It's a subjective question but I think Baan Thai at the bottom of London Road (Actually addressed as Ecesall Road I think) is rather good. I've heard other people say similar.

Baan Thai is good but I think All Siam at Hunters Bar has the edge.

We must have gone on a bad day then. The restaurant itself is beautiful inside but the food tasted awful. Haven't dared go back to see if it was a one off.

After visiting all of Sheffield restaurants, and spending a month in Thailand, I say Thai Punna and Baan Thai, both on London Rd are the best for food, service and atmosphere. Thai Punna wins for me!

The Thai Orchid further up is the worst food I have ever tasted....microwaved rice! :gag:

How do you microwave rice?!

I've travelled Thailand and SE Asia extensively and would say the Orchid (previously the Siam Inter) is the most authentic in Sheffield for food. Not quite as pleasant decor as the others, but for food alone it wins every time.

I saw them put cooked rice into a bowl, then put it into the microwave. They then turned it out onto a plate and gave it to me, to my utter disgust!

I too have travelled to Thailand and I thought the food was as poor as can be at the Orchid!

Been to all mentioned so far except Thai Punna tbh. All Siam is a class above the others. We've taken friends to a few of these places as well and that's a unanimous verdict. We tried Patoo recently - it's okay - nothing special. The Travellers at Holmesfield is good I agree - but still not of the quality of All Siam.

We like our Thai food and used to travel up to Leeds to go to Chao praya - which is really excellent as well. But since All Siam opened we would go there every time now. Hope it keeps it's standards up - if you haven't tried it then you really should. Only criticism here is that it's small and cramped, but nicely done out inside all the same.

I went to Patoo on Ecclesall Road last week which was rather nice

I always liked the All Siam at Hunters Bar, but I can't recommend it any more. I went tonight and the menu now has a sticker on each page saying the prices don't include VAT.

This is the same menu they had on my last visit in February this year when VAT was included in the prices. That means that they have raised their prices by a whopping 20% in the last six months.

They were always a bit expensive, but with this extra 20% on top their prices are just ridiculous and I won't be going again.

So of the other Thai restaurants, the Bann Thai is very good, but I think my favourite is Thai Punna on London Road, which has the best food and is also a bit cheaper :)

I'll have me beans and toast instead because sheffield has been yearning for a good restaurant for decades. No offensive anyone but we need a good restaurant in Town

If that's right that they have raised their prices by 20% I agree with you that is a big hike. I think it's a sign of the times as well isn't it?

The question for me would be this...

Are the prices still within a reasonable range that I'm happy to pay for this quality of food?

Because, in my view, the quality of Thai food at All Siam, is/was a cut above any of the others we've tried in this city. I don't know off the top of my head what a main course at All Siam costs, for example. But I'd be comparing that to the cost of a main course in a similar quality establishment in coming to a decision as to whether it is still value for money.

Do you normally leave a tip for service? I do, unless the service has been poor. I would normally tip around 10% depending on the size of the bill. So another option you have is to reduce your tip accordingly, or not tip at all if you think the service didn't justify it.

But I don't share the view that just because the prices have gone up I would automatically boycott this place and go somewhere else.

If that somewhere else was as good as All Siam why go to All Siam in preference in the first place?

Exactly.

I don't think the price is justified now. They were already a bit expensive, but I was willing to pay that because it's a good restaurant. Now they have increased their prices by 20% they have become too expensive for the quality.

As I said before, Thai Punna on London Road always serve delicious food and I'll be going there in future.

none of the ones I've tried are any good really. Thai food is always pretty disappointing outside Thailand, it's not the same and a lot of the dishes are missing from the menus - not being stupid, they tailor the dishes to suit the western clientele. You'd never know from visiting Thai restaraunts in the west that a lot of Thais normally eat their food with their hands as well as spoon and fork and sometimes chopsticks. Thai food is also expensive in the UK. Even though it costs pretty much the same to make as Indian food, because it's perceived as being that bit more 'exotic', they can charge a 20% premium. Same goes for Indian food in Thailand actually - it's also expensive.
