I was brought up with Boxer Dogs and I absolutely love them and would like to buy one in the near future.

However, myself and my partner do work during the day.

There is no doubt we can take the Boxer for a run in the morning (for around 60 mins) and at night and also at lunch time.

Would this be cruel to leave the boxer alone during the morning and afternoon or if I provide enough stimulus, i.e. dog toys etc would he/she be ok?

I do have friends who have various breeds of dog that quite happily spend the day sleeping, but I am not very clued up whether the Boxer can tolerate much time alone (growing up my mother was aways around).

Any feedback would be deeply appreciated.

Having had boxers for 20 odd years i really dont think it would be adviseable to leave a boxer for any length of time on its own, especially a pup.Young boxers tend to be quite destructive when left to there own devises for to long, even an hours walk or run 2 or 3 times a day is not quite enough to satisfy the pup enough to tire it out. Also boxers are very inteligent and need a lot work to keep there inqizitive minds occupied. This by the way is my own personel experiance and doesnt come out of a book or training school. My advise would be to research the breed and from that come to youre own conclusions as to wether you want to go ahead and get a boxer puppy.Hope this helps.

I have a boxer, we got her when I worked shifts - so there was usually someone in the house with her. Even still, she managed to eat my bed, a couch, a carpet, most of my car boot and anything else lying around. You could have walked her all day long, but leave her alone for any time at all and she went mental.

so yes, boxers can tend to be destructive - or have separation anxiety.

Now I work normal hours and she's fine - its just that puppy stage that was the problem.

I would strongly recommend that no pup is left on it's own for any length of time, at least not until at least 6 months old (later for some breeds).

If you do get a boxer, perhaps a rehomed dog would suit you better? Contact breeders in the usual way, as reputable breeders will always take their own dogs back if their home circumstances change, so you may get a young dog who is the victim of divorce, illness or unemployment.

Another thing to consider is having 2. No, don't laugh. They will keep each other company.

And please consider crate training. It's the safest environment to leave a boistrous or destructive dog in. Brude loves his crate, and can often be found in it with the door open, enjoying 40 winks in peace away from us :)

boxers are very sociable and dont usually cope on their own. i have a male boxer, hes just over 2yrs now, and when ever i leave him him in the house, he has the annoying habit of trying to open doors, and lol, scratches the wood work, and walls in the process...

im seriously considering crate training, but have a lot of concerns..
