Sheffield has been pronouced as the Internet Capital of the UK. Apparently there are more people online in Sheffield than anywhere else in the UK. Also Sheffield people spend 3 times more time on the internet than they do in London.

How about that for a statement - I heard this on the 8.30am news on Magic Am today.

Maybe Sheffielders are curious creatures who love to research and learn things and what better way than a virtual library at your fingertips?

It's good news for the council, who have been trying to promote creative & digital industries in the Cultural Industries Quarter; and good news for the forthcoming ECampus that is planned to go where the bus station is now.

If that's the case, how comes hardly anyone in Sheffield can get Broadband?

And no, I am not just bitching about the lack of availability in Stannington, although that does suck.

Is that because everyone works in call centres or for the government or Home office and has wayyyyy too much time on their hands at work? :P

Perhaps they don't even realise the telephone network exists north of Watford?

I didn't get the impression from the snippet that I heard that they had distringuished between dialup and broadband they only referred to the number of population online.

Has anyone else heard this report?

The response in the office I work was "Just shows how much more intelligent we are up here then doesn't it"

I'm guessing here, perhaps the words "on the tube" were missing.

Can I just say that Stannington DOES have broadband, well at least a good part of it does. I have Freeserve ASDL and its superb, despite apparently being slightly out of range of the exchange.

sorry to dwell on this but freeserve are a bag of nails (my opinion and not the nations view) and by that same token, they are little better than the plague of italian-originated locusts that have swarmed us, by means of Tiscali.

However i would like to honestly believe that the added use of internet per household (scaled to size) is greater here than any other location in the UK, but again IMHO i can put this down to one thing only. DOWNLOADS. Downloads ARE the future, legitimate or illegitimate. This may well be a bone of contention with all you 'honest' folk that go down to record stores and video shops. i salute your honesty. I,however, alike the bulk of students who subscribe/subscribed to broadband services in the region of Sheffield - have procured 1000's of MP3s and 100's of the latest movie releases. This does however take time and that means long hours of continual net downloads.

I should point out, for legal purposes, that downloading MP3s, DivX movies, and the like.........is illegal and is classed as piracy under the laws of the land.

That's probably the reason why people in Sheffield spend longer on the net, they have to wait 3 times as long for the info.
