Hi,just wondered if any body remembered this band?
They were a rock type band and where quite prolific in the early 1980,s,in and around sheffield.
I,m asking on behalf of a friend who was a member of the band,he would be very interested to hear if any one remembers them,or has any memories of them.

I seem to remember seeing them win the final of the Sheffield pop and rock competition at the Top Rank.
I think they may have been the only band that played guitars (I'm sure they were the only band with a drummer) all the others were into backing tapes and all that Gary Numan electro guff.
They thoroughly deserved to win as they were actually musicians.
The beer was awful in that place though, barely drinkable.

Do I detect a little sarcasm? Never mind, I don't like being told off myself even though it is done tactfully. :P ;)

In future, perhaps you might consider reporting the post if it requires moving. It ensures a faster response.

Too right!
Deano's not had much response on this has he?
Does anyone remember the Lonely Hearts? A Shefield band around about the same time as the Quireboys (Queerboys). They had an albumsworth of good songs but never got a recording contract and therefore not the producer that they deserved.
They could play instruments as well Damon!

Hello everyone, bit late coming to this topic

I played Guitar for Maison Rouge & The Rouge from start to finish & remember the Top Rank gigs well

The beer was indeed crap & there were quite a few keyboard-oriented bands around. Some v good bands played there

Steve Ward was a mate & colleague of mine who came to see the band a lot. He once said:

"You're a brilliant band but you'll never get anywhere"

Quite right he was too :-)

The singer & I went on to the Mag7 around 93/94. They're still going & well worth seeing

The Blues Doctors mentioned in an earlier post finished about '92

The singer from that band & I are now in a band called "The Unforgiven"

Here we go again, we were too old for this the 1st time round ...

I'm new here so can't post links or personal replies via this forum 'til I've posted 5 messages, so if you want further info, ask here or use the links on the Mag7's site

Hiya Phil.
Welcome to the forum, don't get too involved with it.
Steve Harper here, used to knock around with Frank and Welly(Dave) Wilkes, Tom etc...
Nice to see you're still around.
Post on here when you are playing locally, and I will endeavour to attend.....

Hello Steve, keeper of the "red witch" as I recall

As requested, next for The Unforgiven in Sheffield:

Wed 17th Aug The Birley
Fri 26th Aug Laycock's Sports & Social club, Archer Rd (not a w.m.c.), no membership needed, no bingo :-)

We still do some of the old Blues Doctors stuff, r'n'b, zep, feelgoods, etc

Long time since I drank a Red Witch, very rare I drink these days, only on special occasions and bike rallies. The Red Witches developed into "Harper Holocausts", essentially the same drink, with the addition of vodka and a Britvic orange. Have put your gig dates on the calender; just have to remember to look at the calender now and we're cooking on gas.......
See you soon.

I had to register and post here when I picked up on The Blues Doctors from a Google search. I used to live in a Lincolnshire village called Woodhall Spa, and a band with that name used to play in my local pub once in a while. They were superb, covering Hendrix, the Stones and many more. ... This was in the early to mid 90s.

I don't know if they were the same Blues Doctors as you mention above, but basically they got me into rock music ... I heard that they split up. I remember their guitarist was a shortish guy, and their lead singer used to neck bottles of lager between songs. Also some red hot drum solos at the end of each gig. I miss those days, but things have moved on and now I live in Birmingham.

If anyone knows about the band I'm on about I'd like to catch up with them in whatever incarnation they are in. Thanks for the music.

Hello John

Yes, that's the same Blues Doctors. I'm the original guitarist & left the band in '91. The guitarist you refer to was a great player & marvellous at the Hendrix stuff. A smashing bloke called Joe. Sorry to say he died a year or 2 later & the band did indeed fold

The drummer was playing for Juicy Lucy last I heard

The singer is still necking bottles & we have a new band together doing some of the old Doctors numbers

www.theunforgiven.co.uk

I'll fwd your message to the bottle necking singer but I think he'll be out somewhere necking bottles ....

Cheers

Hello - Many thanks for responding. Gutted to hear about Joe: he was a masterly guitarist in the truest sense. I remember one gig, he was playing (I think) Voodoo Chile. The guy standing next to me said, 'He might as well be Hendrix' and I agreed ... He was note perfect and it's very sad to think that I'll never hear that again. I felt that I was in the presence of an artist at the top of his game.

He he ... Thanks for passing this on to the lager necking singer. I meant it when I said the Drs got me interested in rock. Until then it was just a sound on the juke box, but music can really wake you up to new things and that helped me along a bit.

Oh yeah! I'll visit your website from time to time. Thank you.

I remember seeing Maison Roiuge when they won the Top Rank contest, quite 'Jethro Tull' if i remember right. Also saw them at the Beehive on West Street when the singer did a belly solo in one song! Nice to see a few of em are still playing.

gibsonphil

Yes, we were a bit Tull sounding. The singer played flute but we'd never do any Tull

The belly solo was Paul's famous "Gut Break"

He plays with the Mag7 now but doesn't do the gut break any more 'cos his arms aren't long enough ......

Pretty much the same observations as PJC above there. Maison Rouge was a name anyone who was in a band, thinking about being in a band etc etc knew at the time. I also remember many a great night in The Jolly Buffer listening to The Blues Doctors, other bands that seemed on the regular Buffer list were Backstreet Band, Shedds (On Fire) and Blind Alley.

I have seen Mag7 in the last few years they are a good band. Not sure what happened to many of the other bands I have listed although when I saw Do$ch recently they all seemed a bit familiar.. but it's been along time.

Yes, we played there a few times. Paul (singer) worked there

We were all ****** most of the time too

I remember a couple of Bernies from around that time, also "J floor Mafia", people drinking pints of vomit, etc. Some great times :-)

This is what became of the place

I played on the same bill as Maison Rouge out at Stockbridge Victory club in about 83 or 84, so I certainly remember them. Some sort of charity thing as I remember. I was the bassist in Fireflight at the time, with a bloke called Steve Henshaw (ex Fixer, looked like Groucho Marx) on guitar. Not seen Steve for about 8 years now, if anyone knows his whereabouts please PM me.
Cheers:thumbsup:
