Has anyone got any idea what causes these or what is the best way to treat them?

I always get them if I slip while brushing my teeth. They're very painful at times. Salt is supposed to be the best way to treat them, but i've never tried it.

Not Brushing well enough is the main cause. or as Sid says cutting your mouth inside.

Last time I had one I used a combination of Tyrozets (sp) and Bonjela

Worked a treat

I'm a sufferer of the little blighters and have tried most of the remedies from the pharmacies, but the best one is called 'Adcortyl in orbase'.It is pretty disgusting stuff but stick with it,it usually works in a couple of days

Stress can cause them to flare up ( I am under stress at the moment worrying about the Chester v Morecambe game but up to now am OK).

The best thing is to mix a hot saline solution (hot as you can stand it with plenty of salt) and swill the offending area. It can work, but as with most things, time's your healer.

No matter how hard you try youll never bite it off. Have you ever noticed this? It keeps you entertained trying though

Thanks for that Sidla. It seems nobody actually know for sure what causes them but I think mine was caused while brushing my teeth like you said.

I've tried bonjela in the past and it didn't seem to have any effect.

I either swill some salt water around for a bit or put salt straight on it - works for me :)

I heard once it was down to poor nutrition? Does anyone having any back up for this?

My mate once had a mouth full on them and insisted on eating nothing but salt and vineger crisps - got rid of them tho!! *ouch*

I'd get to a dentist, cos apparently while ulcers are hurting your mouth, they're probably eating away at your jawbone.:(

oo what a horrible thought!:( I wouldn't bother going to the dentists though as he/she will only send you to your gp. I had some as a result of stress once and that was all my dentist did.

Everytime I've had them my dentist has given me antibiotics, and asked me to come back after the tablets are gone for a further check.

The bit about the jawbone being eaten I got from archaeology progs where human bones have been found and the bone expert has been able to say whether the dead guy had ulcers or not from what's left of his jawbones.

My daughter suffers terribly from ulcers and uses a mouth spray called Difflam. It numbs the area and helps them to heal. It really does work. Her dentist also recomended a luke warm salt mouth wash 3 times a day and to stay off things like boiled sweets that cause a build up of saliva in the mouth.

I've always found that using mouthwash a couple of times a day stops them. I get loads of 'em if I don't use it.

How's that work being that most ulcers are on the inside of your cheek i.e. nowhere near your jawbone.

Salt is a good way of healing them quick.
Gargle salt water, scream then wait until it heals.
I usually get them after a cold and always use salt water.
Its a very painfull way of curing them but effective.

Most, but not all.

Since i have been using an electronic toothbrush... about 3 years, i have had one.

So it must be summet todo with not scrubbing hard enough.

When you slip and knock your side of the mouth with ya brush, you are putting the previously brushed bacteria in ya skin!

Yeah but surely if they can eat through your jawbone they can eat through a bit of flesh and out the side of your cheek, I'm not convinced.

Haha, that makes a bit more sense although ulcers can proceed to absesses afaik - especially if you are unfortunate enough to have mouth cancer :(
