I wonder if any of you good people know the answer to my problem. I sub contract for a a company and I use a programme called quickbooks. I own the laptop and it stays with me, which means all of the data on Quickbooks stays with me too when I leave, such as confidential customer lists etc.

I want to be able to run quickbooks on the laptop all the time but only have access to the company information when the external hard drive is plugged in which is kept on the company premises all the time.

How can I do this?

Thankyou in advance......

Yes (ish). The data file for quickbooks is *probably* stored in the program installation directory.

You might try backing up quickbooks, uninstalling, re-installing specifying a drive on the removable HDD as the installation path and that may just do it. Quickbooks will run slightly slower as a result though but its not an exactly heavy program.

There may also be an option in QuickBooks to specify where the datafile is located and you may just be able to relocate that. I don't use it so couldn't really say.

Thanks for your reply, I tried that but when I reinstalled quickbooks the data was back in quickbooks as if I had never uninstalled it.

I guess it is designed so that you don't lose important data.

Where are the files likely to be? So if I uninstall it from my laptop and then reinstall quickbooks onto the hard drive and then move the data files from C: drive onto the external hard drive(they obviously don't get removed in the un-installation) all of the dat would be on the external hard drive????

Would this work?

Thankyou in advance....

The files are *.qbw from what I can see, you can give the above a try. Maybe you should move the data files to the external HDD first and then when you start QB it'll prompt you to create a new company or locate the other existing files?
