I have 2 slots for memory but today one of the ends of the memory holder that holds the memory in has snapped off luckily i am not using that slot at the moment but will be doing so in the near future what can i do to sort it out?

other than very strong super glue (And a very VERY steady hand) you'd have to buy a new board otherwise you cant use the slot...

You MAY beable to... its just if it doesnt work, dont be surprised, of if it works and keeps going funny, dont be surprised....

The white clip that holds the memory that has just come off and it is not snapped, but theres a small black bit that has snapped off the white holder part.

All you can do is bung the memory in and hope for the best - the clips obviously hold the memory in place but I don't think the Motherboard is sophisticated enough to know if the clip is properly engaged. So push the memory in very firmly, make sure the other clip engages properly and fire up your PC. As the poster above says, if it works then great but don't be surprised if it doesn't.

The other alternative to getting a new Motherboard is to buy a single stick of RAM of equal size to the two you were going to use so you don't need to use the second slot. i.e if you were gonna use 2 x 256 sticks, buy 1 x 512. It still means shelling out money on it but it's cheaper and easier than a new motherboard.

Ahh, If its just the black "pushy" thing, and not the whole clip, you should get away with it, its still got the grooves there for the memory, and you still have one.. you should be fine..

The alternative is to find a broken motherboard with same memory type, and steal one from that ;)

trouble is, the clips hold the memory in slot, and at the same time push the board in, making sure theres a good contact between the board and the socket. If the clip doesnt work properly, theres a chance that the board could not contact the socket properly, which would cause random errors, lockups, crashes etc, and could ultimately damage the memory. I wouldnt risk it.

actually they dont hold the memory in, They are just there for easy removal... since its the runner, and the slot its self that holds the memory in....

depends how the motherboards mounted. Personally, on a motherboard mounted vertically in a tower case, Id rather the clips were stopping gravity doing its thing and dropping my memory out of the slots while the computer was running than just a friction fit socket, but maybe thats just me.

if you have memory int he good slot at the mo, you could change it into the broken one now, push it well in, boot up and see what happens.........test it before you actually buy a stick to go in the slot permenently
as has been said, it may not hold in as much as normal and youd get very random errors, crashes etc
but it may be ok as long as you dont keep moving the puter or banging it etc
