I have a six foot fence down two sides of the garden,24 foot garage,a six foot wrought iron gate with a padlock on it,and some one has manage to get onto the garden and steal eight medium size koi carp.
If I report it to the police, they won't do anything.

You sure its not a heron or something, swooping down into the garden ? you dont say what time of day this occurred

whats the world coming to ? i keep Koi myself and i sort of know how you must be feelin especialy if youve reered them from being small. With hindsight though i have taken pictures of each of my Koi and if they were to be stolen i would hand copies to the Koi dealers in my area, not so much as someone would try to sell them to the dealer but some of the dealers customers may just recognise one of them and you may by some slight chance gat some back.Iknow this doesnt help youre situation but its a thought for when you restock.Hope you do have some luck gettin em back though.

I have to agree with mega_monty on this one.My step dad garden is fully closed of to anyone with fence and big steel gates with padlocks on them and alarmed all way down the garden.
But one time he found that 4 of his fish had gone.He reported it to the police and it was them that told him to look out for a herron as they been a few fish down eccelsfield way that gone missing and the bird been seen.
And next day he got up to see the herron sat on the neighbours roof .He now put a gazebo on top of his pond now and this had stop his fish getting took.I hope no human has took your fish, but if they been no break in or look of someone been in ur garden then i look for the bird.

Medium sized Koi, i'd say approx 3-4 pound in weight. I can't see a Heron being able to take a fish of that weight personally, never mind 8 of them :suspect:

Hmmm sounds a bit fishy if you ask me!

my next door neighbour has similar fencing etc but some sod stole 4 of his fish last year and the police said most people just report it to cover them for insurance purpose's as its highly unlikly they'll surface (pardon the pun) again.

If you have seen plastic herons in garden centres and such like, they do serve a purpose.Herons are territorial so they think that pond belongs to another bird.No guarantee from me that they work though.

I agree with you about the plastic heron being a deterrent.
I have 27 medium to large Koi in my pond and I have never had any problems with any of them going amiss.

This autmn I have lost 5 12 inch koi, which I'd had for 8 years, from my garden pond, very upsetting.
I reckon the seagulls had them.
I had thinned out the lilies, which were overgrown and covering the surface,so the cover for the fish had gone..
Although there are herons they can't land/take off from the edge of the pond because of the fence and high plants.

Someone tried to steal my Grandads last year, He has quite a few fish in his pond, they only took the black ones out. He thinks that someone was trying to steal them to order.

They were disturbed and the fish were found in a empty wheely bin just down the road!

They were all fine and now enjoying themselves swimming about again.

He also had a few taken by a herron, until he got a big daft plastic one, its never been back since!

Strange, as black Koi are generally next to worthless, they probably didnt have a clue about Koi.

I'd also be careful about telling all on sundry on here that you have large Koi (the ones that are posting up)

Good animal deterrents are available, they work with a sensor, when something moves around the edge of the pond (cat, heron, anything) they squirt water in that direction. I've seen them for sale in various places including Ebay.
