View Full Version : Believe the Truth!

Has anyone else noticed that the city is being covered with posters, stickers, signs and graffiti all saying stuff like "Believe", "Believe the Truth", "The Truth Is Coming", "God is... [then loads of checkboxes]". Some of these are in very strange / original places too (like stapled to the tree supports in the gardens at the one:eleven / Wards Brewery develepment)!

What the hell is that all about? Is it just some religious freak who's lost the plot or is it the work of a much larger cult organisation? Or is it a new band called "Believe" who are just trying to get publicity. (Needless to say, there's plenty people out there - myself included - who thought "Gouranga" was a band who'd taken the time out to fly post every bridge in the country !)

Can anyone shed any light on this?

Cheers.

Just found this regarding Gouranga:

Some interesting ideas... but none are actually definitive.

There is a rumbling that lots of Christians believe that we have entered the rapture...not a song by Blonde....... the bible version. Then onto Armageddon.....again this is not a film with Bruce Willis.

Having stopped my search for The Truth, I'm now looking for a really good fantasy :D

Gouranga is used by Hare Krishna, it's definatly them putting them up. I have seen it first hand, but also asked. There seems to be a big comunity in Leeds and they always greet you in the street with the word, one time i asked and they are indeed putting them up.

Aha... after more graffiti about this appearing, they now seem to have a website address too:

It seems "The Truth" is a book that you can order... maybe it's like the bible but full of true stuff ... ?

its just one guy. He is an artist, im writing an article about him that might appear on tangents.co.uk soon. I'd like to know more about him from local people though, i met him by chance and lots of people seem to know him. he believes he's a messenger from God. I think some of his poems are beautiful but his hands shake when he talks. I thought it was a large church run group but its not. thanks for the correct website though, he told it to me wrong.

Writing the sayings and quotes isn't too bad - let them do that if it makes them happy. The bottom line is that it's graffiti though!!!

Just because he believes he's a messenger from God doesn't give him the right to graffiti all over the city!

(It's not just graffiti too - sometimes he's stapled cardboard to tree supports, doors, etc...)

I've met the man who claims to be God. His name is Henry and he someone told me that he had a pizza place on Eccleshall road once. I do believe that he is very possibly on acid. But he is a really nice guy who has very strong morals and lives a simpple life. You can't miss him he is ofen found wondering around S10/11 he's slim with long black curly hair and he's always smiling. I've read his book and it actually makes a lot of sense so he is not just rambling rubbish(except for the part where he claims that taking acid should be compulsory. Although to be fair, without wanting to sound like a hippy, everyone i know who has taken it says that once you've done it you see the world the way it really is. So maybe he's not so wrong.

Phanerothyme

lysergic acid diethylamide has the very peculiar property of lifting your perceptive filters, so that you see the world as if for the first time - no preconceptions or value judgements in place. It does forever alter your outlook if used properly, and whilst making it compulsory is probably a bit authoritarian, there are many people who would probably benefit from a session.

It's a pity it is illegal, and especially as it is classed a Class A drug - deemed as dangerous as Heroin, Crack and Cocaine. Bizarre since it is actually an anti-addictive drug, i.e actively dissuades users from habitual use.

Look, instead of posting misinformation, why not post nothing at all?

It makes you look better and stops anyone getting the false impression that you know what you are talking about.

What I would try and steer clear of, is whatever you have been sniffing that makes your posts almost unintelligible.

LSD is an astoundingly safe drug.

Gouranga does indeed mean 'be happy'.

I believe you are referring to The Gouranga Powered Band in some of your posts; I think they are fantastic! I'm currently listening to 'The Opulence Of The Absolute' album

Hare Krishnas (such as myself) go around getting people to say it, to spread a little happiness, and give people good Karma :)

A few weeks ago, i was in Stevenage giving out badges to anyone who would say 'Gouranga!' and i gave out about 30 in half an hour or so!

I have a badge that says 'Shout GOURANGA or else' hehe, i love it.

I wonder if this is the same bloke that I once saw writing similar slogans in chalk on the paving stones outside the cathedral? He seems to match the physical description and looked like quite an eccentric character to me. He was kicking up a fuss at the time and the police had been called, it transpired that he was confused as to why a man (whom I presume was the Dean) wanted him to stop defacing the pavement.

Aside from the fact that he sounds like a unique thinker, I have to say that if this is the same guy (AND I STRESS IF THIS IS!) then he needs to learn a little respect for the freedom of self-determination that all human beings have a right to. While scrawling christian phrases on the floor might seem innocent, I feel that as a non-christian I have a right to object in the same way as I have the right to close the door to a person proseltysing on by doorstep.

Methinks that if he was a representative of the Church of Satan, then there would be more of a fuss.

Syd was struggling with depression and anxiety before he even took LSD. There is no question that the sheer quantity and frequency of his LSD use precipitated a mental breakdown, but to pin its cause completely on LSD is to ignore the whole picture.

No one in their right mind takes that (astonishingly large) number of doses as Syd did. Syd was not in his right mind, and exacerbated the condition.

If Syd had taken as many doses (cups) of coffee as he did 'trips', he would have died. If he'd had as many glasses of wine as trips, he'd be dead. And Paracetamol, and ecstasy, and cocaine, and heroin etc.

In terms of the amount it takes to kill you, LSD is about 5000 times safer than alcohol.

If you are an aggressive, argumentative person, you should watch your alcohol consumption very carefully. Similarly, if you are anxious, stressed, depressed, manic, or otherwise unbalanced, LSD is unlikely to be very helpful.

But approached in a positive and grounded way, LSD is truly a modern wonder.

With only one positively identified fatality (a prisoner injected with a huge dose by scientific researchers) and a handful of oft repeated urban myths...

...it's astonishingly safe, and that Syd Barrett is alive (and by all accounts quite well) is a testament to this fact.

It certainly is not risk free. But then what is?

"Approach without judging

read without judging

understand without judging"

I have no problem with the chalk drawings refered to in the OP.

They are chalk, they are harmless, they will wash away. (and yes I have seen the paper versions, flyposted... not so keen on them)

I do have problems with the spray-painted graffiti (not associated with this chap in the op) that we see in the underpasses and on walls all around the city, which doesn't wash away easily and looks an eyesore.

it isn't anything obscene, or subversive... it's just a bloke encouraging us to wake up an aspect of our spirituality (IMHO).

A bit of chalk on a wall is not hurting anything.

Man, I remember chalking hopscotch squares/numbers on the paving stones outside our yard as a kid, and my next door neighbours' sons chalking cricket stump-marks against the gable wall of the houses.

Just my two penn'orth.

Hehe, this weekend just gone, i was out with a few friends putting up some Gouranga posters... not on bridges mind, lol... methinks its difficult hanging over the side to paste them up. But anyways, it ISNT pointless, and it IS part of my religion. So yeah... freedom of speech and all that! As for the Gouranga guys in the streets that you bump into, please show them some respect and common courtesy... believe me, my mind acts up enough without being sworn at/shouted at/ just plain ignored. We don't want to take up hours of your time. Besides... if you guys were to say Gouranga as soon as we asked you the first time, then we wouldnt pester you any longer, and you'd waste less time! and if you do engage him in coversation dont wind him up too much he has a tendency to get a little would up at times and can become aggitated .voice hearers can be a risk to the public . we can blame the goverments care in the community for this . henry should be looked after by the correct care staff.. lets just hope his voices dont tell him to do anything daft
