View Full Version : Whats going on in Norton Lees?
kenwoodapart 13-01-2006, 10:52 I have been living in Norton Lees for past 5 years and its been a really nice quiet place to live. Over the last few months there has been loads of trouble. Windows being smashed, burglarys, vanalism, troublesome kids etc, and now I have have just found out about the armed robbery on Derbyshire Lane.
anyone else noticed this?
I live there also, and touch wood have heard nothing of any vandalism, break ins or any such problems.
The armed robbery i heard but have seen no confirmed news, although this can happen in any area, of any town, at any time.
Looking at moving to Norton Lees...oh dear! Maybe not such a good move?
I used to live there and it was a really nice quiet place to live. I never had any trouble.
I live in Woodseats now and have a friend who lives in Norton Lees who as said the same thing.
I'm sure the robberies only happened because it is known as a quiet area so it's an easy target, due to it being unexpected...
Unfortunately the small vandalism acts happen anywhere these days and there doesn't seem alot anyone can do about it.
kenwoodapart 13-01-2006, 12:31 Its been a really nice area for so long, there just seems to be alot of crime in the area at the moment. Hopefully this will pass. I hope so anyway!
Much of it I'm told is caused by a group of teenagers who have been moved on by the police from another area. (not sure where from).

We were told it was because of a police curfew on Meersbrook Park.
I'm not a great deal older than some of the known trouble-causers and recognise them from Newfield. The majority are from Meersbrook who come to their mates up here.
One little scrat has chosen to graffiti "MANE" around and about, I also know some people have had trouble around their houses. If things haven't changed from my day, kids seem to congregate in the Dairy on Hemsworth Road. A wide off road and floodlit space.
Friday nights are particularly bad and the police just aren't bothered when the idiots are messing around your house. It makes me wonder how Meersbrook got a curfew!
blackcat 13-01-2006, 12:44 details of the robbery from the SYP site;
South Yorkshire Police - Appeal for Information - Sheffield South
Police are appealing for information after an armed robbery in Sheffield, which may be linked to four other recent incidents in the area.
The incident happened at around 1845 on Wednesday 11 January 2006, when a man entered the Mitchells wine merchants on Derbyshire Lane in the Norton area.
He produced what appeared to be a handgun and threatened staff, before making off with a small amount of cash from the till.
The man is described as olive skinned, aged in his mid twenties, 5ft 10 tall and of average build. He was wearing a navy blue nylon kagool pulled tight around his face, with dark hair visible underneath and bushy eyebrows.
He left the store on foot, but a small burgundy hatchback was also seen to leave the area at the same time, travelling down Abbey View Drive.
Officers from the central robbery team would like to speak to anyone who witnessed the incident or saw anything suspicious around that time. They would also like to hear from anyone with information about the sighted car.
There have been four other similar incidents in Sheffield recently and, although keeping an open mind, officers are considering the possibility that they are all linked.
Anyone with information is urged to contact DS Chris Singleton or DC Brian Sutherland on 0114 296 3245 or Crimestoppers

He is a little scrat as well. My partner caught him in the act and gave chase, he's not so cool when there's an angry skinhead chasing him I can tell you.
kenwoodapart 13-01-2006, 13:11 Ive seen the 'MANE' grafti on Derbyshire Lane and some poor person has had their garage completely covered in graffti.
I went to the Co-op on Derbyshire Lane the other day and couldnt get in as they were locking the doors because of some teenagers throwing stones at the doors and swearing at the staff.
Your right Norton, how did Meersbrook get a curfew? what on earth must have happened there?

My other half and his dad have had some by the scruff of the neck as well :) Not so big and hard when there's two burly blokes grabbing you.
The sad thing is, if the police got involved, it would be the people trying to protect their property that got in trouble. Not the idiots who are cutting off car aerials, knocking down fences and throwing stones at house windows.
I still think Norton Lees is a good area and I'm glad I live here. It's just the activity of a few scrotes that ruins it for all of us.
The biggest annoyance for me is the amount of little scummy gits riding round on motorbikes, no helmets, no licence. The autorities just don't care anymore, I guess it's something we have to put up with, and when our car stereo gets stolen or our property damaged, well tough.
Action2000 13-01-2006, 20:06 I have never seen an area deteriorate so quickly, i have lived here for six years and in the last 3 months there seens to be gang after gang causing trouble, there are gangs of thirty kids at a time screaming shouting and being generally disorderly, in the area around derbyshire lane, i have had my car damaged twice my girlfreinds car broken into 3 times, graffiti everywhere, windows on other peolples houses have been smashed, i heard of a motorbike stolen, and houses broken into all in the last couple of weeks crazy!
Sheffette 13-01-2006, 20:35 Aaaah, thought it was quiet in Meersbrook recently!!!
They must have moved on, but don't worry, they're on a circuit so it'll be another poor sod's turn to have them soon...and eventually they'll work their way back down here ;)
Actually most of the kids are ok kids, but there's always one.....

And welcome to Sheffield Forum!

Talk to the guy who runs the Post Office off Upper Albert Road. He did a lot of campaigning for ASBOs in Meersbrook.

Twitcher 18-01-2006, 18:01 Hi, I too live on the lane, where the quarry is.........I found out when we'd moved here that the old lady moved out cos of the kids!
Summertime is the worst, they sit accross the road on the quarry top wall or mostly on our boundry wall from 2 - 15 teenagers smoking drinking, fighting, shouting. I've found that if you move them on you get abuse and by the time the police have arrived they've moved on anyway. It came as no surprise that last year someone fell over the quarry, it was an accident waiting to happen. I find it quite intimidating approaching teenagers en masse and try to ignore them but when they're shoving each other thru your hedge it's no joke.
I know kids need somewhere to hang out but doing damage to property is not on. I recently had 2 kids (from newfield)throwing bits of my boundary wall (they had broken off) at the post and telewest box on the corner....A couple of years ago there was a huge meeting at the old hall (now flats) and community police were regularly on the beat and patrolling with cars as so many people had complained about the kids in the area, seems as others have said they just keep moving round the area till they become someone elses problem, or just grow up.
About the grafitti, I'm sick of seeing a 'horse' all round the area, anyone else noticed this?
I guess wherever you go there are teenagers hanging around and while ever they are getting people to buy their booze and fags from corner shops it will carry on.
lizelard 18-01-2006, 18:15 i took my mother to see the police last week, she lives near graves park. there has been a gang of approx 40 youths on consecutive friday nights throwing themselves through hedges and damaging cars etc.. she is too afraid to approach them. woodseats police gave her a number for a community officer, but they are unable to attend a shout...you will have to dial the 2202020 (i think thats it) please (they said ) don't ring 999 because it is not classed as a real emergency???
try not to be terrified by them in your own home they will go eventually.ARRHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH:rant:
soz fell better now well a bit anyway

We had the same treatment. A bunch of idiots playing around in our front garden and throwing mud bombs at the windows. As we live in a bungalow, my mum was really intimidated. People are gonna get to the stage where they just get an air rifle/baseball bat/paintball gun out to protect their own property from the little scumbags.
It's not like they hadn't got anything to do in the area. The youth club had to be shut down because of all the trouble the kids sat outside drinking were, as far as I'm aware it's now reopened.
I was no angel in my younger days (cider in the park, as you do) but we never caused any trouble to anyone and we took ourselves well out of the way. Messing about on someone's garden was out of the question.
I'm shocked at this - has the curfew on the area now been lifted? Or is it/was it only for the Meersbrook area itself, not the wider area of S8? This really did work, as it kept the kids off the streets after dark.
I was looking at larger houses up towards Norton but I think I'll stick with Heeley. We've got nowhere to park, but also very few teenagers, and what there are tend to gather round the shops and just grunt quietly.
Why don't you get together and take some action? i don't mean violent action! I mean approaching the council and police, as you will have more impact in numbers; I think this is how the curfew on meersbrook was enacted.
Does this mean that it's meersbrook kids making a nusiance of themselves on Derbyshire Lane? :suspect:
kenwoodapart 19-01-2006, 10:34 I am also having problems on Derbyshire Lane.
I have written to our local MP, Meg Munn about these kids as Im so sick of all the trouble. I have also spoken to the police about what can be done and they have said they need some names before they can take further action. I dont know any of the kids as I am fairly new to the area.
There needs to be a curfew on the area like Meersbrook Park so that kids are banned from the area after a certain time. I know that there are some kids that are innocent of any wrong doing, but this can't go on. I may never find out who the trouble causers are so this is the only way to put a stop to it.
I will continue to write & phone the council / police until something is done to restore the peace to this area. If everyone else having problems does the same, maybe they will take this more seriously.
I really feel for the elderly residents, who must be absolutely terrified to see 30/40 kids messing around their houses.
Im just soooo frustrated by it all

Believe me, even when they're given names, they don't do a thing and most of the trouble makers should be quite well known anyway.
Why don't the police start doing rounds on a Friday night? They might prevent trouble then, rather than pretending to care after the event has passed.
Just a thought like...
Hi Norton,
As well as the (almost shut down )youth club isn't there a Karate club at the same place, on Tuesday night I think. Theres also the scout hq , but that won't be "cool" enough for them will it?
ekke_287 19-01-2006, 15:24 i live in meersbrook and there's been a curfew for a while here, mainly because of gangs wandering around and causing trouble, beating people up etc. etc.
there were also reports of drug dealers in meersbrook park after dark, not sure if this is true though.
most of the trouble was in the summer, seems to have calmed down somewhat.
only trouble i've had was name calling by a gang of about 15 kids, i could have battered them but not all at once. dropping to their level isnt worth getting a kicking or worse in my opinion.

Is the curfew still in force then? I had a feeling I'd read somewhere it had been lifted?
Apparently there would be gangs of 30-40 kids hanging out around the shops and chippy on Albert Rd, hurling abuse at people going in and out and it was getting so bad people had stopped using their local services and just stayed locked indoors at night. So eventually the council and police agreed to the curfew. I think it was nobody under 16 out after 8pm, and no more than 2 under 16 year olds to be seen 'together' at any time.
Should this be linked up with the other 'Norton Lees' thread?
I've recently moved to the Warminster Road area and have not seen any trouble at all. Always seems very safe and quiet and my daughters have been out in the evening with no problems at all.

I meant the youth club at Mount View Methodist Church on Derbyshire Lane.
I'd never move away from here and the incidents as far as we're concerned, are sparadic although more frequently in the summer. If the kids move away from here, it'll be some other area that suffers.
