Just heard that Channel 4's Time Team Special "Steel City" will be shown on Monday 22nd March @ 9.00pm.

It was filmed over the course of 2003 and features various sites around Sheffield.

Not sure where this belongs.. General.. TV...History?

got this email from my uni deparment a few days ago... (suspiciously also from a tony...)

On Channel 4, Monday 22 March, 9.00 pm, there is a programme
entitled 'Sheffield Steel City' and we understand that the
Department may be featured in this. This work was aimed at the
production of a 'traditional' hunting knife from 18th Century Swedish
Blister Steel and was mainly performed by Stuart Bater. Dr John
Whiteman and Rod MacKenzie (Archaeology) were also involved

According to a friend of mine Time Team is a swear word in most Archeaology departments.

I think that the Sheffield Special was basically a monitoring time team that follows various investigations led by ARCUS @ Sheffield Uni. Because it was done over time I suppose that it will be a bit more like "Meet the Ancestors" or similar where they follow something for a while.

You have to admit tho MM, a 3 day dig condensed into a 1HR prog makes great telly!

TT is a bit of a swear word among archaeologists, but we all watch it anyway. They seem to be able to get permission to dig absolutely anything, things you'd hardly ever get permission to dig even in a research context. If they want to watch the assorted scruffs at ARCUS, fine, but they should lay off the madness of last summer of thousands of uncontrolled holes in peoples' gardens.
And industrial archaeology is supremely dull anyway, judging by the hallway full of bricks and rusty pipes at the department...

I thought that the hand forging was at Kelham and the liquid lunch seemed to be at the Fat Cat.

To be honest I thought the programme was crap!!!!!!! They ignored all the interesting archaeology, I mean what about the castle FFS!

Very disappointing, I stayed out of the pub to watch it too!

Does anyone know how far ARCUS have delved into the castle after the demolition of the markets?

Tony

Well it was just a "year in the life" sort of thing. I thought that it gave a good insight. ARCUS only do what they are paid to do, so I guess that the Castle was off the menu!

It was also suggested that there is hardly any evidence regarding the flood, which was highlighted as a point on the show, which IMHO is b****x there is a lot of buildings/evidence of the flood around and none of it was shown.

Angry in Intake!

They said that they hadn't found much evidence of the flood on the Wisewood site apart from the re-building. They didn't talk about anywhere else.

As the programme was concentrating on Arcus looking at evidence of Sheffield's industry, why would they look at the castle?

The guy making the knife was lucky not to be eaten by the rolling mill!

I watched it and got rather annoyed when the developers were muscling in with their time schedule. It just makes me wonder about all that our ancestors went through to earn a living and how their endeavours, to some, mean nothing. We've probably had some very interesting walks/sites of interest concreted over with all the building that's gone on around the City. In this instance, with regard to the flood disaster and the siting of industrial activity which I thought was confined to town, Attercliffe-Meadowhall and around Kelham Island.

I'm now going to have a look for a site re: ARCUS

Don't forget that the developer is just the latest person to do what the archeology was showing. In 300 years, that development will probably be archeaology. It might be interesting, but we are always at a snapshot in time - this happens to be ours.

I thought the programme was fine.IMO it makes a change for Sheffield to be featured on telly.

Thought it was great, mainly because it was where I live!
I think they will do a Time Team when the markets get demolished to reveal the castle foundations, it would be too good to ignore.

That is so true but while our own actions today are recorded in one place or another I feel it is so important that we don't rush archaeological proceedings that unearth findings of life before.

Tony
24-03-2004, 09:21
TBH I don't think that they do rush them. By the same token, they don't want let archeologists spend months recording things for the sake of it, and I don't think that archeologists want to do that either. Any of our resident archeologists like to comment?
