Hello there

I'm getting rid of the carpet from the downstairs of my house this week. I was wondering if there was any good use for it, or whether I should just take it to the tip?

Do they recycle carpets at the tip?

It's not in great nick, but I feel bad about chucking stuff out that might be useful :)

Thanks, Chicken Monkey x

Do you have a local allotment near by.I had old carpet one time out side my house waiting for it to be moved. And i got some guy askin if he could take it for his allotment.I not too sure why they use it but i know they place it the allotment plots for somereason.Maybe take it there and see if anyone could use it.

Oh yeah!

I think they use it for covering the ground in winter to stop pesky weeds.

I will investigate...

You could advertise it on the Sheffield Freecycle site. People often ask for old carpet for allotments.

always in demand for weedkilling purposes - problem with it is it rots so fresh carpet is always in demand, as are plastic drink bottles (big ones) - make great shelters for young plants.

Better than them going to landfill.

Thanks peeps.

If anyone has an allotment and wants it, PM me.

I've also been told that Remar UK and St Vincent's de Paul take old carpets, so am following this up.

St Vincents take most furniture for distribution to the homeless, if anyone has furniture they no longer want, by the way.

Thanks again for all the good advice,

I will happily take old carpet off your hands - for free.

Carpets have plenty of uses and if you e-mail me (cuthbert[at]riseup[dot]net) then i am sure i can find a use for your carpet.

If its woollen carpet they dig it into the ground and as it rots it breaks up the soil and fertilises it at the same time

Or... use it to soundproof your garage and buy a drumkit?

Long as it's clean, it's great stuff for insulating the loft space in terraced house attic rooms, fix it up under the rafters - lots less noise and more heat retained.

Or if you have a cat, cut some old strips off and make him a cat scratch pole or two. Also people with caravans often appreciate some carpet, they can cut off any rough bits and use the good stuff to recarpet their van. And I've known people use old carpet to make their sheds more homely...

It also makes good compost as has been said by artisan.

Not Mam Tor though. You would die. :o

You could always use it to make a den in the garden with some old boxes for sides and carpet for a roof. Nick the clothes horse from inside and use it as a joist. :D

Make yourself an outfit out of it. It'd be great for the winter months, and you could lay down on the floor during hide and seek games disguised as a rug!

Has anyone else carpeted their garage? Beats laying on a cold concrete floor to do car repairs...

Ours is carpeted. It has a slab floor, then slats and a decent thick tongue and groove wood covering, then carpet on top of that. It is however for his precious Fireblade.

I find that cut into small squares it makes a delicious and nutricious snack that's very high in fibre

Thanks for the suggestions. I particularly liked the snack idea and may try it when I get home.

I have rolled in said carpet. It was very fun.

Luckily Cuthbert is going to pick up the carpet before I get into any more mischief.

Ta Cuthbert
