View Full Version : St Patrick's Day 2004
uncleheed 12-03-2004, 20:45 Is anyone else as pi$$sed off as me as all this St Patricks cobblers?Town are having a St Patricks festival for the next five days.TV will be full of ads for it,and radio stations will be hammering Van Morrison and U2 like mad.
What I wish to know is are we going to have a St Georges festival and 'English' artists played on radio from the 20th April?
If you didn't know,(because no one mentions it),St Georges day is on 23rd April. Also this is the birthday of one of the greatest ever Englishman,William Shakespeare.
5 days you say?
does this mean tomorrow?
Nowt wrong with a bit of VanMorrison ;)
Id like to celebrate StGeorges day in some way, but id prolly get called a racist or something :loopy:
bulldog D 12-03-2004, 21:09 St Georgewas an upper class snob who spent all day chasing dragons 'cos foxes hadn't been invented. So he was boring!
However St Pat was a Guinnness swilling colcannon eater, who liked nothing more
than a Ceili with the boys in the shebeen, one day he was so smashed he climbed to the top of Croagh Patrick and kicked all the snakes out of Ireland for a giggle!
TOP BLOKE!!!!!!!!!
Why does William Shakespeare sound half red indian?
if he was proper English he should have been called Farquharson
was shakespeare his stage name?
uncleheed 12-03-2004, 21:11 bulldog you are an idiot sir,or you are not a true Englishman

I've got the best of both worlds I'm English with a sense of humour and irony.
uncleheed 12-03-2004, 21:20 thats funny is it?I'm glad to hear you would sooner be a paddy than English, they can have you

I'm sure they would especially those gorgeous looking dark haired colleens who'd all be shouting Cead Mile Failte, thats gaelic by the way.
noseyrosie 12-03-2004, 23:10 There's a lot of celebration of english culture (As in traditional, i nthe sense that St georges day should represent) everywhere, it's just sad that mainstream culture has rejected it in favour of football hooliganism and clubbing. Anyway, I'm going to start a thread on it now!
We can't celebrate St Georges day as the English aren't allowed to be patriotic in their own country (or anywhere else for that matter) - who knows who it could 'offend'. If you're Welsh, Scottish or Irish though, GO FOR IT!
i dont need st patricks day to drink guinesss.........................i do it all the time .........hic lol:thumbsup:
mr craig 13-03-2004, 06:22 Well i'll definatly be having a couple of pints of the black stuff.I really can't see the harm in having a bit of a knee's up,so what if he wasn't english, its a good excuse to have some fun!! I've been to Dublin a couple of times on St Partricks day and had a great time!!
I would really love to be able to celebrate St Georges day in the same way but seen as 1.We dont get the day off and 2.We'd get called racist by all the lefty idiots i'm afriad its not possible. :(
imo the reason we don't celebrate St G's day is because nobody will organise it. It's nothing to do with being called racist or the fact that St G wasn't even English it's just apathy.
If all you people spouting off about lefties and do-gooders got off your arses and did something yourselves then, who knows, in a few years time it could be a national holiday.

Van Morrison is actually from Northern Ireland, so technically he is British, but I know what you mean.
Had a nice pint of Guiness in the Dog and Partridge on Thursday.

Um.... calling Irish people Paddies is racist.
Therefore you're being just as bad as wot you're complaining to him about.
carsondaly 13-03-2004, 11:55 The thing I'm ****** about is having to pay £2 into that tent thing outside Virgin. I looked in last night at about 8.30 and there didn't seem to be anyone in there. The bouncers look a bit scary as well.
Paddies are friendly, welcoming and proud people.
What part of that statement is racist, when lots of Irish folk have the nickname Paddy, and are quite proud to use it?
I'm pleased that the Irish like to celebrate their day and good luck to them but we should have the opportunity to celebrate our own day.
tslogf74 14-03-2004, 09:54 ahh.. the alternate thread. I assume you've all been here. http://www.sheffieldforum.com/showthread.php?s=&threadid=8344
Well, I for one always celebrate St. Patricks Day.
I like Guinness, I fancy three-quarters of the Corrs.... and, most importantly, the 17th of March is the anniversary of my birth.
So there.
To be honest, i don't think it's anything to do with patriotism or racism, It's just the fact that guinness have marketed it so well, that its become big. Unfortunately there's no really good english ale big enough to market a St. Georges day celebration. I really think that if St Georges day was done well, then we would too, have a celebration. I don't think anyone seriously, would complain that it's racist.

I know what, why don't we have forum meet up on the night of St Georges Day and we can hold our very own little celebration. Who knows, we could even start a trend here and St Georges day could become as big as St Patricks day
Is there anywhere Irish we can go tommorrow night where there will be food as well? Does anyone know if, say, the Dog and Partridge will have any scoff on? Ta!
thegayguide 16-03-2004, 15:56 There's a rather large tent at the top of Fargate, been there all last week as part of Hogshead Irish Festival. Lot's of Irish music on tonight/tomorrow. Dont know about food, but I doubt very much if they will be doing any food at the Dog tomorow night.

I thought he was from Palestine.
St.Patrick wasn't Irish though.
pontious 16-03-2004, 18:11 I love St Pats day as the irish know how to celebrate, for the Irish its not about jingoistic nationalism, its about having a good p*ss up!
Me'self personally, I'd rather celebrate 1st August....Yorkshire day, as I am a Yorkshireman first and formost!!
garrence 16-03-2004, 18:16 St George was a liar too. Claiming he slayed a dragon n all.
Is it actually possible for a pub to get a late license on St George's day? (Classic Rock?)
The only English ale which uses St Georges day in it's marketing is Bombardier Bitter, using the strap line 'England's patron pint'. However this beer tends to be found mainly down South.
Only St George's day event I've seen advertised round here is a beer festival at the pub at Worksop station.
Anyway, this thread is about St Patricks. Why not celebrate our Irish neighbours, and after all, there are many Irish people living here now. At the end of the day it's an excuse for a party.
It would be nice if we could drink proper quality Irish beer at these dos though, rather than Guinness that has been brewed under licence in a factory in London! - it's never seen Ireland!
We don't complain when hotels and pubs in England celebrate Burns night, why St Patricks?
Do agree we need to celebrate St Georges better.
whats wrong with St Patricks day? Its the English stiff upper lip that stops us enjoying St Georges day, we cant be seen to be enjoying ourselves, its just not cricket; but the Irish, the lovable, sweet Irish know how to enjoy themselves on their patron saints day.
There are lots of great English men that are worthy of celebration like Brunel,Stephenson,Drake,Nelson the list is endless.
All I can say to the author tittyheed is, go and enjoy St Patricks day dont decry it.
Id certainly celebrate an Isambard Kingdom Brunel day :D :D :D
100% agree there RPG, THE GREATEST BRITON WHO EVER LIVED.
Hope his being of French descent doesn't make him illegible!
Mind you, as already pointed out elsewhere, St Patrick wasn't Irish, and St George wasn't English.
But what the hell, we salute the Queen who isn't even British.
What the hell (again), "HAIL ST ISAMBARD", at least we know he was real AND a hero  :partyhat:
I think most people these days see St. George as a bit of a joke. Are we really expected to believe that this guy killed a dragon???
Aren't you supposed to wear green or something for St Patricks Day? 8)

As far as I know being of French descent doesn't make you indecipherable - although I suppose the French accent could make him unintelligible :)

Like St Paddy really kicked all the snakes out of Ireland? ;)
I think St Paddy's has been adopted worldwide as the patron saint of getting ******... no problem with celebrating that!
