In contrast to the other post on worst remakes ever....what do people think are the best remakes?

For me it's The Thing. Loved it, saw more of the Alien, better insight to characters etc.

Gone in sixty Seconds.

Great first time round, but an excellent remake as well.

Also, I loved Heat. Not sure it was any better than LA Takedown but the top quality actors did an excellent job as always. I didn't think Oceans Eleven was too bad either.

Yes, I mentioned this in my Worst Movie Remkes post a few weeks back because I don't expect this to be any good. Call me cynical but I think they have done as much as they can with it and will not improve it no matter how they try.

Mission Impossible 2 was a vast improvement from Mission Impossible 1 IMO, something to do with the director perhaps?

The Fly - Great film

12 Angry Men

Lord of the rings - should be allowed

Little Shop of Horrors

Oceans 11 - mentioned already

I'd agree with The Fly, also...

City Of Angels (vs Wings Of Desire). Both excellent, but they chose a different route so allowing them to explore different sides of the same plot.

My Father The Hero was of the same standard as Mon Père Ce Héro.

Lord Of The Rings of course (if going from animation to real life counts).

I don't generally like remakes. but Heat I can watch and watch again. However, I can also watch the original over and over.
Manhunter was brilliant with Wm. Petersen and has not been bettered.( Red Dragon was remake)

The Fly was excellent.

There are not many films that are worth remaking and why dont they spend the money on something original.

Reasons for remakes include translation (some people don't like a film in another language) or updating (e.g. improvements in special effects such as for the fly).

Most of the time it doesn't work well, be there are times when it does. Normally because someone tries to remove originality or subtlety to make something more 'mainstream' (thinks La Femme Nikita -> Assassin).

Best remakes?! Dunno if you can call them "remakes" per se, but I'd say the Star Wars special editions are pretty good, apart from the Empire Strikes Back one.
