You are in Surrey right?? You are a world away from what London has to offer here in Sheffield.

Though I love the city dearly and feel it is far ahead of itself in many respects. Dont try to look for things you will find in London.

My sister lives in Hastings, my mum lives in Uckfield and has worked and lived all over the South including East Grinstead and Lingfield - the way they work down there is completely different to up here. The standards are completely different also.

You will find loads of parks here in Sheffield all of them probably with playgrounds and other leisure facilities - but the toddlers play centre and other specific childrens pens are almost none existent or attached to a pub.

A kids swimming pool is the small pool at the leisure centre and most libraries will have a childrens section.

thanks for message moon maiden. I'm not necesarily looking for somewhere similar to London, I am though looking for somewhere nice I can settle down in and afford to buy a nice house (currently renting a flat) I have a liitle one at the moment so most of our time is focused on her. Do you have children, are there any toddler groups near you? Is there a park close to the city centre? Also do you know Killamarsh? I would love to hear more about this area?

hope ti hear from you again

I live in Hillsborough. I am a mum/step mum to four kiddies ages ranging from 2-14yrs.

We have loads of toddler groups. Perhaps it may be better if you contacted the Childrens information service in Sheffield.
http://www.sheffield.gov.uk/education/information-for-parentscarers/childcare

Hillsborough park is less than 5 mins walk from my house, it houses the library, walled gardens, a duck pond, large open lawns, a fenced playground, football areas and tennis courts I think. At the other side of Hillsborough park you have the leisure centre.
There is a place above the co-op supermarket (which is less than 5 mins from the park) called the Fun Zone which is great for the kids but a nightmare for parents as the kids can run around ragged and you cannot get them :D . It has a little cafe in there and they host childrens parties.

McDonalds has a fun gym thing too.

I love Hillsborough (bet you canne guess), everything is convieient. It is on direct routes with the city and about 1/2 hours walk away you are in the Rivelin Valley. The first part of which is a nature trail - it has a playground, an outdoor pool which is packed in the summer and a nice little cafe. You can do the rest of the trail which is more rugged and have a cuppa and a slice of cake at the Post Office at the end of the trail and then either walk or take the bus back. http://www.rivelinvalley.org.uk/

The schools are good too. They have their selection of good and bad like any other area. My little boy starts Malin Bridge soon and my eldest goes to Wisewood secondary school.

Killamarsh.........nah.

hi ya
thanks for advice, especially on kiddies stuff, it does sound nice where you are. I was asking around about hilsborough not so long ago and I met someone who used to live there. She said it wasn't bad but the football matches ruined it, ie lots of people coming, causing trouble at times. Do you ever find that?

Killamarsh is on the far South of the city close to the M1 and easy access to Chesterfield which is a much nicer town centre than Sheffield.
Its quite a nice area but like all areas of Sheffield it has a good side and bad side so care should be taken before residing in Killamarsh.
It comes under Derbyshire not South Yorkshire which may indicate cheaper Council Tax.
I live in Longley which has a large park and used to have an outdoor pool.
I am near to the Northern General Hospital or about 1.5 miles from Hillsbrough.
Longley to has a good side and bad side, i,m on the posh side  We have running water and electricity and our own teles.

The best park IMHO is Millhouses
Nice cafe
2 nice play areas
boating lake
river
football areas
basketball areas
Tennis
bowls
cricket pitch
Soon to be a skatepark
Seasonal small fair - bouncy castles ect

This park used to be an institution in Sheffield when I was a kid, with families from all over the city having full days out there, as it used to have paddling pools and open air lido.

The nearest reasonable priced area to this would be woodseats which is a fairly thriving communitywith good shopping, supermarkets, pubs, churches, schools, and it is only about 3 miles from the city centre.

Notes on Killamarsh/Kiveton etc
You will probably get more of a house out that way for your money, but these are ex mining communities and they do have some problems, there is a huge estate at Kiveton which is called White city (I think) and it does have drugs, vandalism, crime problems. Having said that there is new housing going up around there. The other thing to keep in mind is that these areas are 15 to 20 miles outside of the city centre and getting into the centre by car would take around 45 mins in rush hour.

IMHO stick to the closer suburbs of Sheffield like Woodseats, Heeley, Meersbrook, Hillsboro, Crookes, Walkley.

Other nice parks in the area
Meersbrook - good for sledging when we get some snow
Graves - Huge park with everthing that Millhouses, also close to woodseats.
Heeley City Farm is good for a visit with small kids, lots of small animals for kids to see.
Endcliffe park - this is student land so gets very busy on nice days with students.
There are also loads of indoor play areas for kids like Just for Kids Bramall Lane but you have to pay.

Thats all from me

You may struggle getting a 3 bed for that price. Would probably get a terrace house somewhere.

You could try http://www.reedsrains.co.uk/

Actually there is a terraced house for sale a few doors on from me priced at around £70,000. The family there have to relocate again becausae of his job now being in Scunthorpe.

The houses are two bedroom with attic. From what I had been told their attic is quite big. I am overcroweded in mine at the moment there are 6 of us at maximum fill point, but we fit nicely :D

OMG we could be neighbours!!! :P

Hi again.
thanks everyone for all the info and advice, i will visit sheffield for the first time at the weekend so it's really good to get an insight. It's not east so spend a long time looking around when travelling with a toddler so i really do need to have an idea of what areas to concentrate on.

I had no idea that killamarsh was so far away from sheffield city centre, how gar is it from chesterfield? It definitely sounds like I should be careful where to view there. If I asked abou certain roads in kilamarsh(where I was planning to view) can anyone give me their honest opinion as to whether it's the right side? I would be very grateful.

The bad estate on kiveton certainly doesn't sound good, in you opinion does the trouble spill out onto most of the kiveton area?

Hillsborough does sound nice moon maiden, I couldn't seem to find the property you were talking about on the web site, but i did find properties for a bit more money in shepperson rd and marion rd what do you think of these roads, any ideas? somewhere with a nice big big park, leisure centr, shops is just what i am looking for.

Longley also sounds nice but i dont think i have noticed any houses there when searching through websites (maybe out of my price range?)

I have seen a few properties in woodseats but most of the houses (by the looks of them) seemed a little run down (again maybe my price range) If i did see any properties would you be able to advise me on good/bad streets?

Hope to hear from people soon

re - woodseats, ive also seen a nicer looking house in helmton rd, does anybody know this rd/like it?

Helmton Road is OK, close to the main road (Chesterfield Road), shops, schools, pubs, Graves Park etc. The only problem if your house is at the bottom end is daytime parking, the houses at the bottom are terraced and so have no drives but they are very popular houses especially for first time buyers and they sell quickly.

Helmton Rd is Ok, its a steep rd running off the main Chesterfield Rd, you really need to drive around and take a look.

The better end is Mitchell, linburn,Holmhirst, camping see map for detail

Get hold of the Sheffield Telegraph when you get here at the weekend it has a Property section in it comes out once a week on Friday.

RPG - it's people like you who really make my teeth itch!! "Avoid places like the Manor." Scuse me mate but there's LOADS more places worse than here (I live on the Manor.)

How do you know that the Manor's not a nice place to live?? You read it in the papers by any chance?? Do you believe everything you see/hear in the media?? I've lived here for 13 years and I can honestly say that I've never encountered any serious problem.

It's not the area that's the problem... it's the people who are around in certain parts of the Manor. May I add that this is a MINORITY not a MAJORITY. Sorry to rant but I'm fed up of people saying the Manor's not a good place to live and giving all of us a bad name!!

You wouldn't find that house on the site I gave you. It was up with another newsagents. As luck would have it (or not) it has a sold sign on it now.

There was another down the road up - but that is gone too. There is another house for sale further up the street - but it is a new house with not enough room to swing a cat in.

I'll mail you a pick of the area.

yes, some parts are ok, but you know yourself how bad some parts CAN be, and no ive not read it in the papers, its from experience

When moving to an area very far away, it is important to know what areas do have bad parts even if most of the people are nice because probably the houses that do come up for sale there are near the not so nice areas/roads. So I hope people can continue to give me advice without any one becoming offended.

Lynseyscott - I'm not offended, just annoyed that people always think the same. ALL areas have got 'bad uns' so to speak, including Dore, Ecclesall, Totley, Lodge Moor etc. But when people continually use the Manor as an example, it's a bit down heartening when you live here.

Killamarsh is OK. Local library, good leisure centre, 2 primary schools, local state nursery, playgroup and on the edge of open counrtyside. There is a good swimming pool in the next Derbyshire village of Eckington. No parks as such round here but Killamarsh borders on Rother Valley Country Park...two large lakes with dry ski slope and lots of watersports. Also a big enclosed outdoor play area for kids with lots of equipment.

I lived in London for 3 years and am sure that your quality of life would improve no end if you moved up here. :D

I have lived in many area's of Sheffield (Nottingham and London) and live in Mosborough at the moment. We like it alot-good bus services, fairly nice schools and beautiful countryside. You need a car really though for a supermarket. My husband is from Eccersall but prefers this side of town even though Eccersall is considered posh. Although many council estates have a history of being 'rough' this is often as a result of high unemployment however, the plus is the houses are usually big and affordable (many ex-mining villages/towns have council house estates/ex pit houses that were pre-fabricated and painted white (white-city). Many of theses estates are now recovering from mine closures and benefitting from a rise in value too). I love terraced houses but these tend to hold there price in central Sheffield and tend to be student rents. Like previously recommended Woodseats&Mearsbrook, Hillsborough are nice - great parks, services and shops.

I have a toddler and my favourite places to take him are:

Graves Park - duck pond, playground, farm, cafe and lots of grass (Handy from Woodseats)

Easy Tigers (Unstone - nr Chesterfield) Pirate Ship (Hillsborough) you pay to get in these

Little Tikes - Meadowhall shopping centre play area. Parents must watch there own kids but it is free!
