View Full Version : Reading group....girls wanna start one??
roisin94 15-01-2006, 19:07 hey
any girls aged 18-24 want to start a reading group with me??
i've got a few people interested at present but need some more to make it work
i live city centre so can do it at my place to start with
v informal, thinking of more of a drunken get together to gossip with wine and talk about recent reads etc
let me know girlies!!!
btw i'm a 21 yr old female student nurse, just to make sure u know i'm not some sleazy old man trying to trick girls!!! hehe!! thought i'd just make that clear!

Just thought you might like to know that there are already a couple of groups that meet at the Red Deer near West Street tram stop, if you want to check out their website.
goldenturkey 16-01-2006, 18:02 First off I'm a guy, though I don't have a problem with it, but just wondered if you were set on a female-only thing or you would consider mixing?
If not, anyone know of any mixed groups or writing groups?
CHRIS
I'm 27 rather than 18-24. does that matter? have tried a couple of reading groups before but found them too formal.
and ... what r u gonna read???
I pm'd about this but no reply! must be either too old (25 haha) or my reading lists not up to scratch!! ( said i didnt read anything too heavy and liked a good light hearted novel.
weenireeni 21-01-2006, 11:30 hi i love reading, so if anyone can provide any more details on reading groups, id be really grateful! i do prefer light hearted novels but can basically read and enjoy almost everything, in fact i could do with a hard book, re engage the old brain again!
any one help?
:help:
oh btw i am 20 year old female! :)
Micky_Finn 21-01-2006, 13:32 I've always wanted to join a reading group but i've always been afraid of the pace. I study Law so i have to do lots of outside reading and so i can't always commit to finishing one "reading group textbook" per week.
Yellowrose 23-01-2006, 18:52 If there is one which doesnt mind more mature women, I would be interested too.
Perhaps we could start a Sheffield Forum Reading Group?
susiepoosie 24-01-2006, 18:37 Id be interested too but being over 30 might be classed as too old for your group.... sniffs and wipes away a tear :shakes:
Hi - I'd be interested too! But I'm 25 - is that ok?!
sheff_minx 25-01-2006, 15:52 Ah come on peeps. The OP doesn't seem to have replied so maybe some of us others should organise something?
I'm a 19yr old English student, but although it sounds like I read loads of heavy stuff I have to do that for my course and prefer something more light-hearted away from uni. Also, like Micky_Finn I have a lot of uni work so would like something with a fairly relaxed pace (that doesn't mind if sometimes I'm more interested in the gossip than the book!!!)
roisin94 25-01-2006, 17:47 hi sorry for not replying been v busy and totally forgot about the post
to be honest was looking at this as a more social thing, way to meet new people, hence the age group thing and the obvious sex discrimination!
however 'young minded' are welcome, but i was looking at keeping it fairly small so had to limit it some way.
well pm me if you're truly interested.
i'm in florence next week so not actually looking to organise anything til 2nd week in feb.
ps. sarah i pm'ed you back

sheff_minx 25-01-2006, 19:03 Doesn't have to be at a house to start with either - if you feel a bit odd about having strangers in your home, could always go to a quiet pub or bar or something?
Trotterette 27-01-2006, 12:02 Im interested in joining / setting up a reading group too!!
Im of the more mature age too (well 26 !!!!) so maybe we could start one for 25 - 30 year olds??!! Male and female?!
Anyone up for it?!
Trotterette 31-01-2006, 13:46 Come on guys - no one interested in this anymore?!
One of my (many!) new years resolutions was to read more - I need motivation!!
Anyone willing to help??!!
fox20thc 31-01-2006, 13:48 I would be interested but as Im OLD :suspect: I appear not to be in the targeted demographic.
sugarnspice 31-01-2006, 13:54 This sounded good but now realise I am far too old at 26. Lol.
Trotterette 31-01-2006, 13:59 Well Im also too old for the original group but I did suggest setting up one for 25-30 year olds??!!
Lads and lasses? Informal.... bit of reading.... bit of chat.... bit of alcohol (maybe)??

I'm still to old
sugarnspice 31-01-2006, 14:05 Does there need to be a set age group?
Trotterette 31-01-2006, 14:24 No, I guess not?!
Im all for the more the merrier side of things!!
Age, gender, background, gymnastics ability, etc... doesnt matter to me!!
:)

:suspect: anyway, enough about your private life, back on topic :D
sheff_minx 31-01-2006, 15:55 Ditto about no set age group.
But don't want anything too heavy as I have uni work to do (apparently!)
So come on people, lets get something concrete together rather than just talking about it :)
Trotterette 31-01-2006, 16:06 I agree - nothing too formal but we should def arrange something!
How about we just agree a time and place to meet then discuss what we want to do from there / what we want out of it?
Guess we need to make sure we're all on the same wavelength / are expecting the same things from this......??!
sugarnspice 05-03-2006, 13:12 Did this ever get any further?
pinklola 05-03-2006, 18:36 My first post! Would be great if someone did pick up the baton and took this forward.
EdnaKrabappe 05-03-2006, 18:56 A friend of mine who lives in Rotherham talked about starting one of these in the New year but she's still to get it off the ground.
I am way too old for the groups mentioned so far (Very ageist!) so Fox it seems you me and my mate are on our own in the mid thirties group. I wouldn't give a toss how old people are or their sex but that they wanted to read something decent.
My friend over in Stoke belongs to a successful one that meets bi-monthly. They take it in turn to host and it's a good excuse for a few drinks.
My place is too small to host but I'd be happy to chip in for refreshments elsewhere (the pub perhaps?)
Nothing ever got arranged as people couldn't agree whether to have a restricted age group or not (I would rather have it as an open to all thing to be honest).
If we are going to get it going, maybe have the first "meeting" as an informal gathering at a quietish pub to sort out details etc - I'd be quite wary of having a group of strangers in my (small and disgusting!!) flat!
I'd really like to get this going - once I've finished reading Middlemarch that is (Could be any time this year - it's soooooo long :( )
EDIT: Sorry this is Sheff_Minx - forgot to log out again
pinklola 06-03-2006, 19:38 Middlemarch tis long but such a soap opera!
sheff_minx 06-03-2006, 22:18 I've cheated slightly.... I bought the audio book as I'm finding it easier to just sit and be read to than actively turn the pages!! :hihi: Who needs eastenders when you've got the sleepy village of Middlemarch eh?!
whitestatic 21-03-2006, 23:34 did anything happen with this?
I'd love to join one!
NekoZombie 22-03-2006, 11:13 Hello all - it seems that no-one's organising anything? Anyway, I'm 27, and would really love to join a reading group, but obviously, I'm too old for this one. :suspect: Anyways, I think we should just get one organised - maybe in a pub, although I don't mind people meeting at my house in order to get the ball rolling, and I bake some great cakes as well (being a pastry chef). The proposal is to meet in a fortnight; we just need to decide on an initial book. Maybe we could just have an informal meeting, discuss what we'd like to read, drink tea (or maybe something stronger) and eat cake. Seems like a starting point anyway. Anyone who is interested, contact me, or post a message.
