Fitzalan Square - Accident involving a Pedestrian, Commercial St closed in both directions
My Mum saw aftermath of this accident and it looked a bad one. It happened on corner of Haymarket/Commercial st outside Yorkshire Bank.
Just got back from town now.. I was there just after the bus stopped.. it was indeed a nasty accident, does anyone know how the lad is?
umm... I think I was there... from what we could make out a double decker bus hit an oldish man in an electric wheelchair buggy thing...
poor guy... don't think he'll be alive now :( the buggy was totally smashed up...
jester6881 21-01-2006, 13:47 The old man was in a buggy on the crossingand the bus crashed into him. He was bleeding from the head and wasnt moving. I was a witness to this and would appreciate if anybody has any more information to get in touch with me.
jester6881 21-01-2006, 14:02 His name is Frank Brown and he is in the Northern General Hospital.
Gosh, I totally missed the buggy. Mind you I only caught a fleeting glance when I realised there was a person in the road I looked away.
I do hope the chap will be o.k.
Im sure it said on radio today that the man hit the bus?! They also said there was no further news on his condition. Hope hes doing ok.
stumathers 22-01-2006, 15:37 Hi, is there any more info on this? I was there about 5 mins after it happened. looked pretty bad. Were there 2 wheel chairs there, im sure I saw 2.
jester6881 22-01-2006, 15:58 Just the one buggy. His name is Frank Brown, he has had 200 stitches and is in the Northern General at the minute but isnt looking too good.
My boyfriend was on the bus that hit the poor guy, he was right near the front and saw everything he said the bus turned after the traffic lights and it looked like the bloke on the buggy just went in front and smashed straight into the bus.
The police have took all his details but as yet hasnt contacted him.

SHANE-D-PAIN 23-01-2006, 18:42 This sounds awful Was he actually driving his buggy in the road or was he just crossing?
my friend was on that bus when it happened we heard later that the old man had died i hope not
There was a couple of lines in tonights Star about the accident. Said the man was in Northern Gen with head injuries.
According to my boyfriend he said that he was crossing the road.

SHANE-D-PAIN 23-01-2006, 20:04 Okay, I have seen people actually driving them about on the roads before. Got stuck in traffic going up Halifax Raod a few months back behind some old bloke in his 'sick ride'!
I know alot of accidents have been happening with the Buses and Tram recently. I think the drivers should be just that little bit more cautious!
To be fair though shane, theres only a certain amount of caution that a driver can use aside from going 5mph at all times just to make sure that no accidents occur, accidents do happen, my boyfriend was sat right near the driver the bloke just came out on him there was nothing he could have done to be any more cautious than he was, the poor bloke was in shock and had to be taken to hospital himself.
Put yourself in the drivers shoes, imagine how he must be feeling, one minute just doing his job driving passengers on his bus, the next running over some poor old bloke.
