I always thought Squirrels hibernated in the winter months as I don't tend to see them around at this time of the year.... funny thing is I opened my bedroom window this morning ( I live in a ground floor flat ) and when I walked back in a Squirrel was sitting on my window sill.... and dead cute it was too.... my Cat has learned to leave them alone.... The Squirrels are quite tame where I live as the residents look after them so I bought a big bag of nuts when I went shopping this morning and they are now everywhere.... Did I wake em up?:D

it amazes me how you see them burrying nuts and weeks later when its cold and foods sacrce, they know where they have buried them, the only problem with them coming so close to the house is if they get inside they can cause a lot of damage, especially if they get in the false roof/loft:gag:

I seem to remember reading that squirrels don't hibernate - or maybe it was just grey ones that don't. Anyway, I don't encourage them because they dig all your bulbs up & eat them, but they are cute!

The little buggers have dug most of my pots/tubs up on the back garden, but it's my fault for putting nuts out for the birds

They are cute though.

We had one that made a nest in our attic. We blocked the hole but it kept coming back and it chewed up all our insulation and through some roof struts - cost me £500 to get it sorted. But I must admit they are still weirdly relaxing to watch when they are messing about in the garden!

Apparently, squirrel is supposed to be pretty tasty. I saw a programme where they made squirrel burgers. Anyway, I thought they only stored food during the winter months and did not hibernate.

Squirrels (or at least the varieties of squirrel found in the UK) don't hibernate. They aren't as active in the winter as they are at other times of year but they still wake in the morning and go to sleep at night and in order to survive a winter they need to eat about three thousand nuts (about thirty a day). The time of year squirrels find most difficult is summer because by then they have eaten most of the nuts they buried in autumn.

They are so not cute. They kill and eat cute fluffy little baby birds. Keep feeding them the nuts it might save the birds

I didn't know that either!

We have a squirrel in our garden called Freddie, I haven't seen him for a few weeks, we actually had the hibernation discussion in my house last week :P Hope he hasn't gone away on a mad bird killing spree; that is so like him

I've read an interesting article about the research done on squirrels and hiding nuts.

It would appear that they do not remember where they buried/hid their nuts!

It is more a case of so many nuts being buried by so many squirrels that they are able to find some by smell when they go looking for a snack.

some yrs ago when the garage at malin bridge was open, there was a group of squirrels there and they used to sit on the wall outside whilst one went in and pinched chocs off the counter:D

If this is the case, and I was a squirrel (which I'm not if you're wondering) then I wouldn't bury any nuts and just eat other squirrels nuts :D

We have had quite a few squirrels resident near us, we loved to watch their antics, but recently the trees they used have been lopped down to next to nothing and they seem to have moved on. What a pity.:(

As I previously mentioned, they should kill the little sods off and make em into burgers then re-introduce the native Red Squirrel to every woodland where the Grey has pushed them out. Red Squirrels are far nicer than the Grey and they aren't as evil too.
