When I first came to Sheffield the Nottingham House was a tiny corner pub with only room for about 20 people comfortably. They didn't even have a spirits licence. O'Neills used to be The York, the Fox and Duck was half the size it is now and there was a fish tank in The Southsea. Oh god, we're back to fish again.

I went to see him about something before he left, he has moved just up the road to one of the pubs in Crookes. The noah's ark I think.

speaking about pubs, i've noticed above the dorr of one on queens road, and in the strines that the licensee has a licence for;

"Beers, ales, wines, spirits and porters".

What are porters?

Basically Guiness is a type of porter. It's an older word for stout. In the old days all the breweries had their own porter, as well as bitter, mild etc..

Not strictly true.

There is some more information on the two styles here (http://www.camra.org.uk/SHWebClass.asp?WCI=ShowCat&CatId=298).

Stouts should get their bitterness and darkness through the use of roasted malt and barley, whereas Porters should be more obviously hopped with their darkness coming from black malt.

Places like the Kelham Island Tavern and Cask & Cutler will regularly have a stout or porter (sometimes both) available.

Anyway sorry to bore you, this is going off topic. :)

The Southsea did have a treacherous piece of lino infront of the bar though, we spent many a night watching people fall flat on their backs.
