View Full Version : Middle aged men with baseball caps
PaulTansley 15-01-2006, 16:38 This is one of my biggest hates, men who wear them in there 40s onwards.
I no longer wear them and I wore them up to my mid to late 30s.
Do you think men look stupid in baseball caps or do you think there suitable for all ages.
PuressenceUK 15-01-2006, 16:44 Personally I think they look stupid on any age - why people think they look good is beyond me.
I think anyone looks stupid in baseball caps (excluding baseball players) let alone middle aged men.
shoeshine 15-01-2006, 16:49 I look like George Burns "The Boys in Brazil", in my Reebok spesh... I don't care though:clap:
chuffinel 15-01-2006, 16:50 Shouldn't option number 2 read "Mutton trying to look like lamb "?
*Twinkle* 15-01-2006, 16:54 I don't like them on fella's at all... Of any age! :nono:
I am unfortunate enough to have to wear one for work... But it doesn't look too bad and I just pull the front down to hide my face anyways :P
Well, its either that, or a hairnet! :o

Do they have them with their ages on so you know how old they are?
koenigsinger 15-01-2006, 17:09 baseball caps should only be worn by the following groups of people.......
1. baseball players
2.baseball coaches
3. fast food workers
4. roadies.
anyone else, leave em alone they make you look like a wally
anyone wearing them should be gathered up in a truck and dropped off in france.
I am in my forties, and if ever I encountered a contemporary donning such ludicrous headgear, I would seek to persecute, ridicule, humiliate and mock him. If he persisted in wearing the vile symbol of American 'Coca Cola' culture, I might be tempted to pour red hot tea over his head, or to push him into nettles, dog messes etc. Frankly, any grown man who behaves in such a deplorably anti-social manner deserves to be publicly stoned.

melthebell 15-01-2006, 17:41 never worn them, i do have a couple tho (unworn)
and im not quite in my middle age either :P
Grandad.Malky 15-01-2006, 17:45 If the cap fits wear it !
DaBouncer 15-01-2006, 17:48 I've got quite a collection of baseball caps.
I have a couple I wear at the gym.
I have some that I wear when I go mountain biking (if it's an easy ride that is, otherwise I wear a helmet).
I have some that I just wear as and when.
I don't particularly feel they are just for baseball players, why should they be?
The peak of a baseball cap is great for keeping the sun out of my eyes, and the rain too for that matter.
I can't personally see and issue with them, but then I am rationally thinking I guess.

Cycleracer, you have managed to convince me.... I shall wear my baseball cap at every location you are at, if humanly possible. What a humbug you must be. Lighten up, and most of all, GROW UP:hihi:

Unlike alcohol, tobacco and driving, there are no legal age limitations on wearing a Baseball Cap. Lobby Tony Blair through your Union and he might proscribe them for those above the age of 18. I look forward to getting an ASBO when it happens:clap:
its a mid life crisis sort of thing, and it covers up the bald patch i suppose.

I'm a man in my forties and I don't wear a baseball cap, cause my dad would KILL me. He calls them d***khead hats, which I think is quite a catchy name actually. Luckily I don't like them either.
Magneteer 15-01-2006, 19:06 The wearing of pillock caps is as bad as these grown men one sees going out for an evening wearing a football shirt, or obese women who insist on wearing tight leggings. urrrrgh.

When I bought my Reebok Baseball Cap, it was a choice between that and a Yorkshire Cricket Cap Replica.
I decided Babe Ruth was more of a hero than Our Geoffrey.
Basis: he took less time to knock the runs......
Fine for a man to wear a baseball cap -
Women - look AWFUL should never be allowed

They can wear 'em anytime, as long as it's not a REEBOK:)
If someone in their 40's wants to wear a baseball cap then good for them, what should they be wearing a straw boater, a panama hat ?
It's quite laughable on here how people are one day talking about peoples rights to do whatever they want then the next day slagging them off for choosing a hat they don't approve of.
what about middle aged men that wear the caps back to front?

Yes Of course. But you mentioned that you used to wear them into your late 30s. Are you telling me that you can tell the difference between someone in their late 30s and someone in their early 40s? You determined the cut-off point of 40 not me. Why 40 and not 30? If you had chosen 30 then you would have been having a go at yourself for looking a t*t.
I wonder what the response would have been if the question was "Should women over 40 wear high-heels ?"

Since when has the definition of middle aged stated that middle age starts at 45?
So are you saying that an old looking 44 year old is ok to wear one but not a young looking 45 year old?

And what gives you the authority to discuss the apparel worn by anyone..regardless of age. It is a subjective choice for everyone regardless.
I often reminisce what life used to be like in the '50s, '60s but I avoided starting a new thread bemoaning what life is like now, compared to then....unlike you who decided to start a new thread comparing the Forum as it was in 2003 compared to 2006, a few minutes after my challenge on this thread, started by YOU in the first place.
You also pathetically tried to insult me by drawing attention to my avatar Location Statement. I am sure THAT would not have happened on your IDEAL Forum that means so much to you.

now now old ladies
put your suitable headwear on and chill
Cliff Clavin 15-01-2006, 21:23 Can't see a problem myself, they've wore them in the good ol' US of A for ages now, all ages. Hats are hats, whats the difference?
I ware a Baseball hat in summer and one of those Thermol Tea Cosy types in Winter and I have a full head of hair too.
WallBuilder 15-01-2006, 22:59 I know of at least two people who have to wear a cap because their eye's are extremely light sensitive. I don't see that the age of a person is all that important when it comes to wearing the things. I do however think wearing one back to front or worse still sideways looks remarkably silly regardless of age or sex.
HappyHoosier 15-01-2006, 23:22 Some people may look silly in baseball caps, but is that any reason to throw them into nettles or dog poo? I personally don't like velour track suits, but why should it bother me if someone else wears one?
Live and let live! Chacun a son goute!
The baseball cap is a practical piece of headgear, and I will continue to wear mine.
50 years old. I buy a new one every year before I go on holiday. Gets me in the mood for driving in France.......makes the kids laugh and stops back of my neck from getting sunburn.
Well I guess all of us over the age of 30 should wear flat caps, just like Dad & Grandad did,it is a hat to be worn to keep sun off & rain,so what's the problem,I would rather wear mine than an old fashioned flat cap.
If you had lost a lot of your hair and the top of your head gets burnt in the sun what would you suggest I wear as I look a total dipstick in anything else

I take it you never did bump in William Hague then timo? The then leader of the Conservative Party famously wore a baseball cap on a visit to the Notting Hill carnival - and looked a right chav.
I'm in my late 50s, and I wear a peaked baseball cap. But only to keep the sun off my face when mountain walking in Snowdonia. That means I usually only scare the sheep with my headgear! :hihi:
Hauntedyorks 16-01-2006, 10:35 Sorry to throw the spanner in the works...........I bet I get flamed for this.....(if I do, then I guess you have no dress sense)!!!! LOL
But anybody in a baseball hat says chav to me......It was de-rigure to wear em about 5 or 6 years ago and now I think they are the epitome of 'naffness'......might as well wear a neckercheif and waistcoat and have done with it!......and get a whippet N all...for good measure ;)

So the answer to your pathetic reply is I give myself the right to discuss what people wear and most have come on here to reply there views.
If someone says a 45 year old looks as cool as a 20 year old then thats there view and thats fine.
You come on here shouting the odds telling me to mind my own business or grow up instead of giving your point of view.
Go back to the beginning of this thread and listen to yourself, your an absolute pratt, and many have PMd me saying the same.
If you don't like my threads then its simple, just stay out of them and don't reply at all.
I take it I will never here your comments on one of my threads again.
I have seen film stars, sports stars all over the age of 50 wearing a baseball cap & no one says Jack Nicholson looks stupid, mind you if they did they would get a good hiding.A hat no matter what design is made to protect the head from the elements. It is up to the individual what they want to wear clothes hats etc:.Samuel L Jackson wears a modern flat cap backwards ,but because he wore them all the kids started too copy him & he is well into his 50s so the middle aged are not all wrong.I am coming up to the big 50 & I choose not to wear the cap my Dad & Grandad wore because they are old fashioned.I like a good shaped baseball cap,as I find them comfortable.I think we should wear what we want,we live in a free society.

But you would also need a stripey collarless shirt , black hob-nailed boots, a greasy black flat cap, brown corduroy trousers, and some string to tie round them just below the knee ;)
Just how my grandad looked,, coming home from the steelworks :D
Redrobbo,
I do indeed remember Hague's [or 'little Billy Pop' as I believe Rotherham wags call the former Tory leader and Dandelion and Burdock heir] disastrous 'multicultural' period in which he donned a baseball cap and lewdly disported himself at the Notting Hill Carnival in buttock-enhancing 'batty rider' shorts. As if the 'ethnic vote' would be swayed by such transparent overtures?
I can forgive you your functional peaked cap, which you must look terribly fetching in when climbing up Ben Nevis. At least that is what he told me, dear heart.
I reiterate that aside from those who actually play baseball [ rounders for American sissies], or perhaps engage in pursuits such as mountaineering such as dear Robbo, all men should avoid wearing such spectacularly oafish headgear. Anyone over the age of forty found guilty should be subject to condign punishment in law. May I suggest that they be subjected to the old Irish torment, 'The wearing o' the pitch cap'. This involves the victim being forced to don a cap of blazing turf. 'Shoeshine'! Where are you?!

First time I remember seeing anyone wearing a baseball cap backwards was by the middle aged slob sportswriter in the Odd Couple TV series (late 1970's?).
I can't remember which film but John Wayne wore a baseball cap.

Timo,
Can we perhaps table the introduction of urgent legislation against this abhorrence in the League of Empire Loyalist manifesto? I can see it as a vote winner, along with banning 'fat-chicks' wearing lycra and the total abolition of the 'shell-suit'. The electorate will be eating out of our hands with this one I'm sure! :D :D

Do you think men look stupid in baseball caps or do you think there suitable for all ages. As you say your wore your cap til you reached your late 30s..... does that mean you now wear you Mr bean Y-fronts (over 35) as a replacement.....:D

;) however, I still dress very casual and can look smart when the ocassion requires me to.
I will give the Mr Bean Y fronts a miss though.:hihi:
Gentlemen Gentlemen Cyclracer Shoeshine
isn't it about time you both called a truce
you are both fully grown men & should be showing
the younger members of the forum how to behave
on a public forum it's 6 of 1 & 6 of the other both
of you have valid points there is no need to slag
each other off
get more than 3 people together anywhere & you
will get a difference of opinion that's a fact
why does there have to be all this hostility can't
you both sort your differences out like Gentlemen:thumbsup:

OK I won't...( but between you and me, I will) but I promise not to be offended, whatever it says.
I have 3 kids about your age, love them to bits, and they have problems of their own which I worry about. Take good care when out on your bike, and Happiness to you and yours through 2006. Peter
Hey Paul & Peter that wasn't too hard was it glad to see

daverity 16-01-2006, 20:32 Would they look better in DUTCH CAPS (http://www.discountcostumes4u.com/images/products/gc43%20dutch%20girl%20hat.jpg) perhaps? :D :D
Don_Kiddick 16-01-2006, 20:35 I often wear 4 at once with the peak of each pointing in 4 directions so, from above no one can guess which way I'mm gonna go.

How fortunate for you that you put 'telly' and not 'TV' because I'd have been straight on Google images if you had!:D :D

I hear what you're saying Dave, and the very thought Horrified (http://www.cbgb.com/shrine/photos/Lisa%20Kristal%20Photos/Dead_Boys-Devine.jpg) me ! :gag:
Baseball caps are working hats(if some of you can understand the term work). At 72 I've worn them for 50yrs In the summer no burnt heads, peak shields the eyes, great for taking harness horse around the track no stone chips bouncing off head.Nice thick wool for those 30 below freezing winters ,no brain freeze. But most of all although 70LBs over I still look a fine figure of a man wearing one.Thats just my opinion.
zoboz111 17-01-2006, 08:31 i Think that caps are very ladish and a young mans hat but you won't get mine of my head in the summer, So if it helps you wear it.

Did someone tell you you look stupid, or did you suddenly lose your bottle and start worrying about what "people might tihink".
I can't imagine waking up one day and thinking "I'm not wearing that anymore because I'm too old", you might as well start with the cardigan and slippers now.
