aparently abused.
Mass producers in other countries just put the stamp on to charge a higher price for poor quality goods then Sheffield gets the blame when they fall to pieces - scumbags.

Do they still make beer in Sheffield? I remember the smell of the Wards brewery, and I felt a bit of loyalty when I drank Stones in the Hen & Chicks!

Yes, apparently somewhere in China has been called Sheffield, so they put Made in Sheffield on their cutlery. For this reason, most proper Sheffield steel will say Made in Sheffield, UK on it now.

Sadly, even cutlers such as Richardsons (opposite Kelham Island) import their cheap cutlery from the far east, pack it here in "Richardsons Sheffield" packets then ship them out again. I asked about this, and apart from their most expensive ranges (made here) this is their standard practice.

I have it on good authority (I have a friend in the "trade" over there) and he says that all the expensive luggage, Fendi, Louis Vuitton, you name it is made in China, shipped to Europe where they can add a clasp/handle or a trim of some kind, then they can label it "Made in France" or wherever and charge extortionate prices for it. Richardsons can probably add a handle to a knife or something and then add "Made in Sheffield".

Something to do with the European laws.

Outrageous, isn't it?

Sorry to hijack the post, just wanted to add weight to what tombeharrell said.

I think there are quite a few micro breweries in Sheffield - notably the Fat Cat at Kelham Island, and the Hillsborough Hotel. By far the best local beer (and in fact possibly my favourite beer from anywhere) is Moonshine by the Abbeydale brewery. Mmmmm!!

When I was a student, we used to drink `Roger and out`, in 1/3 pint glasses, despite it tasting foul. The pub was the Frog and Parrot, and I think that was a micro brewery. Never seen it`s products anywhere else though.

The Company of Cutlers in Hallamshire own the trademarks "Sheffield" and "Made in Sheffield" anyone else uses those at their peril, the cutlers company employ legal experts to pursue infringements. Products from another town named "Sheffield" wouldn't be able to use that as a way to avoid the (international) trade mark law. Sheffieldforum.co.uk is possibly potentially infringing (but a polite approach to the Cutler's company would probably be handled reasonably.)

Sadly, even cutlers such as Richardsons (opposite Kelham Island) import their cheap cutlery from the far east, pack it here in "Richardsons Sheffield" packets then ship them out again. I asked about this, and apart from their most expensive ranges (made here) this is their standard practice.
The cutlers Company insist that there must be some local input beyond bringing manufactures from elsewhere and stamping their trade mark on it. There are still several manufacturers in Sheffield who produce top quality cutlery locally but it does attract a substantial price premium and so some do have part of the manufacture done elsewhere for their cheaper sets in order to be able to compete with the cheap foreign imports. If in doubt, ask, you can even go to the factories and see the start to finish process - I have and it's quite an eye opener to watch a dull lump of steel rod become a carving knife for example. Widening the view from table cutlery to anything with a blade (which is approximately the Cutlers company definition) including pen-knives, chisels, scissors, machine knives, saws (http://www.flinn-garlick-saws.co.uk/) for example, you'd be surprised just how much is still made here and at the high regard in which the trade marks are held all over the world as being synonymous with high quality.

Don Alexander does have Sheffield made goods but some of it is Japanese. A certain range of designer cook knives that are sold there, has one piece that is manufactured in Japan. The rest of the range are a marriage of French blades and Sheffield S/S handles.
The town of Sheffield that is supposed to exist in China is a complete fallacy, its the Cutlery firms in Sheffield that buy the finished goods and just mark them "Made in Sheffield".
One large Silverware manufacturer imports goods from Korea and Puerto Rico. To me that is totally dis-honest, in fact the place I work does the very same thing only its taken from its shipping boxes put in designer boxes and sold under the guise of made in Sheffield, its does not say made in Sheffield but neither does it say made in Japan.

They sell Roger and OUt in the HogsHead in Orchard Square, where they also sell Hoegaarden... mmmmmmmm :)

The Chinese govt renamed a town Sheffield, just so they could put the name Sheffield on its cutlery.... imagine Sheffield is a brand as worth forging as much as Rolex and Louis Vuitton!

Boring but true:

My wife works for an engineering company that makes (among other things) blades for bread slicing machines.

The blank pieces of stainless steel that are eventually made into the blades are imported into Australia from Sheffield!

Hi

I'm a Lancastrian living in Manchester and enjoy a trip across the Pennines every now and then!

Since the closure of Spoils Factory Shop a few years ago, it has been really difficult to buy affordable Sheffield cutlery in my city.

I feel that Sheffield items shouldn't just to be confined to the dining tables of royalty and such-like! They should be in our schools, hospitals, pubs and the local coffee shop! Every home should have some!

However, I've found some great places in Sheffield to stock up:

Hiram Wild - UK's largest volume manufacturer on Herries Road did have a factory shop when I last checked! Thay might do mail order for folks unable to get there!

Sheffield Scene facing the town hall on Surrey street - friendly service - High quality stainless steel items from 50p in their bargain basement!

Kutrite Scissors on Russell Street near Kelham Island - bargains galore!

It's really coming to something when some of the giants of Sheffield cutlery are now importing stuff with their moniker on it!

I make small items of electronic equipment, and would like to state that they are "made in Sheffield". There was a Star story about the brand being relaunched so I emailed the contact listed and asked what I needed to do to enaure I qualified.

Not heard a dicky bird since. :(

Well that explains why my dishwasher-safe, supposedly stainless steel knives have rust spots on them

I lived in Southern Ireland for a number of years, and my neighbours there had been introduced to Hendersons Relish years ago.... and it can't be bought in the Emerald Isle... so every time I came back to blighty, i had to stock up on relish for the irish neighbours !

I'm licking my lips at the thought of Hendersons relish - a lovely salad dressing! It's OK for vegetarians as Worcestershire Sauce is generally not! A mate of my Dad from Sheffield / Hope Valley introduced me to it!

They sell it for ten pounds per litre at
http://www.hendersonsrelish.com/

I have trouble finding it 35 miles across the Pennines here in Manchester but I think a select few supermarkets do stock it this side of the border!

When in Sheffield I tend to visit the excellent art galleries and the museum near the university. Often buy flatware or scissors and have a pint of honest ale in the Fat Cat or the Devonshire Cat! Kelham Island ales and Abbeydale are made in Sheffield! I've never rewarded myself with a Wards but the last I heard was that they revived the brand but making it in another part of the country! I presume Stones bitter (certainly not my tipple!) is made at Burton on Trent or somewhere now!

Bradfield may not strictly be in Sheffield but they do make absolutly the best range of draught beers.

Period.
End of chat.
No question.

For those who have not tried it yet:-

Farmers Bitter, Farmers Stout, Farmers Pale ale, Farmers Blonde
are all excellent.
Lets all support this local, small businessman in his endeavour to provide a top quality product at a good price by drinking as much as possible!!

Sheffield industry has let the people down imo.

We were once respected for our steel and out cutlery, but not any more. It's not just price, I think it's a cop-out to simply blame cheap manufacturing in the far east.

The quality of our products hardly improved since the victorian era!

Every camping and sports shop sells Swiss Army knives or those American Leatherman's. They must be worth hundreds of millions globally!

Don't tell me people wouldn't buy a similar Sheffield product at a similar price/quality.

To be honest I bought a Swiss Army knife recently and it is a million times better than the Sheffield made British Army knife. In fact there's no comparison, our Sheffield knife is just the same as it was in WWII and it was out of date even then.

Shame. What happened?

Yeah - I fell into that "trap" last Christmas when I picked up a "Richardson, Sheffield" cutlery set at the Victorian Christmas Market event. Only after I opened the box did I discover that the only connection to [our] Sheffield was that's where I'd purchased it! (made out in the far east somewhere)

To be fair though, the quality was actually still pretty good (if not "Sheffield good".. 8) )

Madeinsheffield in great - get in there and have a search around. I bought my old man a gorgeous rosewood handled letter opener in the Eccy road shop a couple of months ago which he was chuffed to bits about.

Other countries falsely stamping 'Made in Sheffied' - one of the first was the USA in about 1920-21, much to the annoyance OF various Sheffield people of note. Didn't stop them false stamping though - especially as some Sheffield retailers were buying the false stuff and flogging it to Sheffielders themselves!!!!!
