View Full Version : Missing "Netto"
little malc 16-03-2004, 13:49 As an ex-pat living in Scarborough, its great to have such a good venue for chatting about the old pla ce, we feel we have come to a beautiful place to retire, but, we don't half miss having a Netto store, now is that sad or is that sad!!
fnkysknky 16-03-2004, 13:58 You miss Netto?!!!? This is a joke right? :loopy:
DaBouncer 16-03-2004, 14:38 Shows how much Scarborough is the bottom of the barrel eh ;)
They even had a Netto in Fuerteventura when I went a couple of years ago!:P
slimsid2000 16-03-2004, 14:44 Here's a joke I heard recently.
Q)What is a mile long and smells of pi**?
A) The queue at Netto.
this does not necessarily represent my own views, I am just passing it on.
cheers
garrence 16-03-2004, 14:53 LOL. Collect the set!
Q) What's black and yellow and full of sh**?
A) A Netto carrier bag.
Having been in to two of 'em... this does reflect my personal views. I like the continental supermarkets with their mounds of fresh produce, not these halls of chemical-laden rubbish.
Oi! I used to work in a Netto back when I was a full time student on NVQ Retail course at Loxley College! Worked in the South Road one up Walkley for about 8 months.
Certainly one of the better work placements I ever had in my opinion, they didn't mess me about like some of the others did...
Also, they now sell cheap Beer, therefore they rule! 6 small bottles of French lager for £2.99, excellent for when you want a drink but can't afford to go out to the pub.
Sam Miguel 16-03-2004, 15:53 Recently in my local NETTO (I only go in for my Stella) I experienced a full-blown fight between two female customers by the check-out.
They were at it for a good five minutes and by the end of it there were huge clumps of hair all over the floor. The securtity bloke finally managed to send them off on their way.
Somehow, I can't imagine this same scene in Marks and Sparks.

Because nobody with sense shops in M&S, their food is overpriced and crap, even their so called cheap plonk is not far off twice the price you'd pay for a good cheap bottle of wine in Netto.

I wouldn't say the food is crap in any sense of the word. It IS however over priced. Although I did buy a bottle of port from M&S at a very reasonable price... mmmmmmmm twas loverly!
Sam Miguel 16-03-2004, 16:01 Those two women fighting didn't have any sense. They knocked each other senseless.
I must agree, though: NETTO is OK for selective shopping such as wine, as long as you go in dressed in full battle gear.
fnkysknky 16-03-2004, 16:01 The food in Netto is disgusting - I also know what the night staff get up to with it as I know someone who used to work there - it's not pleasant anyway....
As for the cheap French beer for 3 quid - it's crap beer and hardly cheap.

Now who's the snob?! Imagine the outcry if I made such a remark.
Can't say I don't agree though, because I do....
Personally I've never been to Netto so can't really comment on the quality of their food. I think saying you "miss it" though is surely an overstatement?
M&S and Sainsbury's are the best for quality IMO.
uncleheed 16-03-2004, 17:43 A joke you missed
What's yellow and black and hngs from a c**t?

You really are deluded if you think M&S are quality! They're overpriced for a start, you can get an almost identical product as you could in M&S for nearly HALF the price in the Co-Op, and especially in Netto.
You see unlike you posh Eccleshall-ers, I'm just a commoner from an area of North Sheffield, therefore we can't afford to pay over the odds for our weekly shopping.

First point - M&S in my experience are quality, as are Sainsbury's. As for finding identical products at Netto for half the price, I wouldn't know because as I said I've never been there, though I doubt whether it is true.
Second point - grow up and stop being petty. I never mentioned anything to do with your background, thats your business, and I notice you weren't so quick to pull up Sam_Miguel who made what most would perceive as a "snobby" comment.
Here we go, first smokers, now Netto customers.
Isn't there a thread about prejudice somewhere?
you can get some good bargains in netto .i admit in the early days they did sell a lot of crap but tell me where you can get a case of 24 carslberg export for 6-99............
garrence 16-03-2004, 18:07 Prejudice against crap food? That's a good thing!!
The reason why the crap food exists is because lots of brits buy food on price alone and because the supermarkets have structured the market in such a segmented way. Anything in the supermarkets that is of reasonable quality has a little silver star and an "select range" logo, along with a huge mark-up.
A friend living in France says there isn't this range of quality there. Most of the food is of one standard, and paupers eat the same food as the well-off. And it's all good. I love the French supermarkets, great cheeses, baguettes and fruit n veg for low prices. Not the over-priced, over-waxed, chemical-laden stuff in the british supermarkets.
Its not the prejudice about crap food I'm commenting, its the prejudice against the folk who have to buy this crap food.
IE; What's yellow and black and hangs from a c***?
:loopy:
What's green and white and hangs from a complete ar$ehole?
Ans. A John Lewis carrier!!!
See, absolutely pointless and unfunny joke.
fnkysknky 16-03-2004, 18:25 It's only a joke ffs.
i bet some of these trendy /allegedly/ wine bars in the city centre sell the same wine whats on sale at netto for triple the price:loopy:
Let's hope all those people who've been called c***s who smell of ***** in the Netto queue agree:rolleyes:

Aldi is far better than Netto anyway
Aldi and Netto are exactly the same kind of shop in all but name... even the layout of the shop is the same, Aldi just paint their walls red instead of yellow to differentiate.
I don't get a lot of food from Netto, but the gammon from there is nice and the eggs are the same as any other egg I've ever purchaced. The queue in Netto is ridiculous though, if you only want to buy 1 or 2 items it gets very frustrating. They should have a baskets only checkout.
I agree about the food from M&S and Sainsburys though, it's far better quality. Much better than Safeway stuff.
MissEllie 16-03-2004, 20:08 Going back to the original posting, it's amazing what you miss when you aren't there any more. I'm currently waiting for someone to come over here (U.S.) with a jar of Cunninghams piccallili. Don't care where it was bought, posh shop or not;)
How sad is THAT:D

Netto actually purchase a lot of their food through Aldi.
Aldi and netto are very similar except that Aldi have their own brand of foods where as netto dont.
Aldi is cheaper too...and has good deals on from time to time with TV's etc!

don't suppose this french living friend of yours goes by the name of rohan does he????? if so, bordeaux doesnt count. i live in Nice in france and as he will tell you - prices here vary completely. it is a bit harsh to comment on prices and cultures til you've been here for yourself.....give me safeways and hunters bar spar shop any day - only 16 months til im home......
Sam Miguel 17-03-2004, 11:40 Netto and Aldi customers are totally different. Netto customers shop there to cut their food bills and occasionally enjoy a good punch-up in the aisles, as I have experienced.
Aldi customers shop at Aldi so they can have a bigger car on the drive, and own more state-of-the art material things.
Skatiechik 17-03-2004, 12:17 Netto and Aldi both stock up on processed food and more processed food and in a really tiny corner of the store will be a small section for fresh food, incl. fruit and veg. IMO this isn't good and doesn't promote a better diet for those on a low wage. THe reason why Netto/Aldi can sell processed food so cheap is the lack of money spent on marketing.
As for missing Netto, I think you must be missing something :loopy: :D
If you look in Tescos/Asda or even Morrisons. Signs everywhere advertising food and special deals, more money is spent on the layout of the store and the food is presented to the customer as to make it appealing.
I would shop at Morrisons, Tesco's or Asda anyday.
Sorry To20 wouldn't ever go to M+S or Sainburys for a weekly shop as there prices are just to high for no noticeable difference in quality between tesco or asda food.
As for missing Netto, I think you must be missing something :loopy: :D
*Twinkle* 17-03-2004, 12:33 Hehehe I've laughed my socks off as I've read this thread lol! :D
Well... here's my two penneth...
Netto is very cheap and has loads of foreign "never heard of" brands for people who don't really care what they're eating... As does Aldi and Lidl, however if I had to rate them, Netto would come bottom of the pile due to the clientele...
M & S is very expensive and there's no way my family could afford to shop there. However I pop in now and again for a few bits. I usually buy my lunch from there as the food is gorgeous and I've never found anything wrong with it. The people in there know how expensive it all is, so they don't attract the wrong sort of clientele.
Asda and morrisons - this is where you'll find me. Very good prices, morrisons is best for BOGOF's and buy 2 for £" etc deals... Asda has low prices but definately less deals. They also have their own range and the betterbuy/smartprice range for when you're a bit skint. never really had any complaints with either shop.

Exactly what I mentioned a couple of months ago - the Aldi at Meadowhall is full of posh people who are too tight to shop anywhere else (!!! -> IMO <- <- !!!)

I have shopped at the Netto at Lane Top. It wasn't a pleasant experience but I take your comment with a large pinch of salt ;)
Mind you, a few Christmases ago, when trolleys up there were in short supply, a woman celebrated finding two as if she had won the lottery.
Must have made her Christmas, that :loopy:
Skatiechik 17-03-2004, 12:38 On another point.
Tesco's and Asda are the best supermarkets for customer service. Politely ask if you need a hand packing, and also wait before you have finished before serving the next customer.
Now Morrisons are terrible, shove your food through, even pushing heavy items onto items that can be squashed easily. Don't offer to give you a hand with packing. Also they start serving the next customer before you have finished, and shove their food on top of yours whilst giving you evil looks for not being quicker at packing. But have to say there BOGOF deals are well worth the visit.
I have learnt that the trick is to pack all your items, before you hand over the cash/debit card then it doesn't happen. :D
another common one is netto scandernavian for value english for **** however i like netto

Like you have ever been and done the shopping. You only know it is M+S/
Sainsbusy's because you know that is where Mummy shops. You wouldn't know if she didn't tell you, and what difference is there to how much it costs,
surely it is what you make it taste like.
Sorry but i use Somerfield more than anywhere else. It is near, has some
good deals and loadsa fresh stuff.
I think it is up to you which shop you use and everyone has a reason to use
whichever one they like, which is why there are so many.
Scarborough is lacking in quite a few thing if i remember rightly, but it
does have the sea and fresh fish, and is a great place. Forget about Netto
and enjoy where you live.
*Twinkle* 17-03-2004, 13:42 I have learnt that the trick is to pack all your items, before you hand over the cash/debit card then it doesn't happen
Good one!
Classic Rock 17-03-2004, 15:49 Netto is cheap for deals on bottle beer
They are often cheaper than the beer distributors I deal with - sales reps from Scottish Courage and the like curse them as they sell it cheaper than them. I don't go to Netto often (enough?) but I've noticed that some expensive brands often found in leading chain supermarkets are generally cheaper there. OK for basic essentials but they don't stock everything so you often have to go somewhere on the way home to get other ingredients. Ho hum.
Aldi - useless for beer deals. Plenty of imitation Malibu. Tesco - OK at times on selected items. Sainsburys - not very competetive on beers or spirits, M&S forget it. Safeway - handy cos they are across the road if I run out, but you rarely get good deals.
little malc 17-03-2004, 16:02 Well, i'm sure about one thing, I started a good thread here!

They did try that a one point but it just became a nightmare with people with too many items, say over 8 in their baskets getting a rite mouthful from other shoppers!!and rightly so!!!!
I was in the store the nite of the cat fight,it was to do with guess what .a man!!sad eh?
Captain_Scarlet 17-03-2004, 16:38 Netto is the only shop where a bag costs more than a tin of beans...
jenhoppy 17-03-2004, 16:42 Netto also has its fair share of snobby customers, believe me!
We have re-named them fur coats and no knickers! They are usually the ones who are downrite arrogant and rude and as for manners....ha thats a joke! Most of them complain that the queues are too long or that they cant buy sugar and bread by the pallet load to flog in their own shops!!Some of the customers moaning in the queue are unemployed and WANT to be,the amount of time ive said to them do you want a job more cashiers are needed, and their reply ....oh no im better off on benefits!!!!. I rest my case!

I personally can't stand Netto. I've been in a few selected branches and I generally find their shops a tip.
I also refuse to believe that women are better shoppers than men. I'll shop any woman on this forum off her feet. I took a woman to Asda on Saturday (out of town) I asked her to pick up a rhubard pie. When I later cut a slice I was miffed to find it was a bloody cherry one. Too sickly! ;)

Heinz's beans are the same everywhere, regardless of where you buy them, whether you buy them from M&S, Sainsbury's, Netto, the corner shop down the road or wherever.... Only elitist prats like t020 think otherwise.

Netto do sell 'big name brands' such as Heinz as well as cheaper crap
Funky Dave 18-03-2004, 17:29 I think Netto do some brand names, and they are cheaper than anywhere else. The beer's well cheap too (you can get ordinary stuff like Carlsberg etc, as well as the slightly less well known brands). I tend to vary where I buy stuff, and I have to say that M&S do some top class food. Seek out their Aberdeen Angus pies!! Top stuff!!
I go to Netto for basics and Morrisons for other nice stuff. Both these shops are nearest to my home. I have to say I can always get some decent named brands like McCains oven roasties, and Bernard Mathews stuffed chicken, McVities biscuits and nice cheddar cheese and of course the wine, (Stowells, Banrock Station, Hardy's etc), my hubby likes Newcastle Brown ale and this is usually 99p .These nice items cost a lot less, and why pay another quid a bottle for the same brand wine and another quid for the exact same chicken. This leaves me with extra pounds to spend on WINE! I'm not a wino honest!
Abu Khan 18-03-2004, 18:26 I saw Cher in Netto the other day. Oh sorry my mistake it was actually a Gypsey, a tramp and a theif.

I actually said that I saw a fight in my local NETTO between two women. I also said that I couldn't see it it happening in Mark's and Spencers, which represented my own personal view, I didn't say that it would never happen in M&S.
I'm sure it has happened. I don't know if there is a NETTO where it hasn't happened, though.
I'm just glad there are shops nearby as with no car I find shopping quite a chore. I've used my local Lidl and on occasions a Netto shop and find a wide variety of customers do too, especially during the last petrol fiasco and the local shoppers turned up to find people filling 4X4s with all the milk and bread etc. and holding the queue up when paying by cheque.
At the end of the day we all get by don't we?

"But she wasn't being snobby about it" - erm, quote me on where I was being snobby because, maybe I'm blind but I sure as hell can't see it.
So no, can't think of any other reason.

Err excuse me, why have you brought me into it?

Nothing against you, just showing how fuzzy is singling me out and acting like I'm not qualified to judge the food. I'm sure a lot of the men have "wifey" to do it (and vice versa). Its just fuzzy singling me out that annoys me - so what if I don't do the shopping, I still have taste buds. I've also not made one snobby comment in this thread (most others have) yet fuzzy insists on making out that I have done. How can I ever change if even when I'm just trying to give light hearted thoughts on supermarkets I get accused of being snobby, despite having done nothing of the sort?

Sam Miguel 18-03-2004, 21:42 It's a fine line between stereotyping and being downright prejudiced.
Safeway at the bottom of Ecclesall Road ( where we go) is unbelievable. No-one speaks proper English, they are plain rude, they never acknowledge you
but the customers are even worse.
I remember us going into a supermarket in Spain. Man, it was filthy! Stuff strewn all over the floor, cardboard boxes, washing powder cartons burst open, dead dogs and cats laid out near where fresh food was in storage in unspeakable conditions.
Fed up, I went to see the manager. He approached me open-armed . I turned away from his puckering lips.
"Gerroff!" I stormed, well it was more like a light drizzle. I admit.
"Welcorrm my frenda to Espain, " he said in a nice trilling sort of way, and giving me a cosy little pat which almost broke my back at the same time.
He turned and pointed to the disarray of goods and things that, well, weren't so good:
"Wee do try to make you Eenglish feeel at home."
HarrietStar 19-03-2004, 14:02 i don't understand why people turn their nose up at nettos. I am really into cooking and food, and love trying new recipes with top ingrediants. unfortunatly, my budget doesn't always allow for this and i go to nettos for the basics. It is rubbish for meat and vegetables, but it does sell loads of big name brands including heinz. The big brands are more expensive than nettos own brand, but still cheaper than elsewhere. why spend 75p on a bottle of scwhepps (can't spell) lemonade when the ingrediants of nettos 15p lemonade are EXACTLY the same. and for things like bread, milk, free range eggs, frozen food, cans, why not pay less for the same product?
as the queues, absolute nightmare!
designbunny 19-03-2004, 15:58 When i was at Uni in Preston i lived across the road from Aldi + always shopped there, finding the food to be nice, good quality and on many occasions i’d find things like smoked cured ham - proper italian stuff, very tasty, that i wouldn’t have seen in safeway. They do alot of foreign foods, that are really nice.
Alot of the stuff doesn't work out that cheap anyway. Only the 7p can of beans, which when mixed with a bit of their brown sauce or tomato sauce they taste just as good or even better as heinz!

You haven't seeen the queues at Christmas time in M and S then!!! Full grown women fighting over turkeys!! :D
purplepippa 19-03-2004, 22:33 I do most of my shopping at the Co-op cos it's fairly ethical, and it's my closest shop which just makes life so much easier.
However I do go to Netto quite a bit and I love it there!
Like others have said, why pay twice as much elsewhere for exactly the same beer, beans, whatever.
And yes they haven't other brands that noone's heard of, but just cos noone's heard of them doesn't automatically make them crap!
The one I go to has a fair amount of fresh frfuit and veg but my problem there is that it tends to come in huge packs and i can't eat all those before they go off generally.
The prices are great, and charging for bags mean more people remember to take their own - a very big environmental advantage!
But my favourite thing *ever* is those middle aisles where there are just piles of anything and everything... it's so random, but totally great!
And yeah, I can't argue the M&S and Sainsbury's food can be really really good. But disability benefits don't tend to cover weekly shops there!!!
The odd treat though always goes down well ;)
Dunno what more to say really - I guess just don't knock it til you've tried it, and bear in mind that the places some of you are insulting are the *only* options for some people.
HarrietStar 19-03-2004, 22:49 the middle aisles are great!

As far as I'm aware, Netto don't sell big name brands like Heinz. I could stand to be corrected though, but I thought that was one of the reasons they were cheap.
Actually they sell LOADS of brand names.Have you ever benn to a netto or what?Maybe before people comment on what they do and dont sell at netto stores it may be a good idea to go to one and have a look for themselves. You tell me anywhere where you can get a Golden Wonder Pot Noodle for 39p eh.Now put that in ya pipe and smoke it !!loL (maybe not a good idea)
Captain_Scarlet 20-03-2004, 11:11 Netto on Queens Road sells Pepsi, Haribo, Nestlé and Heinz for example.

As mentioned, no, I haven't been in one before. I also stated that I stood to be corrected as I wasn't 100% sure since I've never been in one.
Come on T020 ... get out there into chav land:D You will have a blast! You could try starting out at the Aldi on Archer Rd.

Not when theres a Sainsbury's across the road.
TBH, Aldi is pretty good for pre-prepped continental foods. Better than Sainsbury, and a lot cheaper. Remember T020, it doesn't matter how much money you have, you can only spend it once!

Yes, it would. I thought someone would guess which one I meant.
Wearing a crash-helmet is a sensible idea. Once when I left the shop to go to my car, I noticed a group of around twelve people with yellow carrier bags admiring it. It was a 'D' reg Nissan Sunny.
I know I have posted this before, but that shop inspired me and prompted me to write this. I got it published as well!

Fired!
Shop Worker Sacked For Being Too Nice To customers!
Fifty-four year old Elsie Spatchcock is claiming unfair dismissal against her former employers, giant supermarket chain Grotto who she claims sacked her on her first day for being TOO NICE to customers.
“It’s just not fair,” she told us, “I was just trying to do my job.”
According to Grotto, Elsie was dismissed for ‘failing to comply with company policy’. “We have no complaints about Mrs Spatchcock’s work rate,” said a top Grotto boss, “but she failed to follow simple company regulations. She was told about strict company policy at her interview, but then she decided to ignore it.”
Apparently, Elsie had only been sitting at her till for half an hour when she received her first reprimand. Elsie takes up the story: “I only said good morning to a customer who was struggling to empty a trolley full of baked bean tins.
“I know the standard company greeting in these circumstances is: ‘come on we haven’t got all f***ing day’, but I just couldn’t bring myself to say it. The poor man looked so frail. I felt so sorry for him.”
Elsie was in further hot water when a fat lady wearing leggings and carpet slippers tried to pay for her brimming trolley with a five-pound note. Foolishly, Elsie gave her change instead of asking if she had anything less.
“I couldn’t believe it when I got my first warning just two hours into my new job!”
Elsie was finally relieved of her position twenty minutes before closing time on her first and last day when an unshaven middle aged man came in for a case of vodka and some dog food. “Instead of saying ‘haven’t you got a home to go to?’ and telling him to ‘p*** off’, like a fool I served him.
A spokesman for Grotto said yesterday: “We are proud of our reputation and we don’t want it damaged, so go and jump in the bleedin’ lake."

OK, you've lost me now. Caprice pointed out that it was an intended spelling mistake, or a 'pun', if you will. She is correct. How is that a difference in our points of *view*? Also, I did answer, and I am doing so again now.
Captain_Scarlet 21-03-2004, 00:41 How should i know that what Caprice said was true?
All i was waiting for is your output on this.
Chill man.

I live next to the place  Even though it's the closest shop to my house I regularly walk straight past it and up onto Shoreham Street :) Either that or the Co-op on Heeley........ Anything but Netto.
