View Full Version : Help! - my computer won't un-hibernate!!
I was working away quite happily, when I managed to run my chair castor into the reset button on the front of my computer.
It briefly informed me that it was planning to hibernate, and asked me if I thought that was a good idea whilst connected to the server, before it made it's own decision and closed down anyway
Now it's quite happy to show me it's LEDs when I try to reboot, but it won't show me anything on the monitor
Any ideas? :(
neeeeeeeeeek 16-01-2006, 16:20 If pressing everthing including the power button won't wake it then you have no choice, hold the power button in for 5-10 seconds and it should switch off, else pull the cable out the back. It will most likley run scan disk on restart but other than that it should be fine.
Neither of those worked Neeeeeeeeeek :(
Have you wedged the button? If so, you may need to take the case off to free it up.
Nope, Max. Both the reset and the power button work fine - mechanically. Pressing the power button begins the usual sequence of flashing llights - sometimes. Sometimes it attempts to read the floppy drives and sometimes not, but the hard drive light and the power light come on.
Come to think..... The hard drive light stays on constant
melthebell 16-01-2006, 17:49 you may have to go into the bios / setup and change something if theres anything to do with hibernating?
That would be sooooo much easier if I could wake it up to get into the bios ;)
neeeeeeeeeek 17-01-2006, 10:01 So you have switched it off at the wall and it does not come back on??
Sounds like its crackered!
Oh, and the network can't see it either

Well it's LEDs come on, and its fan whirrs, and it tests to see if it has a disk in the drawer, but apart from that.... :(
Can we boot it from CD?
Does anything come up on the screen at all?
Nope, and the monitor LED keeps flashing as though it's still sleeping
How hard did you hit it?
Perhaps you knocked something loose inside. Can you open it up to check the cables?
Another thing you could try is locate the bios clear CMOS jumpers on your motherboard and try resetting your bios. Could be tricky if you don't have a manual or don't know what to look for though.
neeeeeeeeeek 17-01-2006, 10:17 When you press the caps lock and num lock keys do the lights go on and off? if not then it needs help! It's not a hibernating issue, it's broken.
Most likely the system board, possibly the processor. usually if the RAM fails it will beep at you.
What type of compuiter is it? a home made one or a branded one? It's not a Dell is it??

Eeeek! too technical (I think I'll wait 'til my more-techy colleague returns on wed)
It could be something loose, as I did run into it with my chair

The caps and numbers lock are sulking too :(
It was running really slow for ages, and it was due to be fed more memory - which had arrived in the office less than an hour before I killed the host machine.
neeeeeeeeeek 17-01-2006, 10:27 Oh well, if it's a work computer then I would not worry about it :) won't cost you anything.
:D
If only I worked for a huge conglomerate though.....
Small businesses feel the sting for that far harder :(
neeeeeeeeeek 17-01-2006, 10:45 Ah well. get your techie to takle the side off it, reseat everything and try it again.
:)
commuter 19-01-2006, 11:29 if it beeps while trying to boot up there are set patterns of beeps e.g. 1 long, 2 short, 1 long and 2 short etc which help identify the problem, try googling from another pc for bios beeps[URL=http://www.pchell.com/hardware/beepcodes.shtml]
Try this it might help identify the problem.
I assume no beep at all means it's dead? ;)
beansforyou 19-01-2006, 15:16 You sure it's not just the monitor thats hibernating?
have you tried switching it on and off?
It doesn't beep on attempted booting, so I don't think it is the monitor
Did it beep before? Mine doesn't if nothing is wrong but some give a single bleep as they start up.
beansforyou 19-01-2006, 21:06 Mine doesnt beep on start up when everything is ok, thats why I wondered about the monitor, because maybe the pc is starting up ok but if the monitors switched itself off you would think it was kaputt.
