Hi Guys,

Went to see Mark Thomas @ the City Hall tonight. As ever it was an excellant gig - he has a very powerful message.

Something that bugged me though was that he uses a lot of gags which compare the audience to their local rivals - He used Barnsley. It's a close call, but I don't reckon that is where Sheffieldiers hold the most rivalry / hatred. What about Doncastarians (?) (Where all the women are men).

I was thinking of collating a list of places he can use in his gags that Sheffieldiers just don't think should remain on the map. I'll email him before he comes back.

Has anyone got any suggestions? (I think we can take anywhere Down South as read.)

Ian

Whilst I didn't attend the most recent gig by Mark Thomas, I find the
use of other communities to make fun of, including in your words"hatred",
rather at odds with the main thrust of Mark Thomas's political stance.
Do you really think that there are places that shouldn't remain on the map ?
Are you also so naive as to think that as soon as MT moves onto the
next gig, that Sheffield is not included in some list of places to mock.

Rotherham is usually mocked as a 'village hamlet'. Sheffielders forget that Rotherham existed before Sheffield did!

Is that why there is a strong signs of inbreeding???

I heard yesterday that Rotherham is now a district of Sheffield... wasn't it already a district of Sheffield - they have Sheffield postcodes anyway, don't they...?

Does anyone remember that piece Jeremy Clarkson did on Rotherham?!

Barnsley, Rotherham and Doncaster are our neighbours, not rivals. Our biggest 'enemy' is Leeds.

Unless of course it's a wider issue, then it's Lancastrians!

Worksop also has Sheffield postcodes but its not part of Sheffield.

Were you by any chance listening to Big John at Breakfast on Hallam FM? I suspect you fell victim to one of his wind ups ;)

Yes... but in my defense, it was a news story - and those don't normally include wind-ups. :?

What exactly have you got against people that come from "down South"??

I have nothing against people from down south. I think some Sheffielders just have a chip on their shoulder, a sort of inverted snobbery.

I have nothing against them in person, but their blinkered views of anywhere above where they are is often frankly shocking to say the least

And yours aren't?

Do I really need to illustrate some of the complete b******s that people have spoken at me since I moved up north 5 years ago???

The thing I hate about Southerners, Londoners in particular, is take them anywhere further North than the Motorway services at Watford Gap, and they think they're on an alien Planet, and consequently assume point blank that anybody with any kind of Northern accent might as well be a Klingon or summat.

The only rivalry that immediately springs to mind is Leeds...dunno why tho, maybe they forgot to return our lawnmower

As for the whole North Vs South issue, quite frankly I couldnt give a flying ford fiesta where you come from, so long as you arent a complete t***

Not really no, while being a Northerner, with an obvious Northern accent I spend fair of time "da'aan saaath" and people are just generally ruder and look down upon the "north"

Uuup' North and in the South West are possibly the friendliest places in the UK IMO

Wasn't Sheffields (Sheaffields) original name Sheffield-by-Rotherham?

Whom is the ******* offspring of whom?

But then..the arch-rival' ...its Leeds really isnt it?

And what I am saying to you is that it works the same the other way round. People give abuse up north to people with southern accents. I do agree that people are generally not as friendly in London as up north, but I am also sick of people referring to Londoners as 'southerners'. The two are very different, I assure you.
