As some of you might know I am renowned on here for my pointless knowledge of past Sheffield United exploits, this is mainly down to my youthful age :hihi: despite decades of following United home and away.....anyway I just thought I would share a couple of boring stats with you today and possibly every now and again after matches to see if any of the are of any interest to you.

Tic-Tac-Toe.... To find the last time United won 3 opening league games on the trot you would have to venture back to the 1983 / 1984 season in the Canon Third Division where we beat Gillingham 4-0 on the opening day and then Lincoln 2-0 and Walsall (coincidence) 2-1. In the same season we also beat Bradford City in the 1st round of the league cup as we have done Hartlepool this year.

We went on to finish this season 3rd behind Oxford and Wimbledon securing promotion to the 2nd Division.

Tic-Tac-Toe - And another one.... Should The Blades be good enough to win this Saturday's extremely tough game against Tranmere you would have to go all the way back to the 1971 / 1972 season since we last achieved such a feat of winning our 1st 4 opening league fixtures. We started this season by beating Southampton 3-1, Leeds 3-0, Everton 1-0 and Arsenal 1-0.

Despite winning 8 and drawing 2 of our opening 10 fixtures in this season we went on to finish a disappointing 10th.

A Good Start For A Gaffer...... The last manager to achieve the success of winning their first three league games in a row as Blades gaffer was not all that far away and no other than Neil Warnock, he actually won his first four beating Portsmouth 1-0, Blackburn 2-1, Birmingham 2-0 and Fulham 2-0, therefore Wilson needs to beat Tranmere on Saturday if he fancies a pop at beating / matching this.

Someone pulled these stats out on another forum last week when we got the dizzy heights of 2 wins in a row :D

I'll C&P what he put.

....not something we do that often - in fact, before this season only 9 times in the last fifty years:

1965-66
1969-70
1971-72
1980-81
1983-84
1985-86
1988-89
1989-90
2005-06.

Interesting that 4 of those seasons were in a 7 year period in the mid to late 80's and people will note that the last 3 times we did it we got promotion (and managed to get relegated in 1980-81!).

We got 3rd wins in 1969-70, 1971-72, 1980-81 and 1983-84 and went on to a 4th win in 1971-72. Our record number of wins from the start of the season is 8 in 1903-04.

We don't want to get carried away but I am getting rather excited at the prospect of beating Tranmere and Yeovil, I had £20 for us to win our first five league games and took 80/1.
Whatever happens I have had a run for my money.

It will be a laugh either way, if the bet goes down the usual suspects will be on gloating, you know the ones those who know better but backed wednesday to win the league.:hihi::hihi:.

Wednesday are drifting further than a rubber dinghy in the north sea.

Can't believe that match is 40 years ago this month. Eddie Colquhoun was superb that night.
