Having lived in Fir Vale all my life i am glad that something is finally being done to boost the credibility of the area. After a decade of decline surely the annoyingly slow revamp of the area can only be a good thing. Earl Marshal School which is now Fir Vale Community School has made a radical change since the new buildings were built! having been officially opened by none other than the Queen, the pass rates for qualifications have trebled & people are now wanting to get in and there are not enough places!! Whereas, a few years before the old building was knocked down, it was the total opposite.

I am glad that the old flats just off Earl Marshal Road are gone, they were only used by drug-dealers and misfits. Also, does anybody know what is to become of the Cannon Hall Pub?? and the land next to it which used to house the ESSO petrol station?

Upwell Street is still in bad condition and the whole area would have to go to make improvements around there.
Its a mixture of suburbia and industrial eyesore but the 2 pubs should remain.

I agree with you Panda, but since the flats started going down the atmosphere has changed. I remember when the Cannon Hall Pub was sold on it became a gangland paradise, you could guarantee on sunday morning's the car park would be full of dealers like a market day.
Hopefully it will be demolished and something abit more useful can be built using the spare land next to it.

Does anybody remember the old football pitches at Earl Marshal?... At first there was the concreted land and a small banking which people could sit on, then a big new 5-a-side football pitch was built to go with the new sports centre, surrounded by walls with huge floodlights. I remember someone told me that the only reason they didn't cover the pitch with astro-turf was because some vandals burnt it all in it's wooden store next to the pitch.
Anyway, i whiled away many happy hours of football on the green (sprayed concrete) astro.
There was a footpath all the way around leading from Skinnerthorpe Road upto Earl Marshal Road. It's all been fenced off now and the path covered by a grass banking. Unless you're paying you cant get in and now have to walk either up Skinnerthorpe or Barnsley road to get through to Earl Marshal Road!!

Yep I went to Earl Marshal / Fir Vale. I was in the year before the new head teacher started. Great years, wouldn't change them for the world!! I'm quite proud of the fact I went to the worst school in England for a while, and got into uni ... which many teachers said we would never do!!!

The reason why my year got so crap results, was because half the pupils couldn't speak English very well, nevermind take any exams in it!!! The school gave them a chance to get qualifications, and in a way they were punished for it.

3 in 10 kids at most schools nowadays can't speak fluent English - seems like that when I've tried talking to them anyway :)

Is that the national average or just for that school?

Actucally many were born in this country, but their first language wasn't English as their parents couldn't speak it. So they weren't classed under any headings like 'asylum seekers', as they were British Citizens.

Maybe not, but the mixed community life is so much more interesting and livelier than that of other places in Sheffield. For instance Dore maybe a nice, upper class area to live in but the people up there keep themselves to themselves and although it may be nice to look at there is about as much atmosphere as you’d get at an autopsy.

The mixture of different communities, languages, foods, shops etc makes Fir Vale a better place. With all the work going on as well, it should become an area of Sheffield to be proud of.

My mate used to lived in Dore, and experienced much more crime than me, like his car being stolen etc. So its the luck of the draw, wherever you live!
