Hi all, out of curiosity does anyone happen to know when the council house improvement works are due to start in Shirecliffe.

Reason Im asking is because I went to see a house exchange on Saturday and the house has alot of potential but has to have a load of work done to it, like a fitted kitchen, the toilet moved upstairs, a front drive made, double glazing, house pebble dashed and the stair case banisters knocked out.

I was told by the tenant of the property that the works are to be finished within 6 months, but knowing how slack councils are do you think that 6 months is a fesible timescale?

Any information you can give me would be great.

Thanks

Jo

Thanks hachandhach, I rang up Sheffield Homes and was advised to speak to the Investment team.

I was told the improvements are due to start this year but they dont know when to be exact, it could be the begining of the year or the end.

What more can you expect from the council, at least Im one step closer to an exchange and thats better then nothing.

Hi Squashie28

I'm in Shirecliffe and all our modernisation started in May last year and took about 3/4 months to complete.

Saying that there still building drives and walls on the road but all internal work ie, fitted kitchen, new bathroom, central heating all finished long ago.

Dont assume you're going to get a driveway built either, we havent got one even though we have a car.

Hiya susa41981 thanks for your response.

Can you tell me how far you are from Boynton Road because the house that Im asking about is located here.

The house needs serious modernisation but hasnt actually been started as yet.

The tenants told me that the houses on the opposite side of the road have already been finished and the council are due to start the improvements on their house on the 7th February.

I really am eager for this exchange to go ahead because I really like the area and I will be pleased as punch if the improvements take as you say 3/4 months to complete.

I just want to try and determine if the tenants are being upfront and honest with me about the improvement works starting date as there is no way I intend to go through with the exchange until the council are at least half way through with the improvement works.

I dont mean to sound like a snob but it would be stupid of me to move out of my current home, that needs nothing done to it into a house that needs a ton of work done, if you understand what I mean.

We're on Musgrave Crescent which is just off Longley Avenue West.

Just a bit of advise Squashie28, if you do an exchange before or in the middle of the work going on just be prepared for the worst as the mess can get quite unbelievable.

We were lucky as we did an exchange for the house just before work started so didnt bother decorating until it had all been done. You've just got to stand back, deal with the mess and think that its all going to be worth it which it will be but dont let it get to you otherwise I can see it driving some people crazy.

I think the couple will probably be telling you the truth but you can always call local housing office and they should be able to tell you when work on that half of the road is about to start, hope this helps.

Good luck

I've just remembered as well. I was walking along Shirecliffe Road other day and remember seeing the same workmen who worked on our house working on other houses, I'm sure it was Boynton Road now I think about it.

Thanks for the info Susa,

Im really pleased that you saw the workmen on Boynton Road at least that goes to show somethings being done on that road.

Both me and my other half are preparing ourselves for the mess that the improvements will cause, we were told that you still find dust 6-12 months after the works are completed and thats going to be a pain in the nether regions because I suffer really badly from Asthma.

The only reason I questioned the tenants honesty is because Ive been looking for an exchange now for about 3 years and I have to tell you the amount of lies Ive been told is shocking, its really difficult to take people and what they say at face value.

Like I said before the tenants told me that the works to their property will start on the 7th Feb and as Im due to come up to Sheffield on the 17th Feb me and my other half will check the house out again and see what has been started, then we plan to work out with the tenants when to submit the exchange forms.

I just hope it all goes according to plan and no more obstacles get in our way.

They're doing the houses on Standish Road at the moment as well.

I can well imagine the amount of untruths or exagerations people make when wanting to do an exchange, I've heard about stories myself.

If I was you though, I'd lstill get in contact with the housing office who'll be able to confirm a date of when work due to start so you have some sort of confirmation from a legitimate source.

Let us know how it goes when you go to have a look at the house.
