Does anyone know of any fuit and veg box schemes based in Sheffield?
I'm doing some research as part of a university project and could do with visiting them!

Any thoughts, please let me know!

Beanies on Crookes Valley Road for one. It's very good too!

Banana Bob's in Meersbrook deliver boxes of fruit and veg (organic or non-organic) to your door. You can tell Mr Bob what kind of things you like, and he brings it round in the evening. Dead good!

I called in once to enquire, but was told he only delivered to that side of the city.

He didn't seem to have much organic stuff on offer either but kept saying he could get it.

The choice of fruit was very basic too.

Organic stuff is expensive to have on the shelf.

I used to work in New Roots on Glossop Rd - Oh yes! they do boxes too if you ask them!! (my brain's not in gear today). New Roots is great by the way and run solely by volunteers, so well worth supporting.

Anyhoo, a lot of the time, smaller shops will buy organic stuff in to order , so if you order a box from them regularly, they'll buy stuff in for you. They don't keep the fruit and veg in the shop as it may not sell and will lose them money.

I always get a very interesting selection of veg (I don't eat fruit :gag: ) from Banana Bob with things like celeriac, squash, fennel etc etc. Tis v nice.

thanks, will have to check them out.

By the way, what do you think of organic box schemes? I'm interested in changing the way we shop and boycotting supermarkets and supporting local businesses instead. Do you think locally grown and delivered vegetables would work for an urban community? Or are we all to used to relying on supermarkets too much?

Have a look at the Sheffield Green Guide (free from Beanies), like a yellow folding map thingy, and also in the directory at the back of the Ecologist magazine (monthly). They list some but it's not exhaustive.

Yes I think we are

I order freshly caught fish from a company in Grimsby who deliver to sheffield within 2/3 days of you phoning an order in.

The quality is as good as or better than Waitrose (where my sister is a supervisor on the fish counter) and its a fraction of the cost!

We tried Z's, but weren't impressed. What use are two potatoes for a week? We now get a box from banana bob and are happy with that - sensible quanties and good quality. Bob's very helpful and friendly, just tell him what you like and don't like and he'll work round that.

Organic boxes are expensive. A great idea if you can afford them though.

Buying boxed veg is great for me because it *makes* me eat veg. I've had to be more inventive in my cooking to use it all up each week and have tried lots of new things.

Boycot the big supermarkets if you can, I reckon. If nothing else, it makes you go out and find other shops and makes you more adventurous in your eating habits! Once you get to know people in smaller shops, it make you feel all 'part of the community' -fab!

Debk,

Do u have a contact number for this ? Can u please pm me ? I'd be interested to know for my family. Well, prob more for my mom.

I often wondered whether there are any decent fish mongers in Sheffield. I once searched on Yell and didn't come up with very many. Interestingly though, from chatting to a waitress at BB's, they get their fish from a local fishmonger in Hillsborough !

And if you can't ?

A better idea is to try and grow some veg yourself, a couple of grow bags on the back garden will keep you in cucumbers, tomaotes and peppers all summer, and cost next to nothing.

Also incredibly easy to grow are lettuce, spring onions, radishes and most herbs.

I can't understand why organic veg cost so much.

I think they are just cashing in.

Good point. Even I managed to grow some veg last year - and I'm exceedingly poo at gardening.

All very well suggesting we "boycott" supermarkets, some of us have no choice. Both me and my other half work full time so have limited time to shop; therefore have little choice but to go to supermarkets. Whether you like it or not supermarkets have it all there - have to admit though although some stuff is cheap their fruit and veg is really dear; and often crap. Would love to shop local, but sadly don't have the time... I live near Banana Bob so might give him a go - a mate mentioned that it's a bit hit and miss with what you get...
