Donesk Way (sp.) is fairly flat where the tram runs along side it

Why name it Flat Street when it's so obviously sloped! Someone had a sense of humour back then. Pond Street is pretty flat until it becomes flat st though

What about Brightside lane or Penistone road.

Have you seen the Simpsons episode featuring the Springfield Monorail, where the popcorn van falls down that huge pothole in the road and explodes? Carlisle Street isn't far off that stage now! A pity, because it's a good shortcut for getting in/out of town (light traffic and no lights / speed bumps)

But seriously, the Don Valley area is the flattest part of Sheffield, which is why we have the airport (err...airstrip) up there.

For that reason, I think the flattest road would be Brightside Lane, as Lickszz mentions. It goes all the way from Meadowhall almost to the edge of the city centre.

I'm not familiar with Penistone Road. Is it the road that goes from the edge of town thru Hillsborough? Because that is a flat road, and is heavily populated by 60mph kamikaze drivers :loopy:

The viaduct stretch of the M1 is pretty flat, I'd have to say :D

Hope they get pulled over or caught on camera for doing 60mph, its only 30mph along penistone road.

Yes Penistone road is pretty flat,

For dirtiest, the road that runs parallel to middlewood tram stop is always filthy.

Hmm. Thats all the building works I reckon. all the crap runs down the hill and collects on Middlewood Road. Theres been mud all over that road for about a year and half. Its terrible. Slippy, too.

No way, Carlisle St is by far the dirtiest. It's like driving across a sheet of thick dust and dirt with loads of muddy puddles.

Yep, just realised which is Carlisle Street. And yep, it is absolutely skeffed. to coin a phrase from school

ha ha ha spot on mate. i work on there, it's awful. brightside lane has that dip where it goes under the bridge, just past atlas ind est so doesn't that knock it out? penistone rd is a good one.

Surely the hard search would be to find a road with no pot holes in Sheffield.... now THAT has to be almost impossible

Penistone Rd is 30 mph, people think it is 40 ,dual carriage way and all that.Stupid really (not people,Highways dept). Come down Herries Rd just under the 5 arches the ring road changes from 40 -30. Halifax Rd also changes to 30,not sure where.

I don't quite get the meaning of this thread. Most roads are flat at certain points. Are we talking about a road that is flat in it's entirity, or just the road with the longest flat stretch?

What about Ecclesfield Road? That is almost totally flat and is longer than Carlisle Street.

I think that you mean Ecclesall Road! Ecclesfield Road is a big long hill with no flat bits that goes from Chapeltown at the bottom to Ecclesfield School at the top.

Ecclesfield Road starts at Wincobank doesn't it? Along Woolley Wood bottom, past the bottom edge of Shiregreen, and then on until it reaches Green Lane near the sports ground.

Ah, you mean Woolley Wood Bottom! I had forgotten that there were 2 Ecclesfield Roads :loopy: Doesn't it have dips by the road that goes up to Thorpe Helsey though?

Sam Miguel

Yes, it does. At the junction of Grange lane. Oh well, I forgot about that. I'll have another think.

"Penistone Rd is 30 mph, people think it is 40 , dual carriage way and all that.Stupid really (not people,Highways dept)."

I learnt to drive about a year ago. My instructor proved to me that if you drove along that road at 30mph then the lights would favour you the whole way along. Honestly, it worked - at least it did about 7.30pm on a thursday evening
